Every thing that is marked regular price is 20% off and they have a monthly competition where they gift a buyer $50 if you bought at least $20 worth of stuff. At the time of this review, it was my second visit in 20 days and I still came out with a huge haul (see pic). They are super active on their Facebook page always taking pictures of their latest arrivals. They also hold things for you at your request so that's how I came out with my next series of cats! If you love books, the best discoveries in town are at the Friends' Bookstore in the basement of…read morethe Ann Arbor District Library, downtown. They sell books, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. Most of the books cost a dollar or two. When the shop opens in September the book buyers from the bigger used books shops line up at the door and buy boxes full of stuff. The shop goes through mountains of books every month, and a lot of it sells for less than what you would end up paying anywhere else. The best part is that the money you spend goes to the library. Only open on weekends, and hours are not the same as the library's hours: Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The bookshop closes during the summer months, so do your shopping between September and May. Full disclosure: I'm a paid employee of the library. And an avid supporter of the bookstore.

Used bookstores on the other hand, were where you'd go digging for treasure among aged tomes and other peoples' cast offs. Perhaps that's what's keeping West Side Book Shop around. When the instant gratification of new novelty is clicks away at your fingertips, the promise of unpredictability, mystique and snippets of nostalgia draws customers to enter its doors. The space isn't large, really more of a living room transformed by wall to wall shelves and mini mountains on the central surfaces and displays. Here you too can own a piece of history or simply extend the life of a book or periodical. Sometimes you can find a rare edition or obscure title. Past times I've been there I haven't had much interaction with the staff though they were pleasant when checking out. The shop is located in downtown Ann Arbor so parking can be a pain, though if you're not too picky and prefer not to pay, you can always park a little further in the more residential areas and walk over. There are plenty of structures and lots too. They'll be celebrating 50 years in 2025. Hope they continue to be celebrated in Ann Arbor for years to come!

The video was fun and made this establishment look like a warm & welcoming space. I appreciated learning more of the owners' origin story as Natalie interviewed them. All of that to say, I was more than motivated to check the place out. When I walked in, I was not disappointed. Located in Kerrytown, Spun has a local charm to it. The store itself is a great size where it's large enough for patrons to explore without feeling too crowded yet still able to maintain a cozy hipster vibe making it a great reflection of Ann Arbor. The sheep artwork (designed and drawn by one of the owners) is creative branding and contributes to the memorable experience. The yarn selection is massive and easy to navigate because of how well organized it is based on yarn weight. The amount of yarn may be overwhelming to some because there is a lot to look at - not a bad thing, only something to take into consideration. I thought it was quite extensive which left me speechless! Some may find it helpful to have a shopping list going in or know ahead of time what your timeframe is because you will want to spend time exploring each aisle. I had researched ahead of time on their website though found that when I looked at the yarn in person, some of the color hues I was expecting were different in-store compared to the photo listing online. I didn't mind as I had time to look and adapt, perusing in person so I was able to choose something else. I appreciated that there were quite a few local dyers, artisans, and spinners spotlighted - from the yarn to the notions/yarn bowls offered. Staff was welcoming - Annri introduced herself, provided a basket, and made herself available if I had questions. It was very friendly of her! The selection of yarn ranged in price where many would be able to find something in their budget. I felt some items were on the pricier side but that's considering the college town factor as well as that I only recently began transitioning to independent dyers, natural fibers & hand-spun. I did appreciate that there were several economy priced yarns offered which seemed like more options compared to other LYS' I've visited but still considerably less in proportion to Spun's independent dyer options. I walked away with stitch markers, two sets of double pointed needles, and four skeins of yarn! What a great haul! The staff was also kind enough to wind it for me free of charge which I greatly appreciated. I only had to wait in line and return for my skeins after 30 minutes. I could have easily spent all day at Spun!! It sets the standard for LYS and I'm excited for my next visit!!

I loved the layout of the yarn - everything was so easy to browse. There were several different areas to sit and knit or browse through magazines. I did find a few yarns to try and a new felt project. I will definitely be coming back here again.
