Sure, this is quite a popular beachside pub, but then again on those days in Sydney when the sun is out, and half of the city makes its way down to the limited number of beaches along the coast, it can certainly feel that, despite the size, it is actually a pretty small pub. Okay, the lounge area was rather quiet, which suited me fine, but the thing is that I do prefer the beer garden, and as it turns out, so does everybody else, which means that there can be a mad rush for available seats, and getting from one side to the other can be a challenge in and of itself. We came here on a sunny summer Sunday afternoon around 1pm and it was not packed. It only took a waiter about 2 mins to get us a table. You pay upfront at the cashier, get a beeper thing and get your food by the kitchen when it buzzes. The menu is extensive, with a wide range of choices. Food itself was pretty good. I had the fish N chips. I love how the fish fillets weren't over fried and the batter was light and crispy. They were stingy on the french fries portion (boo) I am giving 3 star instead of a 4 is because of what they charge for the portion size. read more

Been here a few times - on Saturday for lunch, on a Saturday night, on a Sunday night and on Anzac Day. Overall this place is pretty cool and the vibe is usually good. The crowd is usually a pretty good mix, but also can be a bit dodgy at times. You just never know. But for the most part, I've had fun every time I've come here. The beer gardens is a nice chill place to hang out and have drinks. The music inside is good and the food is tasty. Some of the servers are a bit snooty, especially when ordering food, but overall its a cool spot to hang out and have drinks. It's open pretty late and the bar is stocked with Rekorderlig cider, which I love. read more

This is such a great spot to grab some beers and food either between dips in the ocean or before/after the beach. It provides a massive patio for large or small groups to sit, drink, eat and chat. I just had the most fantastic salad at the Coogee Bay Hotel. I love beetroot in any shape or form and am a huge fan therefore of baked beetroot, so when I saw on the menu Beetroot and Goats Cheese Salad, there was no reason to read further. The salad also had roast pumpkin, I love any salad with pumpkin and it had baby spinach and walnut praline. It was amazing, so delicious, I would have liked it more with chicken maybe, but I am not complaining as it was one of the best salads I can remember having in a long time, I can't stop thinking about it, my mouth is watering right now. read more

After walking from Bondi to Coogee Beach, I was in need of some refreshment. Choices within view included: a raucous, trendy beach club already packed with loud, early drinkers; or a couple of fast food spots; or an upscale, pretentious-looking cafe. Or...uhm...is that a Biergarten I see?!? OK, it wasn't labeled as such, but that's what it was: a large, shady courtyard, full of tables covered by umbrellas. Not too crowded; a relaxed vibe, with backpackers, tourists and locals bumping elbows. Classic and alternative rock played on the speakers. The place was clean and tidy without veering too far into upscale land. The only thing missing from my adopted biergarten label was the German beer part. No dice there. Instead I opted for a Aussie pale ale called 'Fat Yak.' For food I wanted to keep it light, so I ordered the salt and pepper squid appetizer. It was ready very quickly and was quite excellent; a delicious compliment to the beer. I enjoyed the increasingly sunny afternoon, sipped and ate slowly, and enjoyed a bit more of my book. The CBHB made for an ideal "halfway point" break on my walk before heading back north to Bondi. If I were to make the same trek again, it would be hard to convince me to go elsewhere. read more

The go-to bar for all the study abroad students in the Coogee Beach area, and a crap ton of other travelers and locals mixed together here. Beers were good and cheap compared to other places in Sydney (and even New York). I remember paying only $5.80 for a schooner of VB and $16-$18 per pitcher. There was usually a live cover band on Thursday-Saturday nights and they were all on point. Lots of Mumford & Sons and Oasis, among other classics. The vibe was rowdy and at the very least, a decent time was had. The fact the beach is right across the street is a big selling point. Their beer garden was also huge and an good place to get together. Even in the colder months, every seating area had heating lamps so you can hang out outdoors all year round. The bartenders there were very attentive. This was also a great place to catch whatever sports were on TV and they were very accommodating with requests to show certain games. They showed March Madness games (Go 'Cuse!) and a lot of the NBA playoffs. I think my favorite event I watched here was the Champions League Final in 2011 between Barcelona and Manchester United. Was really weird that I had to get fingerprinted when I went at night, but pretty painless. Wonder what kind of stuff happened to make them install that. If I ever go back to Sydney, I'll be sure to stop off here for old times sake, the beers and the garden are calling me! read more

If you're just figuring out the Sydney nightlife scene, then this is the lowest common denominator to measure all else by. It's filled with labourers playing pool and yelling, swearing and fighting. It reminds me of some type of old bar style bar in the middle of the country where manners & good people aren't welcome. Although the bar is lacklustre and inherently worrying, the food is somewhat surprisingly good, and the outdoor beer garden is one of the largest in Sydney - could be really nice for a warm summer day. I really can't see any other positive things about this bar, apart from the drinks as they can be very reasonable, unfortunately once you're plastered enough, you really wouldn't want to have a conversation, or let along dance with the majority of other customers there. read more

I have been here a lots of times. Super location at the beach where you can get cold drink after baking yourself near the water. The place is always busy and have a good vibe specially on sunny Sundays. I had food here few times and always was tasty . The beer garden is usually packed so come earlier if you want to get a table. In the evening you can come across a live band music and dance to your way to finish off the weekend. This is the spot to grab acouple of beers at the beach!! Its just across the street from the beach! Awesome set up!!! The Outdoor patio is where we spent a couple of afternoons drinking and hangign out with family and friends! They have a good thin crust pizza! and a good selection of Aussie beers! Overpriced menu for the quality it offers. No pride is taken in the venue, alot of the furniture needs to be replaced and or repainted as it looks quite unappealing and disoriented. Trip hazards are abundant with the over hanging garden features. Management are quite condescending towards customer opinions with phrases such as "How can I make this any simpler for you" and "You have no idea what you're talking about" (seems as though I wasn't wrong if you had actually cared to see what consumers said about your venue). Just an FYI, not having a review tab on your Facebook page creates a slight distrust. read more

The outdoor beer garden is a great venue and after a day at the beach, it's a nice way to cool off. They also have this guy cooking hot dogs outside, I think maybe only on weekends and they are the best things ever. I am glad I don't live that close because I would get them as often as I could. read more

Really delicious fish and chips - the fish was cooked to perfection and their house made tartar sauce was yum (usually I don't like it). After a week in Sydney with poor service and surprisingly bad impression I found this place. And it saved my whole Sydney experience. Good service and at least one bartender with a great beer brain that introduced the differences between the beers from Oz. Go here on a sunny day. :-) read more
