They moved locations since the last time I was here but it's still a pretty rad concept--a nonprofit resale of craft and art supplies and other goods that can be repurposed and upcycled into art supplies. There's a lot here if you're willing to dig through! There's a vintage area with tons of old, vintage papers, photographs, sheet music, postcards, photo albums, negatives, etc. Loads of scrap fabric and remnants, yarn, embroidery floss, notions, scrap paper, scrapbooking materials, stickers, stencils, even industrial supplies like foam scraps, and household materials like pill bottles (empty of course), lids, jars, storage containers, craft kits, old calendars, big bins of wine corks, pens, etc. They have a HUGE selection of old National Geographic issues, some going back as far as the 1930s. Perfect for collages or collecting. They also have a few machines like scales, microscopes, sewing machines, etc. As well as a few tools, wood and metal working items, just bits and bobs of tons of things to sort through. It changes all the time so stop in regularly to see what they get in! And the best part? It's all SO cheap and keeps all these things out of landfills (56K lbs just last year)! Upcycling FTW! Some things are in better condition than others but if you're the creative type you will be inspired by all you can find here. And since things are so affordable you can really take risks and noodle around without worrying about wasting your supplies. Want more inspo? I enjoy shopping here as I'm an art teacher at a non-profit art center and often find useful supplies. However sometimes I find myself laughing in the middle of the store at the prices. I really wish this store and thrift stores in general would remember all their merchandise was DONATED! And price accordingly. The bulk area, which literally consists of what would have been industrial garbage is way overpriced too. read more

I don't know, I wasn't too impressed. I like the purpose of the store, but it's mostly a lot of junk. They have some stuff that is good. Their yarns are organized, paint brushes, and a few other things. For the most part I feel like there is a section for specific things but then you have to dig through baskets in that section to see if you can even find what you want. I didn't feel like there was much for crafters who do specific projects. It's more of a place for abstract crafting or even for educators to buy stuff for projects. It's great to support local and sustainable companies. It's just not my kind of craft store. read more

I called initially to inquire about classes, without a returned call. When I entered the store for the first (and now last time) I was met with what I thought to be the most unwelcoming of personnel. I paid for registration with her for the class entry for two children and myself. Then I was met with an even more brash woman upon having a seat with kids at the session who wrongly accused me of non-payment. The middle aged lady had fired an intense line of questioning at me in front of the entire group with 1. Did you register for this class and when did you pay? 2. What's your name? 3. Who? Who did you pay? I answered her that I just made the payment, which she abruptly retorted "How could you? I'm the only one here!". 2. Nobody had taken either my name nor the children participating after payment. 3. The employee did not provide me with her name or provide a receipt. She was extremely aggressive with a seething countenance. She said she would get back to me while she figured it out. I'm not sure what the real issue is but the employees need to figure this out if they wish for the business to survive. If I may offer a few words of advice: SCRAP the hatefulness. read more

Love this store. This is a great place for almost anything! They have sewing supplies, painting, scrapbooking, jewelry making, etc. The prices are very reasonable most things being between 25 cents and $2 and larger items going for $5-$10. There is a $5 limit to use a card to pay but it's not hard to find lots of fun stuff. The employees are also kind and helpful. read more

The only thing bad I can say about Scrap is that my mobile phone does not get very good service inside its doors. That makes it a little more challenging for me to use the Yelp app and take pictures of all the magnificent finds that abound from almost every inch of the place. Seriously. If you need art supplies, crafting supplies, office supplies, home project supplies, happiness supplies, random supplies, this shop is for you. Just give yourself plenty of time. You may not find everything you are looking for, but that isn't what Scrap is about. What you will find are things you did not even know you needed. Perhaps my favorite part is checking out personal items from other people's everyday lives. There are post cards with notes written from vacations taken long ago. You can look at slides that were once shown at family gatherings. Stacks of photographs are available from the era when snapshots were taken on film and you had to pay and wait for them to be developed. It's amazing. This most recent trip, I found a treasure trove of old recipes clipped from old magazines. Part of me wanted to take the one home about beef cookery, just so that I had documentation on the prices of meat from the early 1980s. On top of all this, Scrap helps to upcycle things that might otherwise have been waste. And the money you spend there helps to support their efforts. A trip to scrap is so full of winning from every angle. For me, the hard thing is trying to come up with a large enough basked to get up to the minimum required for credit card purchases. What a wonderful and redefining place to explore. I was amazed at the store's organization and the miscellaneous knick knacks that were really neat and unusual. Scrap's fabric sale drew me and my friend from Livonia into town. My friend was a bit disappointed because the store was a lot smaller than what he had expected, but he managed to find some fabric for his cosplay needs. I on the other hand, recently discovered what a terrible human being I was because I was recycling... incorrectly- adding to the problem. It's establishments and communities like this that give you hope to believe in a better you and a better world. I got some random things I could use like zip ties, frame holders, bells. There is a $5 credit card limit so please plan accordingly. They also accept donations and I will be calling them to set something up in the near future! Thank you Scrap for all you do. I have never been inside the store, but have donated. My daughter has been a beader, knitter, and scrapbooker and has all the stuff for those hobbies so we donated it. They like donations to be clean and sorted and like to know if you are bringing more than 4 banker boxes of stuff. Once we were at the Scrap Box it was very easy to donate. A great idea for a place to get cheap craft supplies. read more

The Scrap Box is basically a place where you can buy things you would normally find for free, for cheap. That's not to say it's not helpful or worth visiting, though! The thing is, it has has a pretty wide range of stuff that might otherwise take you months of packratting or days of scavenging at various sites to get. So maybe it's just better to go here and pay a quarter for that huge paper tube or bag of buttons. Get all your odds and ends in one fell swoop. These are the things I like most about the place: - well organized: for a miscellaneous store, it does an excellent job keeping itself clean, organized, and not overwhelming (in fact, it may do a little too good of a job as I found it to be sparse at times). - the free room: granted you get what you pay for, but last time I was in I got a huge bag of nothing but baby food jars which are perfect for spices and baking miniature pies. As I don't have a rug rat of my own, this was a perfect way to get a hold of teenie tiny jars (I admit my addiction to all things miniaturized - am I alone in this?). - crazy things you can't even identify: oh yes, there are very strange little pieces of plastic and other material that definitely have some sort of purpose but hell if I can tell you what - I can imagine it would be fun to string these together and make some avant garde fashion garment. Or use them as stage props. Or create some mystery sci-fi themed birthday part for the kids (or young-at-hearts). I saw a sign saying they are no longer taking donations of fabric which although I can understand, bums me out. They do still have a few piles of neatly folded fabric but the designer in me wanted a gigantic pool full to swim in. Also, just a head's up that they have different summer hours (they cut their day short by an hour and close up at 5pm). Might be best to call ahead if you're going in the evening, especially since it's a bit of a trek out of town. All in all, not too shabby and I found what I was looking for. I found it to be more kindergarten craft supply than treasure trove, though. read more

This store was recommended to myself and a coworker while we were attending a teaching conference in Ann Arbor and since we were unable to visit while we were there, we drove back on another weekend. This is a great store and I can see why local teachers like to shop there. Their front room is full of all kinds of great items - various sizes of paper, craft items galore, small prizes for during the school year, stickers, and all sorts of odds and ends. The back room is chock full of items that are sold by the bag - $6 for a small paper bag and $9 for a large paper bag. It's up to you to get creative about how you stuff your bag. My coworker and I left with 2 large paper bags full of everything from sticky vinyl decals to small squishy round sponges to nature photographs and everything in between. We're so excited to use our items in our classrooms this school year! I will say that although this store is amazing and definitely worth the stop when you're in Ann Arbor, we both said we probably wouldn't make the 2 hour drive again just to shop there. However, if you live in the area I highly recommend this store! read more

What a cool idea for an arts and craft supply store! It's not just a place to pick up supplies for your kids to do crafts but also a clever way of recycling and reusing leftover materials. Community members donate scraps of fabric and wood and plastic and so on, and it's grouped into bins and shelves by the people who run The Scrap Box. Then, others can come in and buy supplies like bits of colored foam, shiny beads, or old greeting card fronts, and use them in arts and crafts projects. They also have a bulk room where you can pay a flat fee for as much stuff as you can fit in a bag. If I was running a daycare or teaching a Vacation Bible School class or throwing any kind of party or event for kids, I would make this place my first stop. The day I was there, the kids looked just as fascinated with all the strange odds and ends as their Moms did. The staff have also nicely made available a small selection of stuff that kids can play with inside the store while their parents shop. All the stuff that's fair game for this is on a shelving unit near the door. It's not just for kids but also for adults and kids at heart. For instance, I found a stack of really cool posters for a Detroit Art Museum exhibit being sold for a dollar each. read more

Most of this shop is random odds and ends, sold by the bag, for doing funky arts-and-crafts stuff... but I mean really random. Ever gotten electronics or camera gear packed in die-cut foam? This place has huge bins of the trimmings --- the foam from inside the cut-out, or between two pieces. No corn cobs, no dried corn ears, and minimal cloth --- just lots of foam-like things. read more

Leave it up to Ann Arbor-ites to come up with this kind of a place! Not only is it the perfect place for crafty types, this place is like a shrine to the recycle/upcycle craze. They have a whole bunch of donated/gifted "stuff" (at very reasonable prices) that you and/or your kids can make cool crafts from: stickers, to papers, to plastic bottle caps and some new stuff, too(an hour glass clock or a tape measure kitchen timer, perhaps?)! Shopping here is like going on a treasure hunt- you never know what you might come across. They also do kids birthday parties AND accept donations! I was just there and dropped off a trunk load of old designer fabric sample books- I'm so glad they wont be taking up space in some mountain of trash and will (possibly) help someone to create their masterpiece (mostly I am glad they are not freeloading rides from me anymore ;-) ). I highly recommend this place as a fun, different Saturday afternoon activity- or any time you're in the mood to treasure hunt. read more

Keep your mind on where you are, and your purpose there and this is a GREAT place! Took my 7-year-old son here on a long weekend and we spent $10 on a box and bag chock full of odds and ends. We then went home and he and a friend spent 2 HOURS (that's a lifetime in 7 year old time!) playing, crafting and laughing over the bits we got. It's a bit of organized chaos, so go in expecting that and you'll be ok. Also note- take your own bags or boxes to drag your stuff home. Best find: stuff a (lunch bag sized) paper bag for $2. Not a full service place like Michaels but I like to avoid big box craft stores when possible. They had what I needed: a piece of cream colored board for matting a picture for two dollars. And other cool things, like super cheap paper rolls. Prices are super low. read more

Customer service was very friendly and helpful. They have such a wide variety of scraps. I wish they had more practical art supplies also. But, I did manage to find a couple different options to make my toddler a pretty decent sensory table on the cheap. Customer service is pretty decent. It is also nice that they have an art station in the front were your child can work on an art project for free. read more

Finally I have what I need at my finger tips to create and use all the products I have been accumulating for my projects. I no longer have to sort through the boxes on the closet shelf or track down that one little roll of ribbon hiding at the bottom of the bin. Everything is within my view and reach. I am thrilled I can space the shelves and containers to fit my needs and my product and adjust them as needed. I like being able to access in seconds what I need to quickly create a note card with embellishments when time is important. The setup, cleanup and ease of use that this piece of organizational genius provides is amazing. The instructions for assembly were easy to follow and it was finished in 5 hours. My craft room is organized and no longer resembles a post tornado site. Thank you to the staff for the gracious treatment I received during and after my purchase. read more

Visited your store the other day for the first time. Totally awesome. I only wish I had the imagination to go with all the stuff you have to offer. I love the fill the bag idea. I was in that room for over an hour. I just kept walking around saying `oh wow` alot. The workers in the `bag room` were great. They knew where everything was and there is sooo many different items. I am very eager to get back after the holiday closing. I am bringing my sister-in-law. She could not believe everything I bought and paid so little. That`s another story. Talk about great deals.
