This is a great bookstore I was thrilled to find in my new neighborhood! I was able to pick up a travel book for Montreal, find a title I had been looking for, and pick up a few gifts from new (to me) line of short books about different music albums. They have great cards too, nicely curated while still being able to find particular things and not overly trendy or gifty. The employees are very good at helping too! read more

Once you get a kindle you can skip the trips to Barnes And Noble, but nothing can replace the charm and personal attention of a local independent book shop. This place is a gift to the neighborhood. The people are super friendly, always have good recommendations, and even stock the 33 1/3 record nerd series. Their kids section is great. It's where I buy most of my gifts for my nieces and nephew. For years, Greenpoint didn't have a bookstore. If you wanted to pick up a book, you basically had to run into Union Square or take the G further into Brooklyn. Either way, it involved a subway trip, which was really inconvenient. Then, WORD moved into town. I cannot speak highly enough of it - it's a great little independent bookstore. Because it's not a huge store, it obviously doesn't have the selection that a Barnes and Noble would have, but WORD does have a nice variety, and if you happen to want a book that they don't have, they're happy to order it for you, and it usually arrives within a few days. They also have a lot of events and book clubs. I've never joined any of the book clubs, but I've been to many events there, and they were all a lot of fun and turned me onto books I really enjoyed but probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise. Really, really great store. I can't speak highly enough of it, and I hope they're around for many years to come. read more

One of my favorite bookshops in all the land! WORD is small and cozy without feeling claustrophobic, and they have a well-curated collection of books you might not be able to stumble upon anywhere else. The staff is rather incredible and can turn you onto books you've never heard of before (and my guess is you'll love them). The downstairs basement serves as a relaxing event space. Neat place! I'm so happy that two of my really good friends from Georgia live within blocks of this place--this means I can visit a lot. read more

WORD is a great little indie bookstore! I've been here for many of their rockin' author events and I am always impressed with how they utilize their space and how everyone feels right at home. The location is a bit inconvenient if you don't live in the 'hood, but I've commuted here from the city on a few occasions and it's always been worth it. When I rave about my neighborhood to people, I always throw in something about our perfect little bookstore. That would be WORD. It truly is the perfect indie bookstore, that seems like it belongs in Northampton, MA instead of NYC. Every time I go in I'm drawn to their aesthetically pleasing displays and always learn about a ton of books I'd never heard of but seem awesome. I met WORD today. I say met, because this place is alive. The store was quiet, but the shelves were whispering very loudly--calling out "You know you want to take me home" in bright clean bindings. This bookstore made me excited about books for the first time in maybe four years. I bought a book. I special ordered books. And when I asked for help, the service was incredibly helpful and courteous. She didn't even gloat when I asked about a book, that I couldn't find, and she pulled it from it's hiding place in one swift, hot second. Needless to say, I will be returning eagerly and often. read more

I LOVE WORD!!! I live a couple blocks from it and I go there at LEAST once a week after taking my brother to the playground across the street. They have lots of very unique books and stationery that aren't too expensive. The cashier is always very nice and friendly. There is also a great kids' section in the back. I love Word. It's cozy, welcoming, fresh, and perfectly stocked. They always have the book I'm looking for, and they always have at least three others that catch my eye on the way to the register. None of the riff raff you have to wade through at the Strand or B&N, just the good stuff. The owners and staff are lovely, and can always be counted on for a recommendation. The readings, clubs and events here are reliably great, and the large selection of autographed books is a very cool and unexpected bonus. Greenpointers know how lucky we are to have Word, and the denizens of other neighborhoods know that it's worth a short train ride to get here. read more

I'm usually about getting in and out of retail type places as quick as I can. WORD makes me linger. I am totally comfortable there. The staff - especially the owners - know their stuff. And they are patient, which is BIG when you have children. I took my son there to pick out books when he was learning to read and Christine was wonderful with him as he debated over his selection. It was such a memorable experience for him he still talks about her almost three years later. I can only imagine the trouble I could get in with WORD if I lived in the neighborhood and I wish I had something similar in New Jersey. read more

I had held a baby book shower in the event space downstairs. They had everything - tables, chairs, a podium, projector, and etc. The staff were super helpful and all the guests loved the idea of the shower being in an independent bookstore. It did get a little warm in the basement due to the number of people and lack of air, but the guests didn't notice. Very reasonable in price for booking and a very cool venue! read more

WORD is the represents why you shouldn't shop at corporate chain bookstores. Ask the workers a question about a book, and they will know the answer. ask them to recommend something, they will have a good one. Basically, they aren't just college kids clock watching typing things into a computer and generating your answer. they know books and they care that you know about them as well. They don't have everything you'll need, but request it and they will get it for you stat. I know i have. I am a big fan of this book store read more

word is the bookstore that i have yearned to live down the street from, that i have yearned to work in, that i have yearned to own, that i have yearned to live in constantly. i'm a huge, huge book geek and i've been meaning to get to this corner of greenpoint for a while and now that i've been to word, no other bookstore will do. i decided once and for all that despite the convenience and yes, money-saving that happens on amazon, i will no longer get my books from them. i want to support the hell out of word. like, constantly, forever. i dropped a clean 80 bucks on my first visit and i have a tricked out list for visit two. yes, i have to take a bus and a train to get there and walk along blustery franklin, but goddamnit, it is so worthwhile. wonderful selection, fantastically nice staff, delightful card selection-just ideal. go. now. read more

One of my favorite bookstores. Been here for readings and just browsing. Yesterday was a browsing (and get some warmth from the cold) sort of day but we all found lots to *almost* buy. (Main disincentive was that we had more walking to do and didn't want to be weighed down; we'll be back.) Also kudos for having a restroom for customers, something more stores should offer. Certainly it a more comfortable place to spend time and do some shopping. read more

Great selection that makes the most of its space. They had several books that I had been searching for by harder-to-find authors, and I had fun carefully scanning each shelf and discovering some interesting titles. I couldn't resist making a purchase and had to work to resist the urge to bankrupt myself here. The staff are very friendly but not imposing, and I enjoyed chatting about new reads with one of them, who also offered a couple of great suggestions. I plan to return. Also, they have book clubs!
