How do you discover a book without "opening" it . The woman was so rude , the book they sold didn't even have a barcode . I went here for a talk with Imbolo Mbue, the writer for Behold the Dreamers and it was amazing! The discussion was lively and there was so much learned about her process of writing. I think they offer talks with writers and you can buy a brand new autographed book as well for a fee. They have memberships that allow people to work in an inspired space. Obviously, they have great books by well known authors for sale. Will be back! This place is located near Atlantic Avenue train station.

The staff has great taste and the place has a super friendly vibe. Stumbled into Freebirds during an afternoon walk and was mesmerized by the floor to ceiling stacks and overall communal energy. After a little research, I found out Freebirds was opened by Samantha Citrin and Rachel London in 2004 and later sold to local resident, Peter Miller. Peter was very pleasant and looked like a modern day Hagrid behind his stack of books and vintage cash register. Finally, in addition to the community orientated events this little bookstore hosts, it is also home to NYC Books Through Bars - a Volenteer collective which sends free, donated books to the incarcerated. Will definitely be returning. Shop local! Let's keep these gems open.

When the other store didn't carry it (disappointing), I knew I would find it at Community Bookstore. They carry an excellent selection of new fiction, harder to find fiction, classics and everything In between. If you can't find what you are looking for, they will happily order the books for you for pick up and even delivery. They have an amazing author events which, I really enjoy. Books are a huge part of my life and I love to Community Bookstore.

We even ended up chatting about the latest season of the Bear, which made the visit feel really welcoming and personal. I actually walked out with a physical book, which is rare for me since I typically use the app Libby to read. I ended up picking up Yesteryear and the waitlist for this book on Libby is MONTHS. So I was happy to finally have a copy in my hands instead of waiting. The store has a cozy neighborhood feel, and it looks like they also have a little outdoor space, though I didn't get a chance to check it out. Definitely a great spot to support an independent bookstore and browse for your next read.

I grabbed a wine that the bar was offering that day as a special and sat inside by myself. Where I tell you that it was great to just see people come in and out and the bar remain busy. When I first discovered the Troubled Sleep bookstore, I was elated: any bookstore but especially a…read moreused bookstore opening - and just a few blocks away from where I live! - was great news. And I found a book I'd been craving - an out-of-print selection of DH Lawrence letters with an intro by Aldous Huxley. The place was cheery and inviting: I would at that point have said "Definitely 5 stars!" But then I heard that the owner is at least partially stocking his shelves by removing books from the local "little libraries" where people exchange books. These are meant to offer free books to passersby! They are NOT meant to be snatched up and sold at a profit! They are a beautiful example of people taking steps, however small, out of the business world. I will not return to Troubled Sleep unless I hear that the owner has sworn off this method of getting books for his store.
