La Grillade Restaurant - 36hr Marylands lamb shoulder

They called the day of my reservation around 1pm to confirm with me that I'd still be making it but later called at 6pm saying unfortunately the lamb shoulder would not be available. Not happy Jan! On the bright side though at least I was still told before getting there. Rescheduled for the following week and with some luck the lamb shoulder was in stock! FOOD Complimentary bread and a shot glass of soup coupled with pieces of soft blue cheese. I wish that shot glass had been a bowl of soup and blue cheese. First entree was the Grilled scallops served with fresh truffle ($26.50). Extra $10 for the few shaves of truffle but so worth it! The velouté sauce accompanying the scallops was phenomenal. Second entree was the Twice baked spanner crab soufflé ($17.50). Whilst the soufflé was soft and fluffy in terms of flavour it was definitely overshadowed by the scallops. After the entrees the monster dish I'd been waiting for was served. The 36hr Marylands lamb shoulder to share ($69) is a must to try if you come to La Grillade. The lamb is so soft and tender it falls off the bone. This is quite a fatty part of the lamb which means its juicy and oh so flavoursome. There is so much meat my sweet tooth needs to have a rest and pass on dessert. OVERALL I loved everything about this place. The food, the setting, the fireplace which creates a warm intimate atmosphere. It made me forget about all my initial annoyances which is what all great restaurants do!

The word institution is bandied about far too often these days (Starbucks is not an institution, children), but La Grillade is fer damn sure an institution in these here parts. The food was rich and wonderfully done: chilli salt and pepper calamari and duck pate with port wine jelly and salted crispbread to start, leading into amazing mains of pork belly with a veal wine reduction - a superb texture combination of white meat, salty fat, and chewy, caramelised crackling - and pan-seared Atlantic salmon which was simply faultless. Dessert was vanilla bean pannacotta with a berry coulis and pear stewed in wine with vanilla ice cream. There could have been more ice cream but really, with the amount of food we ate, any more would have been gluttonous. So I guess it was just right. This was one of those meals had me wishing I'd worn elastic pants. And had one of those sticks with the two ceramic fingers on the end to purge gloriously, like a Roman emperor might.

The outdoors particularly offers a variety of seating arrangements - patio style stone circle table, black lounge chairs, pub garden benches, café style - there's probably a spot to suit every mood or need. Free wifi available which makes it great for casual business meetings, those staying in the hotel or freelances needing a 'third' place to work. Prices are not cheap but not over the top either.I had a Caesar salad with chicken for $20. The portion was small but enough for lunch and the chicken was quality breast chicken. I was satisfied but wasn't exceptional. My dining partners had burgers - fresh buns, perfectly cooked chicken ($15) and Wagyu beef ($15). For the gluten intolerant there are gluten free pizza bases available and the salads of course but no GF bread. My pick for desert is the Hazelnut and Nougat Ice Cream Terrine with fresh strawberries ($12). Toilets are clean, stylish but dark. High chairs for kids and despite being a pub if you sit outside on quiet day it the garden area is quite a good place to take kids. No grass mind you. Wine starts at $6/glass and goes up to $285 for a bottle of Dom Perignon Vintage.

Menu looked fantastic and I can't stop thinking about it, so I made a reservation. Since my favourite French restaurant closed last year, I've been on the lookout for a new favourite, this could be it. A glass of sparkling on arrival and a friendly smile, enough to make a great first impression before our amuse bouche arrived, Escargot with Garlic & Parsley Butter. Definitely a great start! We didn't have to wait long before the first course arrived, Sydney Rock Oysters with Sauce Mignonette. Vinegar with mince eschallots made great accompaniment to the freshly shucked oysters. Black Truffle & Mushroom Veloute with Crumbed Quail Egg is creamy and earthy with perfectly cooked crumbed quail egg added necessary texture to the dish. Pan Fried Pancetta Rolled Scallop with Foie Gras, Fennel Remoulade, Lemon & Lime Vinaigrette was excellent. This was my favourite dish of the night. It was sublime. Everything on the plate complemented each other and the foie gras added complexity to the dish. Kimchi, Tofu, Ham Hock Terrine with Apple, Ssamjang Chutney, Sesame Leaf & Nashi Pear Walnut Salad was fresh and a great follow up after a heavy meal, a palate cleanser before our next heavy meal. But the highlight and my husband's favourite dish of the night was Grilled Eye Fillet of Beef with Basil Pistou & Jus. Perfectly seared sous vide beef so tender it felt like butter when you cut through it. It left an impression on my husband so big he seriously contemplating on buying a sous vide machine to try and recreate it. Just when we thought they can't go any better than this, desserts came. I had the Passionfruit and Plum Creme Brulée with its perfectly cracked caramelised sugar topping added extra crunch. I can't really taste the plum though, but found generous amount of Passionfruit inside the Brulée. My husband chose the Apple Tarte Tatin, Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream & Salted Crumbed and I can tell you he kept telling how happy he was that he chose it for his dessert. The proof is in the pudding, or in this case the Tarte Tatin as he scraped clean his plate within minutes of consuming it. Great timing on the delivery for each course. The matching wines I had with my meals were greatly matched. All that combined with intimate ambience and friendly staff definitely completed a pleasant dining experience.

Everyone else had no complaints with there dishes WE didn't try any desserts The Set menu is $60 for 3 courses, the zomato menu is outdated. But from this you will only save $4 or $5, In general I found the prices a little expensive Service was attentive and friendly though food took a little longer to come out than expected Despite the price it's a place I would come back to try something else. Worth trying!

We rolled in here on a voucher but were prepared to pay extra on pre dinner drinks and coffee as our three course meal was discounted. We were able choose off the menu and the specials without any limit too. There was a feeling that this voucher was an advertisement for what they could offer rather than half serves. However, that being said, the portions are the usual French serves but you still don't go home hungry. The service was excellent from the bar to the table. There is a bar for pre dinner drinks and cocktails. I liked "The Last Word" cocktail. Complimentary bread and butter to start after we chose our entree and main. Snails did not come in the shell so there was no extra implements needed, and they were very nice. The French onion soup suited my dining buddy too. Our mains of Duck a l'orange and steak were excellent. The ratatouille was oddly salty and we probably shouldn't have ordered it anyway. Dessert was off the menu and on a trolly so we were spoilt for choice there too. Not a fan of the coffee but I did order a macchiato and that brings out a multitude of sins that cappuccinos hide. The little chocolates that came with the coffee were very nice. There were a few people eating there and it seemed that some are regular customers. The loos were in keeping with the decor too but are hidden behind mirrors so you might need guidance when you want to wash your hands. You are in a club so you will need to produce some identification (driver's licence) before you can go through to the restaurant. There is plenty of off street parking. It is recommended to use the multi storey cark park but we used the ground level parking as it was very well lit.
