Me with my bike!
Austin S.

Everyone I asked recommended Working Bikes, and they didn't disappoint. I bought a refurbished bike for $280 that would have been sold new for $600, and they also have all the used bike attachments you could need. Their staff is so helpful, and even their clientele is, too! Plus, they fix up old bikes and donate them, so supporting them is definitely the right move. They also allow test rides before purchasing.

Bikes, bikes, and bikes galore in a cool urban loft setting! The mission of Working Bikes is basically buy a bike give a bike. Your donation and purchase of a bike helps support their cause to give bikes away to those in need from all around the world. The average bicycle costs somewhere around $200+. You'll leave with a refreshed, fixed up, used bike that has a lot of love from those who volunteer their time to get your bike in working condition. Each bike has a 30-day warranty. If you're not satisfied for any reason, you can exchange it or get a credit for a bike. No cash returns. Word on the street is that people line up first thing in the morning to get the best inventory pick, but we were there in the middle of the day and...well...as you can see from my photos, there are a ton of bikes to choose from! Every corner of the building has something to do with bikes. From high-end bikes to vintage cruiser bikes, to a few kids bikes, they also have bike parts galore and a section of used bike clothing. They have a large onsite repair center, and they also offer community classes where you can learn to care for your bike and keep up with the repairs on your own. It's super crowded and fast-paced in there, so don't expect a typical retail store experience. But, everyone is super duper friendly and cares deeply about the mission. Top Tip: There's a crap load of construction on Western so the traffic, even in the middle of the day, is insane. On Wednesdays during street cleaning, parking is scarce!

I went there today to purchase a bike. I'm extremely happy with it. It rides great. It feels safe, sturdy, and quick. The staff was helpful and laidback. They helped direct me to the bike I needed.

Funny thing happens with kids, they grow up. When they do, if you are busy enjoying your time with them, you don't realize how suddenly you have 4 bikes from your two kids that they have long since outgrown, taking up needed space in your garage. Dealing with this is how I stumbled upon Working Bikes. Play it Again Sports didn't want the two nicer ones this spring, and the two older ones were still serviceable, but not bikes Play it Again would have even considered. What to do? Throwing them away seemed wasteful, silly, and almost unacceptably privileged. These bikes could still be used. With a call to Working Bikes I learned they would enthusiastically welcome the donation of all four bikes, and they were actively looking for some better kids bikes for local Christmas gifts for this year. I had one, probably two, kids bikes that would make excellent gifts. Getting to their location on 23rd in Western is a bit of a trip, but they now own their building, and can do their good work there, and they will be able to stay there for years to come as they work to fulfill their mission. So slightly out of the way, yes, but if you are smart like I wasn't, you could plan your trip around a stop to Lagunitas Brewery, and all would be VERY, VERY, good. Supporting a charity and having good local beer, a near perfect day. What I didn't realize when I drove down there, is that they support their mission, not just by fixing and shipping bikes to locations where bikes are needed across the globe, but they repair, sell, and service bikes and bike parts, to raise money for their mission as well. Everyone, or almost everyone there is a volunteer, and man are they ever enthusiastic about bikes. Infectiously so. AND what interesting bikes they had. From cheap kids bikes to affordable Treks and Schwinns, to expensive racing and hand crafted bikes, and all sorts of things in between. Had I known about this place early in the summer of 2018, I would have made my two bike purchases from them instead of from the reseller and Facebook sites I did. Prices were comparable, and hell, their mission is darn compelling, which is no doubt why WBEZ's Jerome McDonnell, and this fall's Chicago Architecture Center, Chicago Open House, have both featured them. My wife's old bike is probably the next to be donated to Working Bikes, and when we do that, I think we will just go ahead and buy her next bike there. Just seems like the right and good thing to do for all involved. Oh, and did I mention that after I made my donation, they gave me a great pint beer glass with their logo on it? Yeah, like they are just daring me to drive past Lagunitas on my way home without stopping there first. GO HERE and donate your old bikes. Or go here and buy a used bike at a fair and reasonable price. BUT GO HERE. It is places like this that make Chicago GREAT!

I moved from SF to Chicago days before the shelter in place order. I wanted a bike to be able to explore the city. I had never bought a bike online before (the only option with the storefront closed) so I found a few that seemed like good options and emailed Working Bikes. Phil quickly got back to me and we had two long conversations about all of the things I'm looking for in a bike. He had searched the website and had a couple recommendations for me too. He even tested the weights and did some extra measurements for me. I went and picked up the bike and am SO PLEASED with it. Seriously a great experience.

These guys ROCK! Working Bikes is a cooperative that promotes cycling as transportation, sells reconditioned bikes out of their little shop on S. Western Ave., salvages bikes and sends them to communities in other countries where folks need transportation to get to and from work or school. And they have a slew of really cool volunteers that are just nutty for bikes! If you need a road-ready bike and aren't too particular about the asthetics, Working Bikes sells 'em for between $40 - 90. Hours: Wed, Sat and Sun 12N - 5P

So pretty!!

Had a wonderful experience not only learning a thing or two about bikes but also finding the best bike for me. Thank you Kiki!

Ask the Community - Working Bikes

Do you have used bike parts?

We have tons of used parts, and they're affordable too! Stop on by during our Walk-In shopping hours and dig the crates

I was also wondering if your $200-$250 aluminum road bikes are not just traditional but also more modernized or newer than traditional? Also do you have any major discounts coming up on the modern $900-$1,000 road bikes?

Hi Nick, For the most part, the aluminum road bikes at that price point tend to be more…

Do you guys carry any entry level aluminum road bikes with 58 cm frames that don't crack easily for no more than $500?

Hi Nick, thanks for reaching out! We stock inventory very differently than most places due to the nature that we procure and refurbish bikes, and we tend to move it pretty quickly. Our sales floor changes almost daily, and we do sometimes have…

After traipsing through a million Chicago bike shops, my quest for the best ultimately led me to my local Trek dealer, Village Cycle Center - and their remarkably patient salesperson named Pierce (no relation to Pierce Brosnan... or so he says). Pierce answered all my annoying questions, after which he asked me several of his (they were not annoying). He then put me on a bike and measured me against various bike angles, before walking me through my various road bike options. No other salesperson spent as much time with me and no other bike shop made me feel so confident in my choice as Village Cycle. Bottom line: I bought a Trek Domane. And I love it.

My main gripe at this point is not about any work done on my bike but rather about the inner tube offering. I have been going to get inner tubes for years at Village and they don't last at all. They are usually over in a summer and with very little usage. In fact they deflate over time. I always see the same inner tubes there, so I am wondering if they have any other options. I haven't been this summer. Hopefully they have some other selection but I doubt it. It's as if no one has raised an issue about them.

We went to the Chicago Field Museum and spent hours on end splashing in the waves at Ohio Street Beach each day. Our counselors took us on a fun side quest to observe Chicago's sky line from the south side of Chicago's perspective. Our counselors, Matt and Eden were exceptional!! Matt knew a ton about Chicago's history and architecture. He was really engaging and would play football with us. Eden is a natural leader and ensured that kids were safe while having a good time. Overall I had an excellent time at Bobby's Bike Hike.

Chicago Favorites Food & Walking Tour…read more Bottom Line Up Front: Tour: 5 Stars Food: 3.5 Stars Value: 3.5 Stars First of all, the tour was amazing thanks to our tour guide, Braeden. He was super passionate about the city and the food and was a wealth of knowledge on both topics. He also was very charismatic and when he shared stories of Chicago and the food, time flew by. Reflecting on the tour afterwards, my girlfriend and I remembered so many different things we learned because he was so good at keeping things interesting. In terms of the food, we hit the core Chicago staples of deep-dish pizza, roast beef sandwiches, and Chicago-style hotdogs. This was supplemented by a very small bag of popcorn and a small fudge bar. Now I've been on 20+ food tours and for a 3.5 hour tour costing $85, I'm used to 5-6 full food stops with 1-2 small bites compared to the 3 full food stops and 2 small bites, so that fell short. The tour also had an excessively large group with 14 people while many food tours are capped at 10 guests. This led to a few stops selected solely to accomodate a large group that had no significance to being authentically Chicago or foodie-driven like eating the Chicago-style hotdog at the touristy Millenium Hall (3.5 stars on Yelp). If you want to balance both the food and the tour of the city, then I'd recommend this tour for you. However, if you're only in it for the food, there might be better options out there.
