Dr. Wu (the father, not the son, who shares the practice) is a kind and attentive ophthalmologist. Unfortunately, the average wait time is at least 1-1.5 hours (WITH an appointment) and the office staff is often rude (except for his wife). Yes, I know a lot about them since he's been my ophthalmologist for nearly a decade. He's a good doctor, but it might be time for me to move on. The only reason this type of office etiquette (or lack thereof) is acceptable is because the practice is located in Flushing, where patients don't know better and often don't expect better. Bottom line: if you want a good ophthalmologist and don't mind sitting in a crowded office for 1.5 hours then this is a 5 start establishment for you. If you understand that the purpose of making an appointment is so that you shouldn't have to wait over 1.5 hours in a waiting room, then avoid this place. read more

1. I was billed for a battery of eye health tests when only asked for vision exam. Reception explained, "everyone usually only wants vision exams but the doctor can decide if he thinks you need more exams". I assume that's why the doctor kept asking if anything was wrong during my visit and that my disclosing of my family medical history (NOT that I had none of that) prompted him to deem that I "needed" a diabetes eye exam. 2. The front desk would not directly answer any questions regarding what exactly I was billed for. I called multiple times (feeling like burden at first) but they were allusive and defensive. They said things like "we DID say we were going to bill you for anything that comes up afterwards and you DID nod your head and say yes". I asked them to bill the extra copayment to my secondary insurance and they kept cutting me off, giving me answers to questions I wasn't even asking. When I finally got my request across, the lady snarkily replied, "You'd probably end up paying more anyways." (??) 3. This is only my second visit with them and the first time was not any better. Years ago, I ordered my first contacts through them. When trying someone new, I realized Wu's office charged almost twice as much for the same brand/number of contact lens. I only revisited this office recently because I was pressed for time needing more contacts. Which.... 4. Again, they gave me such a hard time for simply trying to get the contact prescription for the equivalent to my glasses degree. Foolishly, I told them I wanted to order contacts from elsewhere so the front desk pulled all sorts of strings to avoid giving me the prescription. They tried telling me to call a number (which turned out to be the number of the online contacts distributor. They can't prescribe but I called anyway and even the representative said the office is giving me the roundabout), giving me their faxing number (??), and encouraging me to come in person. At this point, I dreaded having to call them again for anything, fearing they'd complicate things even more. They eventually relented with the simplest reply of: "oh, actually, I can email it to you." The prescription with the doctor's signature and everything pops into my inbox promptly. 5. During my visit, I heard a front desk lady who kept obnoxiously fixing a patient's use of optometrist vs ophthalmologist while he was simply trying to tell her he would like to decline going forward due to insurance issues. I understand that they cannot possibly help every individual with every little thing as they already are so busy (especially now during the pandemic) but the receptionists need to stop talking over people and patronizing them like no one is worth their time. I'm not demanding to be entitled to some insanely superb customer service...just decent patient transparency and communication. Also for the extra fee we pay for visiting an ophthalmologist, I think Dr. Wu was a bit standoffish and had few interactions with despite having spent over an hour in their office (after the waiting time). Something more than "looks healthy" when quickly looking through some random charts and "is there ANYTHING troubling you today?". The only reason why I tried this office in the first place was that I had pleasant memories with Dr. Wu (senior) and his team throughout my childhood. Can't say I'd recommend Dr. Wu (junior). read more

I called and asked for the prescriptions for my contacts to be ordered online. Apparently, the people at front desk are still being very snappy to customers. I had to call back to look up particular contacts brand name for my prescriptions, since they weren't so knowledgeable about the brand name. So I called back 30 mins after initial call and told them that I need prescriptions with specific. I told them it's okay to email me, so I didn't adventure out to their office. At the end, they emailed a hour later. I saw that correct prescriptions with wrong brand name. This had caused me to be upset. And they're not open Friday's. I had to wait to Saturday to get this problem fixed. They weren't listening and didn't care at all. read more

I'm horrified by this practice. My mother went to see Dr. Alex Wu recently, and called me to discuss his recommendations since I'm a physician and she wanted to get my opinion. When she told me about her visit, the tests performed, and his recommendations, I was aghast. He told her she was at high risk for acute angle closure glaucoma (read: older, female, Asian, like literally half the people in the waiting room; she has no other specific risks) and wanted to book her for a prophylactic iridotomy. This was despite the fact that he openly acknowledged that she does not have a diagnosis of glaucoma (in fact, never even measured her intraocular pressure during the visit!!) He scared her by telling her that she COULD get it (again, simply because she's an older, female Asian), and that she would be at acute risk for losing her vision. As my mom checked out, they hammered her to schedule her iridotomy. I was horrified when I heard this, but couldn't be sure that this was as unethical as it sounded because I'm not an ophthalmologist, and who knows, may prophylactic iridotomies are the new thing (it's not--according to Lancet article published in 4/2019 [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30878226/]). So I decided to Google this guy, and lo and behold everything I'm reading confirms that this guy is unethical and as another review mentioned, sees his patients as cash cows. The first two reviews that popped up on Google review are literally the exact scenario that my mom described. He recommended prophylactic iridotomy. One patient luckily sought a second opinion and was told that it was unnecessary and the other unfortunately proceeded with it and subsequently developed worsening vision. I'm so glad for publicly available reviews, and I'm horrified as a physician that people like Alex Wu exist. I can't speak for the rudeness which seems to be the theme of all of the other reviews here. But I can say that this guy was completely unethical in his recommendations, recommending cash-generating procedures that are not indicated. Honestly, this guy should be reported to the medical board. It makes me so angry when physicians take advantage of immigrants who are not medically literate and who don't have anywhere else to go, and trust these physicians just because that's the culture. Ok. End rant. Please, please, please go elsewhere. read more

One of the worst Ophthalmologists ever. The receptionist are so rude and even worst the doctor. The younger doctor is so rude. He does not work well with people. I don't understand why he is a doctor. He is extremely snappy and thinks everything he says is right. He threw a piece of paper at my dad face when my dad asked him a question. The younger doctor is arrogant and rude. If you have to go, make sure ask for to see his father. The wait here is ridiculous. What is the point of making an appointment if they don't call you for 1.5 hours later. Find another doctor to go to. read more

My mom's cataract surgery went well with out any issue, I never have any issue with my on site eye light leak issue, staff are very professional, follows pandemic protocol. Being bi-lingo I have no problem communicating with both doctors, problem with locations - huge amount of walk in emergency 1st timers of various nationalities and language issues. read more

My cardiologist told me about Cher Dai Wu and his son Alexander Wu so I made an appointment for my parents. His office is very hectic and your appointment will definitely be delayed by at least 2 hours. The older Dr. Wu (the father) should probably be retired as he speaks softly and slowly. He barely answers any questions and does not speak very clearly. I felt more confused after our appointment than before it. As for the Alexander Wu (the son), he is one of the most impatient doctors I have ever met. He does not speak during the appointment and answers with one word statements. For example: "Why can't my son see clearly?" His reply: "Try to rest more. Okay see you in six months." Then he walks out of the room and calls out the next patients name. He looks angry and very annoyed whenever anyone speaks to him! Even with so many negative reviews on Yelp (average 1.5 stars) I can't believe he still has patients. Most of them are older immigrants that don't know any better so it really shows how knowledgeable the older Flushing community is. I would try to look for a better doctor elsewhere! read more

I just returned from an eye exam and learned that my vision has NOT in fact been stabilized the last few years. My prescription went up at least -100, which means that for the last 5 years I was provided with the same but WRONG prescription. How disappointing. read more

They pretend they don't see people and have no respect for patients or their time . I didn't even wait for Dr.Wu and ended up leaving because I was so upset with how they treated me . Long wait even with appointment. Dr. Wu is rude and very impatience with my mom. For a young Dr. Like him should have more patience toward his patients. Seems like he just want to get it over with and move on to his next patients. His front staffs is also pretty rude on explaining to patients and lack of knowledge. Dr. Wu has been my eye doctor for over 2 decades now and he and his son are warm, wonderful practitioners. I am surprised that there are negative reviews about them. I've had 3 laser surgeries done on my eyes and there has been absolutely no issues at all. They are a family practice----for families, and cater to your needs and best interest. There are letters of appreciation tacked up all over the office walls and patients who fully attest to their competency and expertise. read more

Dr. Alexander Wu (the son, not the father) is an incredibly rude person who has no business being a physician. He is my mother's ophthalmologist, unfortunately. I've gone with her to her appointments a few times, and am appalled at the way he treats his patients. He is curt, and obviously does not like answering questions. He recently performed cataract surgery on my mother. When he walked in the room to speak with her before the procedure, he didn't even bother saying hi. He just walked in the room and said "ok, which eye are we doing?" and proceeded to mark my mom's forehead above the eye with a pen, without even telling her what he was going to do. Are you kidding me???? Seriously? This guy has no bedside manners whatsoever. He doesn't give a crap about his patients; he only sees them as cash cows. And by the way, I'm a physician. I would never treat anyone the way Dr. Wu treats his patients. Dr. Wu, if you're reading this, please go back to medical school and learn how to talk to patients. I was recommended to this doctor by Main Street Optical in Flushing to do a more indepth check up. The doctor basically did no test on my eyes, and when I ask why my eye cannot get the correct vision which is what I came to find out, he basicallly said he did not know except to rest my eyes from the computer. My mom tells me that already! So no test was done, no answers to my questions. Do not waste your time with this doctor. After a while, he said the glasses i had previously had the wrong axis (?). To top off how bad this doctor is, I ask him for my new prescription to bring back to the glasses shop to get my glasses. Made the glasses, and guess what, its completely off!!! I feel like im cross eyed and images are floating and curvy. Bottom line, do not waste your money, and time or you will be sorry. Especially when you are doing something more permanent like lasik or any other surgery with the Wu Eye Care practice. - Appointments are overbooked.
