there's nothing to want at Pictures Plus in Westgate, Ann Arbor. the people are wonderful, thorough, lean over backward to make sure you're happy, not just satisfied. Kaity particularly, has helped me make jpegs printable which previously timed out, so couldn't be printed. I have brought two unusual custom framing jobs here and was very happy with both finished jobs. They had good suggestions for frames and mattes, the price was reasonable, and they finished both jobs before the expected time. They also have a nice selection of stock frames and I've purchased two stock frames here also. They recently moved into the corner of the same shopping center so while it may look like they have gone out of business, they are just a few doors away from their previous spot. read more

I have gone to Pictures Plus for many years for framing needs and have always been satisfied with the result. I take my time to decide, and like to look at a lot of options, and have not felt rushed. I've gotten several pieces custom framed here, and my last experience made me question if I would return. I dealt with the older gentleman, who asked me what I did for a living when we were figuring out frames, etc. When I told him that I work at the writing center on campus, and that I primarily teach writing to incoming freshmen. His response? To tell me that "those who can't write teach writing." I'm sure the fact that I'm a younger woman factored into his rude response. But honestly, what do you get out of insulting your customer's career other than to boost your own ego? I laughed it off at the moment, but the more I think about it, how could he not know that was incredibly insulting? Additionally, one of the custom framed pieces I picked up had some gunk on the matting, which they did fix... but the person asked if I wanted it fixed, and I was kind of like, well, for the $250 or so I paid for all of this, yes, I want it fixed! read more

This use to be my go to place for my framing needs The last 2 times I took art to have framed mistakes were made my a staff member. I WAS THE ONE that ended up paying more for their mistake! Pictures Plus has always done a great job for me on a wide variety of framing issues. Once, I bought some beautiful jacquard towels from a now-defunct store that sold French imports, and they came up with a lovely mounting for wall display at a very reasonable price. They've recommended a number of other options for art work and posters that have been well received both in the business world and my home. Sometimes I think that people who don't get what they want don't know what they want, or don't know how to work with people to get the desired results...... read more

Pictures Plus has my go to place for framing historic prints for decades. They offer a range of conservation mounting options to preserve art for eternity. The also have outside expert advice on tricky issues, eg, prints stuck to the glass, old taped repairs, warped paintings. They spend as much time as I need to address all concerns, eg, frame choice, mat design, colors, repairs, conservation. They're at their best when I give them difficult jobs. read more

One employee for me really stands out as Faye is just excellent she goes above and beyond to help me with tips and she will put wires on pictures frames I purchased there while I wait. Don't waste your time with these tired coupons at Michaels and the rude staff at Michaels... come here if you really want a great frame job and great staff! read more

Wow. These guys did a wonderful job with the custom frame work. I had a couple of items I wanted to get framed all together and with their help I was able to create something that really turned out great. It is a little pricey so expect to pay for great work but that is exactly what you'll get, great work. Would highly recommend to anyone. read more

great family owned local business, always very helpful whenever I stop by the place, will often make time for my small projects even when they are swamped with other orders; and look for ways to save you money. The price is not cheap to frame anything more than 8x11 but I still recommend them to everyone and their grandparents too. read more

Pictures plus has several nice frames out in thier display area (e.g. non-custom frames) including some nice recycled/repurposed frames from Detroit. When I came into the store the man behind the counter was very patiently working with a young boy who was having something framed and while I don't know what the work looks like, I can say he was particularly patient and helpful in helping the boy pick a frame he liked. Unfortunately, these observations are the only thing that brought the stars to two. I personally waited patiently behind this family at the counter with my art that I had hoped to have framed. No one acknowledged me at all (it's not like the store was bustling, and I was very visible and made eye contact with both of the employees there). I'm not one of those people who needs a lot of special attention at a store, but taking framing orders takes a lot of time and a quick "we'll be right with you" would have been a nice touch, albeit not necessary. The woman working in the store was helping a customer pick a frame from the floor when I arrived. We made eye contact numerous times and she very clearly observed me waiting in line. I waited 15-20 minutes (again, not at all an issue in my mind as framing involves time consuming decisions and I wasn't in a rush per se). The woman rang up the other woman buying premade frames and I was inching towards that spot at the counter (she didn't indicate she was ready for me yet) when a couple walked in the door of the store and walked right to the counter with a pick-up slip (I was positioned in a spot where they wouldn't have seen me) and the woman behind the counter immediately jumped to help them. I then stood right behind them at the counter to make eye contact with her expectedly (as if to say, "hey - yeah - you remember me - the lady you watched standing there for 15-20 minutes patiently and made eye contact with you numerous times? Yeah - still standing here looking back at ya!"). She made eye contact with me (locked in for a sec and everything!) and then went on helping them, literally without acknowledging me at all or telling them I was there first, or even saying "I'll be right with you". I walked in that store mentally steeled for the probability that I would be spending $500-700 in framing for my piece. I was dressed in jeans and flip-flops and a ratty wrap - I suppose I didn't look like I was going to be in a position to drop a chunk there; obviously I hope that had nothing to do with it. Either way, I don't know many businesses that are in a position to just send $700 our the door (because that's where I ended up taking my business) when a simple acknowledgement of a customer would take a mere 2 seconds. What bummed me out the most is that I try whenever possible to go to local businesses over chains and big-box stores which is why I went there (independent of whether that means I need to pay a little more). Unfortunately, 15-20 minutes is too long to wait to try to spend that kind of money, only to be ignored; I won't be returning. read more

I've used Pictures Plus several times. I've been happy mostly, but I was disappointed this last time. Figured I'd post to warn people-- do NOT use the Plak-It system they offer. Not if you like what you want preserved. I should note, they contract this out to a company in Canada, and Pictures Plus refunded my money fully, but only after my originals were lost, 2 months had passed, and I had made a total of at least 6 individual visits to Pictures Plus. Rough sketch: 1. Initial drop off of pictures to be plaked. 2. Pick up #1, got home and found they were flawed 3. Return trip 4. Pick up #2. opened them on the spot and again they were flawed. But in a new way! 5. Return trip to see what's up after an inquiring phone message was not returned after several days. 6. Pick up #3. Replacement plaks are even worse than before. Money returned at this point, with apologies, but originals MIA. Multiple phone calls ensue, with confirmation 2 weeks later than nope, originals are gone. Sigh. And FYI, most of the ready-made picture frames they have on display seem to be not in stock, due to a "supply problem in Thailand". I believe if they took the unavailable frames out of display, the store shelves would be almost empty. read more

I have an oddly shaped print of David Bowie's 1976 mug shot that I put off framing for several months. I called to a couple of other framing shops around Ann Arbor and had some pretty pricey quotes. I ended up choosing Pictures Plus from a friend's recommendation. The staff was super helpful and extremely knowledgeable-- there was a lot more to framing than I understood and they were very descriptive as to what sort of factors go into framing. The print itself is bold--a hot pink. Prior to getting it framed, I thought I wanted this color explosion with a teal frame. The staff member that helped me (I didn't get his name unfortunately) suggested a clean, black frame with a black matting. That immediately changed my mind and I knew that was the better option as soon as he said it. I picked up my print yesterday and it looks absolutely phenomenal. It's classy, draws attention to the print (and Bowie's beautiful cheekbones lol), and the all black was the best choice. I thought the price was absolutely reasonable and the turnaround time was completely fine with me. I will be using Pictures Plus for all other framing jobs I have in the future! read more
