This is another one of those pubs that can be pretty tricky to get to if you don't have a car, though there does happen to be a ferry stop nearby (and a bus stop for a bus that seems to rarely run). Honestly, I wasn't really all that big a fan of this place, though that probably had a lot to do with it being a bit too fancy for my tastes. It's not so much a problem with the pub itself, and it did have some nice beers on tap, and a pretty decent beer garden as well, but it really isn't a place that I'd come back to. read more

Arrived for wife's birthday. Nice open decor, great view of city across the water. Plenty of choice on the menu, we decided to share some sliders. I have been visiting the Pier for over twenty years and it has always been amazing. However having just had my son's engagement party on the weekend, we couldn't have been happier. The Pier went the extra mile in an extremely difficult situation and our event turned out to be just so wonderful. Thank you to all the wonderful staff. We ordered the Pier's Ploughman's Lunch which was served on a board and included an Apple and Watercress Slaw, Gran Reserva Jamon, Huntsman's Terrine, aged cheddar, stilton, house pickled vegetables, soft egg, english cream, sourdough $26. Not bad but could have been so much better if a little more respect was paid to the jamon (7/10). The taste was fine but I am guessing it had been sliced days earlier as some was in clumps. The terrine was a bit tasteless like my grandmother's meat loaf (6/10). The pickles, cheeses, slaw and sourdough were excellent (9/10) and lifted the rest of the board. We also shared a bowl of the French fries $8 (7/10) which by the way went very well with the english cream as a dipping sauce. read more

They call themselves the gastropub of Woolwich and they have lived up to their name. The duck confit that I've ordered came in very tender and went well with the sauce. My friends seafood pasta came in al dente and very flavoursome. The great quality food justifies the higher than thy average pub prices. I agree with some of the other reviews written about this pub: They've got to have better service. Firstly you've gotta line up near a bar to get a food order. And then they give you a buzzer which sounded like it's gonna explode. Finally you'll have to go collect your food from the counter. In our case, we were sitting upstairs at the balcony, enjoying the views. Carrying two massive plates of food up steep stairs while balancing two drinks isn't for the faint hearted. The bar upstairs was unmanned hence we got to go downstairs again to get some water and serviettes too. I would come back again. But this time I'll probably sit downstairs near the kitchen. read more

I've always heard of the WPH as it's affectionately called or so I have deemed it to be, but never had a reason to go. I've always confused Woolwich with Greenwich and at first I was a little put off based on how far I'd have to travel, but don't let that hold you back. A friend visiting from London wanted somewhere with views to chill and catch up, I decided that I wasn't interested in the usual tourist trap-view reliant relics that most would automatically flock to and googled 'drinks with views' that's how I came across the WPH, having only been vaguely familiar with it from some article awhile ago published about serving scones at lunch time (which they still do). So off we went on our little adventure and we were pleasantly rewarded. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing, the lay out of the hotel is really well planned to make use of the not-so cliche views of the city and the glimpses of Cockatoo Island and the inner western harbour. The beer garden 'out the back' as a friend put it when I told him I had been was great on a summers evening to chill, catch up, drink and grab a bite to eat. All in all, a pleasant experience. I'd recommend anyone who wants a great Sunday afternoon session on a perfect Sydney summers day to check it out. This place is a semi-regular haunt of mine which is interesting as I only found it by checking for nearby restaurants on my GPS. The food here is far better calibre than your average pub. The other reviewer called it a gastropub which is quite accurate. Rather being a place to get blind drunk, this is more of a place to eat a good meal with a drink or 2. Anyways, the recent menu has gone upscale a bit and is a little more expensive than before, but it is all good. They also have a decent selection of amusingly named cocktails (like the Charlie Sheen or the Bollywood). I guess it really fits into the Hunters Hill mold of being a little rich and classy, but not really too urbane. The view of the city from this spot is also gorgeous. read more

I have been to a this place a couple times, both times to kill times for a wedding of friends in between the church and reception. This place is in a beautiful location and is close to some really popular churches for weddings. The first time I went here I remember it being pretty ordinary and honestly just a place to have a beer and wait out 3 hours or so. This time was no better. I ordered some pulled pork sliders $5 each.. And fat 3 times cooked fries $8-9..(man hand full) that's ok. I'm out I want to enjoy my food the money isn't everything as long as the food is good. Nope. The pork was slapped on a stale strange tasting bun, after one bite I was done. The chips we're chips nothing crazy just chips. No sauce. Have to ask at the window for that. Service.. Meh. Ordered 2 beers and a lemonade, after walking back to the table and tasting the lemonade found it was soda water. Walked back and waiting hmm about 10 minutes saying excuse me when there was a gap but no luck while everyone else pushed in front of me as well as being ignored by pretty much everyone. That was nice. Even friends I came with got drinks before me..TWICE. The staff were not overly rude but you could tell that they didn't want to be there. The way they took orders and handled customer complains, not even form me! If there were another weeding I was attending down the road and this place was recommended I would definitely pass. There are plenty of places 5 minutes further away that may be worth a look in. read more

As a local and having gone to the Woolwich for years, it is so disappointing that in the short time since it has changed hands, the quality of food, service, standards of cleanliness have all taken a massive dive. I used to reluctantly pay $40 for a pub steak, but before the current ownership, at least the quality and consistency was always high. These days it is entirely an epic fail.... Bathrooms with no soap, tables not cleared, food scraps all over the floor. Come on, this is basic stuff. Tonight I had a simple burger mostly to minimise risk! The bun was stale and the meat barely warm. Come back Anthony - at least you knew how to run a quality establishment. I'll seriously struggle to justify spending money here in future, unless something major happens... Doubtful. read more

WE LOVED THIS PLACE for our engagement party!!! Our guests and family were blown away by the stunning harbour views in the evening -time, the upstairs room was perfect for the number of guests we had (approx. 140-160, cocktail hour); and the staff here were so attentive and amazingly friendly -- everyone was fed delicious foods, no complaints! Kid friendly too! Wrap-around terrace was beautiful at night with the big-bulbed lights hanging overhead! We couldn't have asked for a better venue and all of our guests were stunned they had never been to this place before! DO IT, A MUST SEE! I hope you fall in love with it like I did! read more

Fine service, big helpings of food,nothing to complain about until I found a plastic wrapper in my soup. When I brought it back to the wait staff, they said they would call the manager, and did not even apologise, manager never came to say a thing. Everyone else's food was fine. The plastic in my soup was what ruined it for me, and even then no apology. read more

Well, on the good side, the food, when it arrived, was basic but correctly cooked. We were afraid that after waiting for over an hour for the first four main courses that they would be ruined. The fifth main took another quarter of an hour after that. This is after having to line up for 15 minutes to actually order the food. They apologized profusely, but two servings of garlic bread and some extra fries didn't really make up for it. We're certainly never going back. read more
