Recently, I was there on a weekday afternoon - literally only one of two people in the store, the other being my friend - and we were looking at books, casually browsing, and chatting to one another at a quiet volume. The male staff members essentially stood up and asked us to stop talking or leave... so we left. I won't be back.

How do you discover a book without "opening" it . The woman was so rude , the book they sold didn't even have a barcode . The seller was even flustered when we said we didn't want it and wanted to donate it then and she almost would not take it at a new and USED bookstore. The staff unfriendly and unhelpful.

Love the curated sections like the one with BAM-recommended titles. They also bring new releases in at lightning speed. A few weeks ago, I came for Richard Scarry-themed Inciardi prints and a new book but stayed for the quaint yet busy atmosphere where turning every corner feels like uncovering a hidden literary world. The kids area in the back is ADORABLE and features a little reading cave. In love with the cookbooks and architectural books around there, too. I am an average breeder and I would much rather purchase books from independence store and from online. The store is a nice space aesthetically. There is also a coffee bar which is a good plus. An absolutely gorgeous local bookstore with great ambiance and character. Although they have an…read moreextensive inventory, Freebirds specializes in books related to NY history and culture. Stumbled into Freebirds during an afternoon walk and was mesmerized by the floor to ceiling stacks and overall communal energy. After a little research, I found out Freebirds was opened by Samantha Citrin and Rachel London in 2004 and later sold to local resident, Peter Miller. Peter was very pleasant and looked like a modern day Hagrid behind his stack of books and vintage cash register. Finally, in addition to the community orientated events this little bookstore hosts, it is also home to NYC Books Through Bars - a Volenteer collective which sends free, donated books to the incarcerated. Will definitely be returning. Shop local! Let's keep these gems open.

I attended this week a book club event there to discuss the novel, The Bluest Eye, with a woman-owned organization called Lit Club. As soon as I entered this place, I felt like I was in a Hallmark movie. I was cheerfully greeted by the barista/bartender and told to sit anywhere I'd like while waiting down the event to start. The front had the bar are and the back was where all the books were located. They had a great selection of wines, cocktails and beers. I decided to go with a glass of Hibiscus champagne. I went back to the bar for a caramel honey espresso towards the end of the event but they had turned off the espresso machine already because they were closing in 40 minutes. They also had ran out of pastries by that time. Surprisingly, it wasn't too loud with other patrons who were there hanging out while we had our book club session in the back. It definitely is a great venue for book events since the chairs were comfortable and it sets a vibe that makes you want to to explore the book world. I would definitely come back for another event but would also make sure to order cookies and coffee early in the evening.
