I've been meaning to stop by Kozy's for a long time. I've lived in Avondale for quite a few years, and have a number of friends who have purchased bikes/gear from here. I have heard nothing but great things, outside of a mild warning about how pricey it can get. Which makes sense if you're trying to purchase/take care of a nice bike from a high-end bike shop. It has been a while since I've owned a bike, so naturally I had a lot of questions--which might have initially made me feel stupid, especially because I was ALSO worried it would be an issue that I brought in a bike I purchased from somewhere else--but the Kozy team was amazing. Shekinah answered all of my questions simply and concisely. There was never an "upsell" vibe as she explained things, but as she walked me through the different options it was clear WHY she was recommending some of the more expensive items I was looking at. Specifically, she let me know why some of the longer/sturdier locks are more effective for protecting more of the frame (I went with the Abus Bordo 6055K LITE). She explained even further that someone would need significant time with some pretty heavy tools to break through the joints of the lock. It was all extremely helpful and informative. Especially for someone like myself, who commutes downtown and has concerns over theft. Shekinah got me set up with new handle grips (with some tips on how to install them effectively), an additional cable lock for my front tire (which will eventually be replaced by the locking prong for extra security), and ALSO removed a shitty bike rack for me that was rusted and ugly lol. She also looked over my new bike, reassured me that it was a solid purchase, and offered to have the mechanics take a look for a professional opinion. But I was satisfied and already knew at that point I'd be back if I ever needed anything. I'm REALLY happy that it was such a good first experience, because I was ready to get defensive if the bike dudes were rude, haha. But there was absolutely no reason for that, and I'll absolutely be back. It'll be my go-to bike shop for repairs, maintenance, or any other sort of upgrades. I should also mention, it also wasn't quite as expensive as I was anticipating. Everything was super reasonably priced for how high-end it was. Thank you Shekinah! I've bought two new bikes from Kozy's in the last three months and their sales and service teams have far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I decided to trust them with a bike fitting (thanks, Luis!) and that has really transformed both my confidence and overall performance. Today, Matt took great care of my bike after a minor accident. I arrived shortly after 11 as a walk-in and was on my way again by 11:10! Darryl provided similar excellent service recently. I recently went to Kozy's to get an SE Bike. I had a few questions, however Luis and Sherdon were able to answer them all. Luis was the one providing all the information, so my mom understood why it was a good bike for me, and when they were doing that, I was riding it around their basement. Which is another thing you can do, test out the bikes! I decided I loved the Big Flyer 29 inch in White and Orange, and they didn't need to ship, grab backstock or anything, they just sold it to me off the shelf! Kozy's Cyclery - Northwest - Milwaukee Ave Store - they are kind of a rip off. One hour of work $350!!!! I get there are brand new wheels, but you have no chill when it comes to price gouging in a pandemic. I would recommend to take your business to Johnny Sprockets or another family owned business instead of these corporate ruled bike shops. And their employees are rude as usual, especially on the phone. Boo!!! Can't even install bike handle wraps unless you pay big $$$ - so lazy! The 20-somethings in the store must not know anything about bikes to help my friend, who is new to riding a bike in city. All they saw were dollar signs in their eyes. They even say that sage to cleanse a new, used bike is not a real thing! Y'all must want people to get into accidents or die or have your bike break down so we need to come by to Kozy to get ripped off again. Wheels are not trued, brakes not tightened. Such a a great business you run! No wonder this place is one of the most poorly reviewed bike shops in Chicago! I have bought several bikes here over the last 5 years, because it is near my house. Never been thrilled with their attitude, but it's convenient and we just don't ask for help from the rude staff. I just called to ask if they do spring tune ups and the jerk who answered the phone in service said "yes, we are a bike shop after all" in a snotty tone of voice. Okay, thanks - I'm done! Kozy has been my Pandemic Love Affair! Each time I that I've walked in there I leave feeling like I've been equipped to take care of all of my biking needs..... Welp, that feeling doesn't last long and I'm back again.. Each time one of the bike technicians or front end staff will take their time with me and answer all my questions and fix whatever issues I'm having, with my bike of course and I'll leave again feeling very confident with all the knowledge and it's because of their patience and the way they build me up, "you can do this", they say and once again, I leave smiling and feeling full of myself. I have about a 50-50 record with getting the job done. Kozy has been my go to neighborhood bike shop for many years and after three visits within four days I'm up and running on my trainer. My experience with one staff member was possibly one of the worst I have ever experienced. I called to inquire if the Fuji Track was still in stock. The staff member asked my height and said the 49 would be too small. I said I was all torso with short legs. He said in a condescending tone, "if you want to buy a bike that doesn't fit, I'd be happy to sell it to you". I decided to head up to look at it anyway. When I was being helped, the staff asked me if I was the person who called earlier. I said yes. He was visibly annoyed that I didn't take his advice and came to the store. He held the bike for me with the front wheel between his legs. He was an older white guy and he struggled to keep the bike balanced. He immediately asked me where my eyes were looking. I said down. I was anxious about him being able to provide support. I was also concerned that during COVID, I was fitting the bike with my head inches from his. My legs struggled to reach the pedals at the 6 0'clock part of stroke. I also told him that I planned to swap out the drops for risers. And when I did the fit, my hands were on the top parts of the drops, so essentially that same geometry I had when I bought the bike. I have since made it a more aggressive geometry and I love it. I did not get the bike. He said it didn't fit. I then realized if the seat was lowered about an inch, the bike would fit. I called up and bought the bike. Dorian brought the bike out and adjusted the seat (btw, Dorian was great). The seat is not slammed (the seatpost has about 4 inches sticking out of the frame). I have since slammed and flipped the stem. Since I am all torso, I was too upright. I'd be happy to provide photos of how my cockpit is set up (I'll post his review to yelp with a photo). I understand that height quite often can be an indicator of fit. But the staff member who helped me was older, caucasion and in his 50s. He talked ad nauseam about his fixed gear days. I wish he had saved his stories for drinks with co-workers and adjusted the seat. I don't understand that for all his years and claimed bike knowledge, he didn't get the memo about the variance of the human body. And for all this knowledge, not understand the three contacts a rider has with the bike. He never even looked at the seatpost. And I told him the Fuji Track was the bike I wanted after doing research. It almost felt like he was more concerned with being right than making a sale. This is my first bike in 20 years. I was a bit intimidated. It was only in hindsight that I realized this guy did not know what he was doing. Keep in mind that this was during COVID. I waited in line for OVER an hour. Bikes were scarce and this guy simply wasn't up to the task. If I did not get this bike then, the only option would have been Bikesdirect and a 2 month wait for a Mercier track bike. But I would not have had the luxury to fit this frame. read more

The guys in the service department got me back up and running in less than a week despite needing to order parts; so I could make it on a trip for more mountain biking! I was happy with my experience purchasing a helmet, gloves, and shorts. The shoes selection was limited to clearance for women but I was in kind of a rush so I got the one pair that seemed to fit. This was my first time purchasing bike shoes. The person who rang me up offered to install the cleats which I appreciated at the time. Back at home after one ride around the block the shoes felt too big. When I called to ask if I could return the shoes without a receipt (which I had lost) I was told I couldn't return shoes that had cleats installed. I wish they had told me that was the policy before they installed them. Also the mount covers appear to have been glued on with shoe glue by a previous customer. So basically I was sold a product that had been doctored to look new (which I imagine the sales person noticed) and then was denied a return because the salesperson rendered them unreturnable. This is disappointing and makes me not want to bring my business back here in the future. read more

What happened to this place? Since the pandemic the service staff has become very curt and unfriendly. They seem like they barely care about anyone that comes in with bike trouble. I wish the service staff would take notes from the front desk cashiers, who are always friendly. Also, maybe it's their closed door policy, but the formerly automatic service entrance door doesn't open and no staff comes to open it. I've watched multiple customers pry the service entrance door open with their fingers, and once inside, the service staff barely looks up. What is going on?? read more

I bought a bike here a little over a year ago. I've since returned here many time -- purchasing accessories, having issues fixed -- it was great. They're nice people, good service. One of the deals that I got when I bought the bike was a free tune-up after a year. Spring is springing, and it's been a little over a year since I bought the bike, so I brought it in for the tune-up. It turns out that I was a few days late for the free tune-up. I didn't know this -- I may have when I bought the bike, but it's been a year. The only thing in my mind was "I'm glad I got that tune-up coming to me when I start riding again." The mechanic informed me about the small print when I dropped the bike off. However, I figured, hey, I've spent about 3 grand here over the past year, I tip outrageously, I'm a fairly nice guy, and I think I've developed a relationship with these people; why wouldn't they honor the tune-up? What's a month amongst friends? (Actually the cut-off date was the end of Feb, I dropped the bike off around the 16th of March, so it was ~16 days.) When I left the bike there, I was under the impression that they would probably not charge me. Well, of course they did. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but I had this place pegged differently! I'm not saying that they shouldn't have charged me -- but if I was running the place, I certainly wouldn't charge me. Even from a financial standpoint, it doesn't make sense. Charge this once and never see the customer again or hook them up and see them forever and ever? Make the relationship with the customer count! That sounds whiny, but it's true. Anyways, it was weak, and I won't be back. From my experience, they do good work, but just keep in mind -- you're just a customer. Of course, now I need a good bike mechanic... read more

I've loved this LBS since returning to bicycling 10+ years ago (love the indoor track upstairs where you can ride/ try out bikes unlike other stores.) But I believe their people really make this store stand out - ime they've been welcoming, knowledgeable & very helpful. I went in to buy a high visibility MIPS helmet a few weeks ago but couldn't find my desired fit & color due to covid-low inventory. Raquel began a crusade to find me a helmet, checking incoming shipments and inventory at other Kozy locations. In response to her 3rd update call yesterday I stopped in & purchased a highly rated Echelon II MIPS for under $50. I'm amazed and grateful Raquel went to such lengths for a relatively small sale! And while I was there service did a quick adjustment of my bike's gears & mounted a sub $10 bottle holder for free (I tipped in appreciation of great service!). read more

I was in the area when my bike broke down.. issue with the chain. This was the closest location so I went. Someone at the shop looked at my bike and said "This is unfixable" quite matter of factly. Oh.. I was taken aback by that answer because HOW? Perplexed and irritated I left it a block away. The next day, my man, the angel that he is, says he will try to fix it (disclaimer: He is not a professional just a smart, beautiful, & savvy man). WELL APPARENTLY, HE IS ALSO A MIRACLE WORKER because he fixed it (WOW). Do with this information as you please about how knowledgeable they are at Kozy's Cyclery. This was the worst experience I've had service wise in a long time. Went in for bike clicking and ended up getting annual service. No problem there. Left the shop noticed over the weekend the clicking continued. Came back, don't know his name but he was really helpful noticed some things that were missed in the annual and addressed them and apologized. Even replaced my pedals at no charge because recognized and took accountability that were mistakes were made. I really appreciated that. Left, couple weeks later noticed the same clicking noise. This time Darryl was to help me. He said he remembered my bike and saw changes that he believed should have been made to it but didn't say anything at the time because he didn't want to go over any of his colleagues heads? It would have been nice because it would have saved me a trip if he saw a possible issue and mentioned it then but ok. I came back for my bike after work. He had replaced bottom bracket. Cool left with the bike and heard the clicking so immediately came back. He asked me to ride it outside so he could listen. I asked if it made more sense that he rode it so he could hear it better. No response so I said ok I can try and ride it and he responded and I quote he said "It's the least you can do." I'm going to be honest this really upset me. You are not doing me a favor. Ive been kind and patient and at the very least I expect the same back. I've spent 4 trips which breaks down to 24 miles, so around 2 hours and 40 min of riding back and forth to this shop to get this resolved. I've paid for an annual, fenders, and replacement part, in addition I waited in shop for over an hour the second time to have issues addressed, so what do you mean by it's the least I can do? Not a kind response when all I did was make a suggestion so we could get this RESOLVED more efficiently. Alright so I rode my bike for him he heard the clicking, worked on it, rode it himself took off my bike lock had me ride it again on my own. Still heard the clicking. Told him that he said he didn't hear it anymore and that it must have been my bike lock, it was not. My bike was still clicking. Instead of saying "I don't know where the sound is coming from, I can't help you" he gaslit me and said he couldn't hear it anymore. Not cool at all. It's honestly not the fact that they couldn't resolve it. It's just the way I was treated through the process. read more

Bought my bike from here last year and have been back several times. The staff has gone above and beyond on more than one occasion. The service dept is expert. I had a bike fitting here and it changed the way I ride. Good selection, pricing, accessories, service, and free parking. Only downside is biking down Belmont or Addison to get there. You can ride in the middle of the lane and get honked at, ride on the side and trash your tires on broken pavement, or ride on the broken sidewalks and dodge angry pedestrians. read more

Excellent bike purchasing experience at Wrigleyville location this past February. Found an excellent sale price for Cannondale Synapse on Kozy's website. Spoke with Eric at Kozys who told me that my preferred bike size/color was in stock but not built. However, Eric and his crew had my bike built within 2 hours while I drove from far Northwest suburbs. Bike was ready for a test ride and purchase prior to my arrival. Eric and other employees were very pleasant and knowledgeable about bikes. I already have logged 350 plus winter miles on my new Synapse. Everything was properly assembled, bike rides great. Just wish that we had a Kozy's in the far Northwest suburbs (McHenry County). Thanks! read more

Was looking for Ebikes (hot new craze) and they had very little in inventory and the expert was not familiar with many brands except the small inventory they had on hand. I guess no one wants to invest the inventory dollars to become the ebike experts and sell $2,000-$5,000 bikes. read more

The store allowed some guy to grab 2 of his douchey friends who weren't in the line to cut in front of the 10 other customers who have been waiting patiently to get into the store thus forcing them to wait longer in the sun versus implementing some sort of control and ensure that customers coming to spend their money can enter in a timely matter. read more

I will NEVER buy from this place again. My last visit was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back. I usually disregard the employees rudeness because this is the closest large bike shop to my home. I waited at the locked door for at least five minutes. While ONE customer shopped inside, and an employee watched me waiting to be let in. She then decided to walk away and go upstairs leaving me to wait. Finally a man opened the door with no greeting, and frankly made me feel unwelcome. But being the guy I am, I disregarded his lack of professionalism and asked how his day was going. Were he responded "fine, can I help you with something" as if I were burdening him by speaking to him. I walked upstairs to purchase some products. I asked another employee a question about the cycling gloves, were he gave me a short answer that did not pertain to my question and walked away. As I was walking out of the store none of the employees acknowledged my presence. I called the shop as soon as I got to my car and I asked to speak to the manager. To my surprise he was the same man who treated me like a pest when opening the door earlier. After explaining the customer service that was given to me, he told me it didn't happen that way. I tried to explain to him what happened although we both were there and know exactly what took place. He told me I was lying about the whole experience. I think he told me his name was Rolan. He helped me with the purchase of a mountain bike and also has been tirelessly searching for a bolt to an old Thule bike rack for me. Needed a quick tire repair and was going to go for an annual tune-up. Service team was available immediately, looked at my bike to diagnose any needs, and then advised me that everything (except the tire) was good to go. Instead of paying for unnecessary maintenance, I got what I needed and was in and out in 20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. This Kozys location is great! The staff are all very wonderful and helpful, and they know their stuff! You definitely need to wear a mask and respect their Covid-19 restrictions if you visit, but they're doing it to keep everyone safe. I stopped in to buy two kids bikes, and had a mixed experience. The guy running the sales floor was pretty helpful, and worked with us on price for one of the bikes. We paid for everything, and agreed to come back in an hour or so to give the mechanics time to tune them up. We came back to pick up the bikes, and there were 3 people behind the counter. None of them ackowledged our presence, so we had to flag a guy down to get some service. He told us in a not-so-friendly way that we need a receipt from the front desk, and we need to go sort it out with them. Instead of helping us out, he bounced us over to another bunch of people who didn't acknowledge our presence. Rinse and repeat, after some time and waving our hands in the air, we finally get the bikes with no "thanks for your business", "take it easy", or "go kick rocks". I probably don't look like a bike person due to my lack of jean shorts and Tour de France flipped hat thing, so Im guessing this might be a case of discrimination against civilians. I'll have you know that I have seen Quicksilver, I have never doored anybody, and I had a 10 speed back in the 90's, so your rudeness is unwarranted. Next time, Ill go to Bacardi bikes because they may/may not be any more welcoming than you, and I heard they give out free shots of 151. read more

Tip: Make sure you get the Groupon to get $80 off an adult bike. This place have a really big collection to match every price range specially with the Groupon promo that they have. They have multiple locations around the city and they can check the inventory if the bike you want in a different size is available at other locations or if you didn't find the brand you want. Just ask!! If you buy a bike the have a warranty for life on the bike and you get 2free fall(October-February) tuning. This place is a hit or miss with the staff( I took a star for this) .. they are all knowledgeable but some of them are rude as hell. It makes you wonder they are giving you the bike for free. And some of them are really friendly I've had both experiences and the first time I really wanted to call the management to deal with one of the salesmen . But, the second time I got someone else who didn't leave me until he made me try more than 3 bikes and made sure I'm comfortable with it. Long story short, I walked with a bike, lock and a helmet and I'm happy with my purchase!! read more
