Have shopped at USN commissary several times. Well lite. Always seems to be sufficiently stocked Never disappointed.

This commissary is essentially a US Air Force base grocery store. Here's my observations: The pluses: It's easy in, easy out like all grocery stores. You have to have the proper ID to shop here. Prices, especially on meats, is very reasonable. Produce is fresh and reasonably priced. Lots of ethnic foods are available. It's clean and safe. The minuses: They frequently run out of things. Today they had no chicken breasts. Completely out. Last time I was in they were out of pie apples and green beans. The only fish is frozen fish. They always have a sale. Their meat in produce is better than W*mrt. The case lot sale is great value

This commissary is depressing and one of the ladies who works at the checkout is super mean. She has bangs and is always yelling at people. She accused me of having more items in my cart for express checkout which I didn't. But to make her happy, I stood there and counted in front of her every item in my cart. As it turns out, I had two less than the maximum number of items. Besides her, the biggest problem with this commissary is that there are always things being sold past its expiration date. If you go you better check what you buy! I constantly have to check and find that having to do this for every item I buy here ridiculous. I never do this at Meijers! I found something the last time I was there that was expired since 2015! They really need to get it together. Everyone I've talked to about the WPAFB commissary also complains that the produce section here is bad. A lot of things are expired. The last time I was there, the zucchini look pathetic. Why? Because it was a bendable zucchini. A fresh zucchini is NOT bendable. Same with their squash. read more

You have to be careful what you buy. Check the expiration on EVERYTHING. I even told them once that all the hummus was expired, came back the next week and it was all still there! Fruits and vegetables are always on their last legs too. I'm not sure how they don't feel bad stocking some of it. read more

WPAFB Commissary - a grocery store - Grocery Near Me - Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio

What surprises me most about this commissary is that it isn't bigger. Wright-Patterson is a large base, and one would think that the Commissary would be larger. That aside, I find that the overall selection to be quite adequate. The good: I love that this is on base, as it should be. There are deals to be had, and for the most part some major items like cereal and meat are great deals. They have regular pallet sales, and they even sell MRE's (why the MRE's no longer have those cool Tabasco bottles, I'll never know...), which are good for camping and emergency food. The bad: I have no idea why the produce sections of all of the commissaries I have ever visited are kind of disappointing. Granted, they do what they can with what they have, but perhaps DECA should look into who Kroger or Meijier get their veggies from. Can better deals be found elsewhere? Absolutely. But that is true for everything. Does the Commissary provide much of what a person needs? Absolutely. Could it be better? Yes, but that also can be said about any other place. The Commissary definitely provides a service that a smart shopper can use to help reduce the cost of groceries. read more

It is hard to complain when you are getting deep discounts on food. This place is adequately stocked and well maintained. Although their cakes are not gorgeous they are quite tasty, affordable, and have a quick turn around time. For the most part, staff is pretty nice, although they aren't always able to tell you where an item is located. No biggie though. Who am I to complain when I am getting cake mix for $0.95 instead of $2.00? read more

This is one of the larger commissaries that I've visited. They have a wide selection of products and a decent size deli. The best time to go is not on the 1st of 15th. Don't forget to tip your baggers. read more

They oftentimes run out of chicken and turkey especially on weeks that coincide with military pay days. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also be hit or miss but worth a trip for the savings on certain items. read more

I'd take this commissary over my local Scott AFB commissary any day. The set up is much nicer and makes more logical sense (although while they were renovating, this was not the case). I've never had to wait too terribly long to get in and out during the weekly grocery shopping trips. The constant with all commissaries that I've been to is the produce. It's always crap. If you live in the area, buy your fruits and veggies at Meijer -- they taste much better. Lastly, NEVER go on a payday weekend. Ever. read more

I like this commissary but it has some problems, yes. I've been shopping there for about 5 years now. -The recent remodel job was terrible in my opinion. I'm 5'4" and a lot of things are now out of my reach both in the regular grocery aisles and the refrigerated/ frozen food section. What is really terrible to me is that I usually help elderly folks in wheelchairs get things from higher shelves. And there are a lot of elderly customers. The meat section remodel was also a dud for me, now it's cramped and full of extra displays. For some reason there is a huge row of paper towels, why they don't put those in the next whole aisle of toilet paper and use the extra row for all the stupid cardboard displays that clog the aisle is beyond me. They are even using the warehouse for extra flex shopping space again, again, full of cardboard displayers. Sometimes the regular shelf is empty and you have to hunt down a cardboard displayer. It's silly. -Pricing: Hit and miss. Some things are way better priced (for example: my dog food is $10 cheaper here), some things are average/priced about the same as a sale elsewhere (example: milk), and some things seem high (bottled water). It really varies greatly and you need to comparison shop just like every other store. But when it's cheaper it's eye opening cheaper. Everything is a national brand, so comparing things to store brand pricing is unfair. -Produce: oh the produce section. When it's good and fresh it's good but most of the time it's spoiled and ew no. The bananas are kept too cold in storage and usually turn brown before they get ripe (chilled), the potatoes are green, they throw the apples around and they have huge bruises, etc. I have seen moldy lettuce and rotten zucchini. I could go on and on. It's sad. So much waste in the produce section. If it's fresh, it's usually a good price and everybody wins. But sadly, that's not usually the case. I'm under the impression that they order too much and don't rotate properly. -Meat: I come a lot of the time for the meat. Beef/pork/butcher end: The prices are usually good (regular price is sale prices in other stores), the quality of the meat they buy is good, it's usually well stocked and taken care of. The flaw is the packaged meat which includes chicken, turkey, bacon, sausage.The prices are good but many times I have seen this section unstocked/wiped out. Again, an ordering/stocking problem. -Dairy: Yup, those dating problems are usually true. The prices on milk are just so/so, I usually check the dates and if they are too close I just leave it there. I do like the eggs here though. They tend to be ok. The pricing on packaged cheese tends to be amazing. -Bread: Good selection, good pricing. -Frozen food: besides the too tall shelving, it's ok. Sometimes the better selling things are empty, I never see anyone actually stocking either. Good thing, again, too many cardboard displayers in the aisle. When you open the doors you are usually trapped between the door and cardboard. Other customers are stuck waiting on you. -Deli: I like the deli. Sometimes the line is long but I never mind the wait and some of those ladies are downright friendly. -Bakery: I never use it, so I can't compare it to anything else. Small from what I see. There's fresh sushi too. Again, I can't compare. -Checkout: 1st of the month is a madhouse, always expect a line. There are a couple of times a day when it's quiet and civil. TOO MUCH CARDBOARD IN THE LINES. At this point you might want to set fire to the cardboard. It's everywhere and it's THE WORST at the checkout points. Some of the cashiers are just wonderful. Helpful, polite, they pay attention to what they are doing, they greet, they smile, if you are in there enough they might even know you. One or two are awful, I skip their lines if possible. Same with the baggers/some good/some bad. I have some favorites, I tip them more. TIP THE BAGGERS. The parking lot is a parking lot. There are three sections, the area in front of the commissary, a row of trees, the area in front of the exchange, and the way out. The way out isn't really all that way out. Just walk people. The restroom situation is crap. There is no restroom in the actual commissary, it's all the way down the hall halfway to the exchange. I've had to park many a cart and make the long haul with children, why they didn't add one in the remodel I will never know. read more
