I was biking by this great shop last week and realized I've never taken the time to write a review. I look for a few things in a local bike shop: expertise, enthusiasm and honesty. Bike fix has all three. I only regret that I keep my bikes for 10-20 years and do most of the maintenance myself so I don't frequently need service or sales, but when I do I can rely on Bikefix to have solutions, whether it's just a new set of tires or advice on a complete bike. I have gone here a few times now to get my bike up and running after a few years of not riding and they are so nice. They make sure what they sell you works for you. After I did the basic maintenance I could figure out, I brought my bike in because I was still having issues. They showed me what they did and walked me through the issue and how to fix it next time (my tires weren't tight after changing tubes... really basic but I am learning ) They offered advice for future upgrades, but weren't trying to sell me something. Incredibly talented and kind repair shop. I started a project with my son that involved disassembling the bike and I couldn't get it back together correctly. So, I don't know a ton about bikes, and I have a really unimpressive bike I got for $20 that I use to get around town. I've taken it in to Bikefix twice - once to see if it needed a tuneup and once because I was having a problem with it. I had great experiences both times. Bill treated my fairly craptastic bike with the care and attention he'd give to a high-end bike. He was honest and upfront about what it needed and whether it was worth repairing, and he explained everything in detail. He also gave me some really useful pointers about what to look for in a replacement bike. He and Curt are just genuinely nice people who clearly love what they do. Got a new wheelset, carbon fork, and other bits for my Soma ES. I'm a home bike builder with a limited set of tools and skills, but I have some vision and ability to figure out what will work together. Curt and Bill built up my wheels (my second set of wheels built by them, amazing as the first set) and installed the carbon fork for me. I only hope my words here can provide the shop and staff justice for the outstanding service they've provided me time and again. The short of it - Curt and Bill, the Bikefix team, are down-to-earth, knowledgable, and forthcoming. These guys are awesome. Forget any premonition of the 'condescending bike shop mechanic'. You know, the snob behind the counter at other shops who ignores you, scoffs at your questions, all-the-while twisting his goatee. Instead you'll find Curt, Bill, and Lizzy - the shop canine, who will make you feel welcomed as soon as you walk into the shop. And they can happily assist with just about anything. Repairs - simple or complex - no problem. Bikes for all creeds: roadie, cyclocross, urban commuter, touring bike, etc. - whatever you need. All at very reasonable prices. The kicker - and this is what really what sets Bikefix apart from the rest, is the exceptional (and I'd like to underline 'exceptional') customer service. The long of it - My own experience with Bikefix is as such - in the Spring of 2012, a longtime friend and I put into works the planning of a bicycle tour from Alaska to Argentina. Upon coming into Bikefix and meeting Curt and Bill for the first time, we presented our ambitions and a blueprint of our bikes to-be with a list of components, accessories, and so on. From there a relationship developed with the shop that has been absolutely critical to the success we've had with our bikes thus far. Curt and Bill worked with us on every detail, helped us stay on budget, were always up-front, never sold us on any unnecessary component, and answered every question we could possibly throw at them. So I was heartbroken when my bike was actually stolen in Canada. But once more Bikefix helped out, rebuilding a replica LHT on short notice, even discounting the service cost. I've been looking for a bike and have been to many local shops. I have walked by this shop many times, so I decided to go in. It is small and the bikes they have are high end racer styles, not for the casual rider (unfortunately). I did my research about Bianchi (they are dealer) and asked about the cruiser which is in the same price range as most other makes. Something like that would have to be prepaid, ordered and it was yours, no trying it out first, etc. For me that wouldn't work. I haven't been on a bike for probably 30 years and not being able to try out first isn't an option. Bill said my best bet would be Barnard's on North Avenue a family owned business that has a large selection of bikes for the casual rider. Bill also said that I only need two things when riding - my keys and a lock. The quality of the lock I purchase depends on how far did I want to walk home if the bike was stolen. Very wise words. It was too bad that I couldn't purchase anything at this shop because I felt these guys would stand behind anything they sold, but it would be easy to take a bike there to have any work done on it, or to buy a lock that would fit the bike I finally end up with. read more

Bikefix does it again!! This time it was a broken front spoke. Upon dropping off my front tire I simply inquired of the wait because I come all the way from Romeoville. Steven said they were pretty busy, but if I stayed around the area, perhaps to do errands, he could bump me ahead. Only 2 hours later, $25, received my newly fixed front tire. Very happy. Not a good shop for buying a road bike. Spend your money elsewhere. I recently went into Bikefix to check out their selection of Bianchi road bikes, as there was a particular model on closeout that I was interested in. Took a test ride and liked the bike very much. It was slightly larger that what I was used to, but sizing on road bikes can vary from company to company, so I trusted the judgement of the salesman Bill, who waited on me. During the next couple of days, all I heard from Bill was what he couldn't do for me. Some examples: The cranks for the bike in question were too small, as Bill himself admitted when I questioned him about them. He told me I'd have to pay an extra $25 for them to source the correct size. For something which should have been on the bike in the first place? I noticed that the traditional Bianchi celeste green saddle really didn't come close to matching the green color of bar tape on the bike. Bill laughed that one off, stating that if I give it enough time, one of the two will fade anyway, so eventually it wouldn't matter. As all "roadies" know, the fit of the bike to the rider is crucial. When I asked if a fitting was included, Bill stated that "we don't do measurements here to fit people to bikes. It's all sort of a try-it-and-see method." I've never before seen a store selling road bikes that wouldn't take body measurements to fit riders. Thus I determined that I would most likely be taking the bike elsewhere to a certified fitter to perform a proper road bike fit and this would involve another $120, if I wanted to be dialed in correctly. ($120 + $25 = $145 extra for a supposed closeout sale) Just as I was about to give a $200 down-payment on the bike, I asked Bill about their return policy. Because the bike is a closeout, I was told they only give buyers 48 hours to return the bike. I tried to explain how that would make it tough to ensure that I'd have time to be fitted properly and get the bike back to them in case it really isn't the right size (since they don't do measurements). I was told their 48 hour return limit "is set in stone." Then I asked Bill about a tuneup to adjust for natural cable stretch after a breaking-in period; something that ANY bike shop should offer to new bike purchasers. He got all vague, and suggested "uhm...we'll take care of it somehow." Eventually I left a voicemail stating that I didn't see this working out; thanks but no thanks. Got a voicemail in return later from the owner Curt, who said he'd "work with me" to make this happen...and that I could have more time for a return, if that sounded interesting. The only time BikeFix was willing to do something to make the sale go easier was when I was walking away from it. The bottom line is I'm sure this shop is good for family bikes and such, but for serious road cyclists I'd consider buying a bike elsewhere. read more

My main reasons for taking off stars is the price-- $85 base price for a tune-up. If you've kept you bike indoors and generally take good care of it, it might be better to take it somewhere else (or even find a at-home bike mechanic on craig's list or angie's list) for your seasonal tune-up. I guess back in Colorado, experienced bike mechanics are a dime a dozen and I wouldn't expect to pay more than $40-$50 for a tune-up. That being said, I think this is a great place to go if your bike needs a little more TLC. Here's an example breakdown of my costs: Chain replacement: $15 + $10 labor Rear cable + housing and caps replacement: $8 + &15 labor Break cable housing replacement: $4.50 + $12 labor rear break shoes: $7.49 =$10 labor As you can see, labor is the main expense here--I appreciate that they took $30 of the labor charges off my total bill because they already charged $85 for the tune-up. I didn't mind paying that much for labor when replacing parts because they have a good eye, worked quickly (4 day turn around during a busy spring week when everyone is taking their bike out of the garage), and didn't try to upcharge me on parts or sell me anything that I didn't need. As far as I can tell, the shop is run by two very nice guys (not snobby bike shop sitters that you might find in other places) and a sweet (but a little shy) dog. I have to say being greeted by the dog when I came in was a pleasant surprise and reminded me of the various locally owned bike shops in Colorado-- definitely another perk! Street parking was easy, but you might need a little help getting your bike in and out of the shop (the door is kind of heavy and doesn't hold open) Ultimately, my bike has never felt better--smooth and easy ride and feels like new. I thank BikeFix and their expertise in bringing my older and weathered bike back to life. Lastly, they have the basic bike accessories on their wall, but not a ton of choices for bargain hunters. One suggestion I have for the owners: student, teen/senior and seasonal discounts on tune-ups, or an explanation of various "al la carte" tune-up services and correlating prices on your website. read more

He is great because I don't often know what questions to ask so he asks me how the bike is riding, how long I've had it, etc. I really recommend him. After having my bike for nearly 4 years I experienced my first crash. I was riding Bike the Drive and this lady wiped out in front of me, causing me to slam on my brakes. I literally flew off my bike. The handlebars and shifters were all mangled afterwards and my mind instantly shifted to how much I would have to pay for this tragedy. My expectation was that I would have to pay upwards of $300 to fix my mistake. Fast forward to Bikefix. My mother brought in my bike to the shop to have it looked at since I was incapable of using my left hand after my massive wipeout. Curt was able to immediately diagnose the problem and, with what I assume to be a magic wand, completely fix the handlebars. The best part? FREE. FREE. FREE. It truly does pay to stay local. I will never go to any other bike shop, so long as Bikefix is around. read more

I stopped by here just about at closing time to buy parts for a used bike I had just bought in the neighborhood onto which I am going to install cables, brake levers, shifters etc. I was happily surprised to find someone who *loves* bikes and riding. The shop owner Curt (and another guy whose name I didn't get) gave me advice I didn't know I needed- but did need- about matching components, about brakes, tire width, rim width, bar tape, I learned a ton of stuff in the half hour I spent in the store. He was very generous with his time and info sharing, which is often not the case in bike shops, where the staff will give generic answers without details, because, I presume, they hope to make a service or parts sale. The only complaint I have is that he chose to locate his store in Oak Park, which is far from where I live, ;) read more
