History
Established in 1975.
16 Hands began as an artist's cooperative (with 8 artists) in 1975. It ran as a successful co-op for 13 years, exhibiting only the artwork of its members. At that time it was on Washington Street. Jill Damon joined the co-op in 1978, became sole owner in 1988, and moved the gallery to Main Street. In the fall of 2011 the shop/gallery moved 5 blocks to Kerrytown, which houses the Farmer's Market, a great group shops, and is right near Zingerman's Deli.
We represent hundreds of artists and crafters from throughout the US and Canada, as well as several Fair Trade Organizations. More of a shop than a gallery, 16 Hands is quite diverse and eclectic. Our focus is on jewelry and wearable accessories, unique gifts, garden art, and functional objects for home and office in all media.
Meet the Business Owner: Jill D.
Jill Damon joined 16 Hands in 1978, became sole owner in 1988, and moved the gallery to Main Street in 1990. In the fall of 2011 the shop moved to the Kerrytown Market and Shops - still in downtown Ann Arbor but in a great little historic district called Kerrytown.
16 Hands represents both emerging talent and well known artists/makers, primarily from the US (including many local artists) as well as some from Canada, Europe and several Fair Trade Organizations. The focus of the shop/gallery is on original, finely crafted objects of uncommon quality and character. Jewelry and fashion accessories, unique gifts, decorative and functional items for the home, office and garden are featured. The mix is always changing and evolving.
