Sprucing up our bikes!
Nicole G.

Dan's is such a great local bike shop! How awesome is it that they've had this business since the 40's? I also learned they're third generation which I think is really cool. We popped in here last weekend to get some chain oil for our bikes. We didn't have a preference on the type so we were just peeking around. We were greeted when we walked in right away and everyone inside was wearing masks. The open concept here is great so you can easily see the bike selection. They also have a ton of parts and accessories to choose from. The chain oil was appropriately priced and we were able to find it easily. Everything in the shop was neatly organized and they asked if we needed help finding anything. They also have two shop dogs!! I love seeing animals welcome indoors and just lovin' life. We wish we had more time to shop around here because of all the things we didn't have time to check out. Overall, such a warm experience and we recommend if you need any items or repairs for your bike!

Consistently great service and fair prices. I always feel like I'm getting taken care of when I bring a bike needing repair into their shop.

At checkout, the total I was charged was double what she had told me. While I was there, I overheard the price she gave the customer ahead of me. When I came back, I asked her whether that was his final price, and she said yes. I then asked why I was treated differently. We had discussed the new tire and the cost of the service up front, so there was no reason for my total to double at checkout. Quoting one price at intake and charging twice that at the register is dishonest, and charging me differently than the customer before me for the same service felt deliberate and discriminatory. The Alderman will be notified about this establishment. COMMENT 2 reference google review. Following owner response since i am unable to reply. You are not stating the facts and I confronted you about the situation in that very moment as it happened. I asked you specifically if you had given a different price to the white gentleman that left the establishment? You stated that you had given him his final price. I then followed up with the question why are you treating me differently? You doubled my price at check out? There is no misunderstanding in providing a service and treating the service differently depending on your customers, your actions were deliberate and you didn't shy away from it in that present. I regret walking in there and am grateful you revealed yourself in such a manner. Will definitely avoid moving forward. I would hope that if you have any government grants or government funding that this message be taken seriously and an investigation be conducted regarding difference in price and treatment. I take it you found it a bad idea to display how proud you were of treatment in your writing. You seemed fairly convinced in that present and maybe you should truly express how you feel toward certain humans so that you only get the business you desire. It will avoid negative reviews and allow you to target and access your desired business. I can help design your work flows to ensure a more consistent experience is rendered to your customers. Ill write you the bill at checkout once the work is completed. Let me know that way i can delete this posting and grant validity to your claim of honesty and non discrimination at the register. Heres a free tip maybe display prices. https://www.credly.com/badges/3a9a3c9b-5c89-4a8f-a913-01f6b17dc771/public_url

I bought a tube and something else and it was quite expensive, but I was willing to pay more to support them and their mission. I have read a lot of the other reviews on here and I'm deeply saddened by what I see. I did not feel pressured by Sam... we talked bikes and classic cars for a solid half hour and got along great. A couple bad review could be ignored but it sounds like there may be some issues here. I guess the answer is go in and see for yourself.

When my sister asked how we'd know if the helmet was fitted tightly enough, the associate helping us just said "you should know" which is not exactly helpful when you're trying to get it right for a toddler. He stood with us the entire time we tried the helmet on and never once mentioned that there's a $15 "try on" fee. We only found out when we said we wanted to look at other options before deciding, and he suddenly informed us we owed $15 because he wasn't going to "lose business" so we could "look it up online for a cheaper price." For the record, price wasn't the issue; the helmet just seemed low quality and we wanted to check reviews before buying anything for a toddler's safety. If the fee had been mentioned upfront, we would've made an informed choice from the start. Instead it felt like it was sprung on us only once we tried to leave, which came across as pressuring and manipulative rather than transparent. I haven't seen this fee mentioned in other reviews of this shop, which made the whole interaction feel even more off and predatory to make customers buy something before leaving. We really wanted to buy local. Unfortunately, this experience means we won't be back.

But that would've likely stopped the upselling I started to see. So I turned me and my bike around and left. It's hard for me to be on my feet that long. That's why I bike. Dood has a right to be into his subject matter. Usually shops want you to feel comfortable and respected as somewhat of a priority, even if you aren't being directly pitched at the moment... it just was not a good vibe. All doods working there when I was in. Way heavy on the dood vibe. Captive audience syndrome. Sigh. Dood has to do what a dood does. I avoid places like this. Going to the bike collective in Rogers Park instead next time.
