So we decided to instead walk a mile to their restaurant to see if we could get a table - or even sit outside if we had to - knowing there would probably be a bit of a wait. When we got there I entered the restaurant with my son who is 3 in a stroller and immediately was greeted by a Redheaded woman who smiled at me like I had 3 heads. I then asked kindly for their availability and explained my situation and the woman scoffed at me - as if I was stupid to even ask the question - to which she then turned her iPad around and showed a list of Reservations. I actually managed to point to my reservation that via the website had not seemed to schedule correctly - to which she aggressively said "well there's nothing we can do'. Right as I turned to leave the restaurant the rest of my party trickles in and asks if we can eat outside - One of the kind waitresses said "sure" to which she set us up outside. We ordered 3 bottles of Sake and they were £24 for 300ml bottles. We had hoped that they might be worth the price but unfortunately they weren't much better than what you can get from a CoOp with a liquor license. The Shrimp Ramen was fantastic and the sushi tasted great but was really overpriced for the quantity which they give you. Overall I totally get the lack of vacancy for a popular spot - but being scoffed at as you gently inquire about availability was really off putting. Even eating there despite it was difficult - and the alcohol/sushi being overpriced. Would not recommend. The sushi quality and the waitresses efforts are the only reason it's not 1/5.

This was one of the first restaurants I dined at in Glasgow with my now husband after our fateful meeting in Japan, so it is very special to the both of us. I'd hopped on a plane to the other side of the world to visit a man I'd known for 14 days, fell in love and moved here. We've returned here loads of times since then, but I haven't been to Nanakusa for nearly a year. In my endless quest of eating out as many places in Glasgow as possible, sometimes the real gems get left behind for the new and exciting places. I was so glad to return last night for a UYE and see that nothing has changed since I first fell in love with Nanakusa (I was already in love with my husband by the time we ate here!) Now, Nanakusa. It does Japanese food, and it does it really well (see the aforementioned reference to meeting my husband in Japan!). I really love sashimi and there aren't enough places in Glasgow that I can eat it, so I always get a portion when I eat here. I also love takoyaki (octopus balls) and can't resist them here. I've tried them elsewhere but Nanakusa's are the best. The service is always friendly, smiling and helpful. It was a little slow last night but there were only two people working the whole restaurant, but none of us were in a particular hurry. I had a small glass of rosé with my meal and they also have a selection of saké and plum wines, as well as Japanese beers for that really authentic taste. The food arrived quickly and as soon as it was ready. Two people had ordered bento boxes and these arrived about 5 minutes after everything else. The waiter seemed really conscious of this and kept coming over which was a nice touch. I loved all my dishes, the takoyaki and salmon sashimi and I also had the chicken teriyaki. Sides like rice and noodles are optional which is great if you're all about the protein. Downsides? As I said, service was a bit slow. I'm also not a big fan of the lighting (the wall panels change colour) as it makes it hard to take nice food photos! Haha! Bench seating can be difficult to navigate getting in and out of gracefully. We ordered a bento box each, I had Chicken Teriyaki and my man had Chicken Curry. The bento boxes came in plastic sectioned trays and the sushi is all individually wrapped in sets of two. They keep all the sushi in an open fridge. The girl was constantly at the fridge as she made up many deliveries from there. So I guess for ease they keep all sushi maki type sushis wrapped up. If you want any other sushi's they will make up fresh for you. We both found our chicken dishes sauces very watery and I found the chicken texture a little strange, maybe a cheap cut. Who knows?! It still tasted alright and replenished my stomach well. I did find the sushi maki was smaller but cheaper, so not as much filling probably helping to lower the cost. It still was flavoursome and I would go back. The girl did forget our miso soup but made it up with more sushi maki when she realised. They also do sushi boxes from £3.75 and also party boxes which is made up of loads of sushi ranging from £19.99. I think it would be a great idea to have some boxes or a party box and have some sushi in Kelvingrove, which is literally round the corner. Having participated in such strenuous events like the "hurl a massive column wax candle", "schwing zee sausage", "pin the torch on the Olympian", "beat the goalie", and an obstacle course, they needed some good ole protein... FISH! However, lacking any energy and motivation, it was all about, "Why can't we order in like that place in Munich?" (Note: we really did order in sushi while we were in Munich, and it was effin delicious) *LIGHT BULB* The other day while we were driving through Finnieston, I noticed a wee shop next to the Korean restaurant Shilla, a "newish" sushi bar/takeaway called Cailin's Sushi. I took a mental note of this for future reference. While I may whinge about the Japanese food in Glasgow, Nanakusa has always been my go-to anytime I'm jonesin' for some sushi or a bento. Though my only gripe is that it can get quite pricey for the quality, though the quality actually surpasses that of YO! Sushi, Oko, Wudon, Ichiban, Wagamama, etc. On this occasion, my "German" teammate confirmed that Cailin's delivered and their offering was immense... nigiri, gunkan, hand rolls, hoso maki, futomaki, special rolls, sashimi, noodles, rice dishes, bento boxes, various sushi boxes, and desserts. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, and I ultimately ordered more that I could eat... seabass nigiri, mackerel nigiri, grilled eel hand roll, and a full spicy tuna roll. My teammate had the crispy duck hand roll and chicken katsu curry. Delivery was swift, but not as lightening fast as Usain Bolt; 30 minutes is standard! When the food arrived, presentation was much nicer than I had expected or experienced (i.e. Home Wok's sushi). The individually wrapped nigiri might be a little over the top, as they already come in a container. So I'm a bit confused as to how that adds to its "freshness"; if anything I think it's slightly wasteful packaging? The food itself was fresh and flavourful, and the miso soup was delightful. I'm happy to report that the fish didn't smell of ammonia or anything horrible (all good things). The only negative was the chicken katsu curry was already quite soggy, since the curry had been poured over the chicken prior to delivery. If the curry sauce were kept separately in transit, then my teammate would have been able to enjoy the crisp coating before the lashing of the silky curry sauce. While this probably wasn't the best sushi of my life, Cailin's does offer Glaswegians great value for food quality and price, especially when delivery is only £1.50. The £12.60 worth of sushi was enough to force me out of my Oktoberfest dirndl and Chuck Taylors combo, and into some stretchy yoga bottoms. Glasgow has a lot of catching up to do with regards to a good representation of more diverse ethnic cuisines like the other cosmopolitan cities around the world (*cough* NYC, Chicago, LA, Seattle, San Francisco...). With Cailin's offering fresh sushi delivery to either your home or office, this is a refreshing option in a land that birthed the deep-fried Mars bar. Yummers.

We often take our little boy with us and they are so lovely to him, I order him a couple of dishes as soon as we arrive and these are brought out not long after we have him settled in his highchair and our drinks have arrived. It's brilliant as food keeps him occupied and we can relax and enjoy our food too. I force myself to order some dishes I haven't tried before - it's so easy to stick with the ones I have tried and I LOVE - and each time I discover another mouth watering dish. One of my new favourites is the pork cheek, melt in the mouth, jam packed full of flavour and so moreish. Added to some regular favourites such as the spicy prawns, paella, patatas bravas and their delicious salad dishes and you get a wonderfully varied meal. My top tip is to order a basket of bread for the table, the sauces and oils that accompany the dishes are divine and I love mopping them up with a chunk of soft fluffy bread. It's great going to Cubatas in a big group, with people who are happy sharing. My ideal would be to go and order one of everything off the menu, heaven :) These guys also do gift vouchers, I know as I bought my mum and dad some for Christmas. They were ok, some a bit weird tasting and texture wise a bit strange to me. Overall it was a good experience as they left us alone all night after we were served our food. Linda and I wanted somewhere we could have a good catch up and this was ideal.
