The woods Lodge is a slice of heaven! Patty and John who run the Lodge are personable and great people. the cabins have everything you need for a get away from home. This year our adult children and grand daughters came up to visit and loved it. The views are forever and the trails are great for a short or long hike and fish. While we were here we were lucky to have seen two bears getting ready to fatten up for the winter. We will be back again next year and hopefully the lodge stays open later into October. I will never come back to Woods lake to rent a boat. I am currently sitting across from the boat rental and they won't rent to us. We have cash, we are the appropriate age, and we are sober. The "gentleman" that runs the rentals was rude beyond compare. There are too many other lakes here to fish. We will NEVER be back. read more

Loved the location on Lake George, but not quite what I expected. Didn't know when I booked that I'd have to clean the whole place when done. I agree with the reviews that if you're looking for the Four Seasons, this isn't this place for you. However, if you are looking to wake up every morning to the sound of the water rushing down the mountain, a view of the beautiful pines and a few chirps of birds, this is THE place. I'm not a huge fan of camping but I love the mountains so this is a great place to feel close to nature with the luxury of a hot shower and kitchen. I'm only giving it 4 stars because it really is very, very, very dated and gaps in the screen were fixed with duct tape! (it didn't cause us any problems, but just the reasons why I gave it 4 stars). That being said it is clean and just a wonderful location. Pack a few necessities that you would use in the kitchen : sponge, oil, seasonings, paper towels, oh and BBQ tongs if you plan of grilling on the weber grill outside (charcoal provided)... Kitchen, like noted in other reviews, is eclectic, but it does have pretty much all the necessities, stove top, oven, even a coffee maker and toaster. No TV so perfect for catching up on all your reading and you can borrow board games at the office. read more

My wife and I have been staying here for over 2 decades. If you are desirous of luxury rooms with all manner of electronic conveniences and distractions (tv, wifi, phone, etc), this is not for you. If, however, you are desirous of jaw-dropping surroundings, quiet lodging, brilliant night skies, crystal clean air and water, and an altogether wonderful vibe, then this is for you. I have nothing but fond memories of these idyllic grounds. Stan, the owner and manager, is a great guy to chat with and is super knowledgeable about the region. Since Lake George/Wood's Lodge is situated at ~9,000 feet (ASL), I typically use Wood's Lodge as a staging area to acclimate at moderate altitudes in preparation for higher altitude mountaineering and fast-trekking adventures (Mt Whitney in 1 day, Mt Kilimanjaro, Grand Canyon traverse, Machu Picchu trekking, Half Dome in 1 day, Mt Rainier, Mt Shasta, Italian Dolomites, etc). One is even close to the "Dragon's Back" trail that tops out on Mammoth Mountain's summit; great training in steep scrambling. After about 10 days to 2 weeks, you'll be ready to tackle just about any mid to high altitude adventure. Oh yes; there are bears. Just use your head and don't leave out food or food scraps. Remember, we're visitors in their home as well as all other species in the forest. Show some respect and reverence. Leave no trace. read more

Woods Lodge and its cabins are simply the BEST for people wanting to be close to outdoor activities in Mammoth. There are NO cabins in Mammoth that have better views than here. The woman who rated it a 1 seems to be a city girl hoping to find a 5 star luxury hotel in the forest. Doesn't happen, girl. If you want that, stay in the actual town of Mammoth at a resort. These cabins are older and rustic, but still fully functional. They serve as a nice place to stay between hikes, fishing and TONS of other outdoor activities. The linens are older, but definitely clean. There will be wildlife visiting the cabin area, but that adds to the awesomeness. You are not going to see deer, scrub jays, squirrels and even bears in town, only when you get up in the mountains. So, for people fond of the outdoors and ok with no room service and pampering, these cabins are for you. If you want those services, stay in town.. the rest of us won't miss you and your mercedes alarm going off in the morning. No need to lock your cars at these cabins. read more

I found Woods Lodge as a back-up because the original cabin I wanted on Lake Mary was unavailable. And I've never been more delighted. First, get your expectations in order. This is a Lodge with old cabins; it's not the Four Seasons. The cabins are perfect mountain cabins, with pine walls, and old but comfy furniture. Kitchen was completely functional, with everything we needed for cooking indoors or out for any meal. The hosts are extremely accomodating, even moving us from our original cabin upon request to one that better suited a family of four. The location is incredible, you can't believe the views, the fishing, the access to hiking trails and more. I wish I would have found this place years ago. And I will be going back regularly. Honestly, I shouldn't even tell you all about this place cuz I want to keep it to myself. But when I saw the two 1-star reviews I had to say something. The Woods Lodge is my new favorite place - and I've travelled extensively. read more

Don't Come Here If You Like Good Customer Service And Fishing Where do I begin... I called and made reservation for four days and they had openings and at that moment I considered myself very lucky. However, now sitting here writing this review I now know it had little to due with my luck and everything to do with the fires in the Mammoth area during the last of the month of July 2018. However at the time I made the reservations I was told that the smoke was extremely minimal at The Woods Lodge and that fishing was very good, so what more could I ask for... The Fishing: 2 days into my stay I had not gotten a single bite and I was perplexed as I was told by The Woods Lodge front desk that fishing was very good. So I decided to make a trip to one of the hatchery's and found out the stocking of lakes and streams had been severly scaled back since 2015 due a to parasite referred to as "Whirling disease" This disease was caused by Myxobolus cerebralis, a protozoan parasite that destroys cartilage in the vertebral column of trout and salmon. It is fatal or disfiguring to infected trout and salmon but does not affect humans. Fish infected with whirling disease are safe for human consumption... Even though it was safe for human consumption I was not too eager to try some of these infected fish for myself. Fortunately I did not have to worry about catching any fish as I was told by hatchery staff that stocking the lakes had dropped from 500 lb. to 100 lb. per delivery. Now consider the thousands of anglers on the lakes, streams and rivers in Mammoth along with 1/5 the supply of stocked fish... I would wager the only fish being cooked around the evening campfire would more likely be coming from the local VONS supermarket then from anglers. At the end of our third day of fishing and our stay cut short due to severe smoke I had only heard of a single bite and a single 1 lb. trout caught fly fishing. The Cabins: Let me start with the general overall condition of The Woods Lodge cabins. First off I get that mountain get-aways have the rustic look that goes with the whole ambience of cabins in the woods overlooking a lake, however these cabins were rustic in the sense that they didn't look like they had been properly maintained in over 20 years. The issues ranged from cracks in the linoleum flooring big enough to trip over to showers that were perfect if you were four feet tall. Then there were the smaller things like the water diffuser missing on the kitchen sink faucet which made the water spray out at various angles and door keys that were bent to the point of almost being unusable. Also I think it needs to be mentioned that according to my wife, she suspected the linens on the bed had not been updated since the 1970's as well as the bed itself we suspected was from the same era as it had a very well defined slouch in the center which made me very glad we took a plentiful supply of Motrin cometh the morning light. The Trails: Routes leading to the cabins definitely had something to be desired as they were badly in need of landscaping and maintenance due to years of erosion. I have a 4X4 truck... without it, it could've been interesting making our way around where the cabins were located. so if you had less than a 4X4 car/truck you would have wanted to be extra careful navigating the terrain. The Refund Policy: On the day prior to the last day of our stay we were forced to leave due to heavy smoke inhalation from the fires in the area which was now a health issue. During the 7 1/2 hour trip home, I called and left a message requesting a refund for the last day as the smoke was so severe I was awoken due to my sinuses being plugged with black soot about 4:00 AM. When it comes to their refund policy, its important to mention the only type of payments they accept is cash or check. Something else I found interesting is the is the person who returned my call from The Woods Lodge, explained his only task that day was to call every person that requested a refund and let them know under no circumstances would they get a refund because if they did give a refund for something like too much smoke in the air causing health issues, they would go out of business. I also told this person I would be writing this review that could be a BIG negative impact against their business and he had no issue with it. Great way to conduct business. The Conclusion: The way a business handles their customers in good and bad times defines them as a company as well as a good indicator of how long they will remain in business. By what I witnessed and experienced in the short time I used the services of "The Woods Lodge" by Lake George in Mammoth Mountains, I definitely predict "Under New Management" is the only sign that will change the direction this Lodge is going down. And shame on the tackle shops, lodges and resorts for making exaggerated claims about the status of fishing in Mammoth Mountains. read more

I have been staying at Woods Lodge for 30 years, and consider it my home away from home. The cabins are charming, clean, and quaint. The views are spectacular. Fishing and hikes are literally right out the front door. The linens are clean, and the bedspreads are laundered after each guest leaves. The lodge has been family-owned since the 50s, and is run with care and love. If you are looking for a rustic getaway, this is the perfect place for you. If you are looking to be pampered, consider staying elsewhere. read more

Stayed for a week...was ready to go home the first night. Cabins are OLDDDDDDD and poorly maintained. Our cabin had a gas leak the whole time --so it pretty much reaked ALL the time. The mattresses are sunken in and in such horrible shape. Thank god we brought our own linens, otherwise I would have gone home the first night. Beyond all the superfical stuff, the trek to the lake was dangerous and time consuming. And YES there were actual bears---we saw one break down the slider to get into the main lodge--fun times!! Last year while hiking I saw the Woods Lodge cabins and thought they must have a great view. I talked to Stan and he showed me unit 20. I walked onto the deck and said, "I'll book it." The view is dynamite. I'd say the best view you can rent in the eastern sierra. You look right out over Lake George and Crystal Crag. Patty and Stan could not have been nicer to us. It's sad that a reviewer would give it only one star. Wood's Lodge is not the Hyatt Regency, but one should know when booking there that it is a rustic mountain lodge. The unit was clean, the bed was not "sunken in" and the linens and towels were fresh and clean. The "trek to the lake" was about sixty feet on a trail. Yes, there are bears around Mammoth. It is bear country. We are in their territory. The staff warned us about leaving food out and doors locked. I love the Hyatt Regency and Ritz Carlson, but I also love the rustic, comfortable and laid back Woods Lodge. Oh, well. Enough comments about people reviewing places. Yes, I would, and will, stay there again. I recommend it to people looking for a time for hiking and fishing, not people looking for room service, pool and restaurant. read more

I've been coming to Woods Lodge for the past 8 years and look forward to my week in paradise every year. Woods Lodge is family-owned and has been for 50 years, and that says a lot in this economy. You cannot beat the view and the proximity to Lake George and to many beautiful hiking trails. Fishing, boating, hiking, relaxing.... everything is right there. The cabins are comfortable and feel like home - I'd recommend my favorite cabin but they all have amazing views and their own strengths, plus if I told you my favorite cabin you might book it and then I'd have to pick another one!! Yes, there are bears - it IS up in the mountains so if you're expecting the middle of New York City with no wildlife, you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a wonderful cabin that feels like home (but better) and amazing views and lots to do in the great outdoors, this is the place. read more

Stayed one night in the studio, attached to the main lodge, overlooking the lake. Stupendous view, from the deck, the lake, the stars, all too beautiful. The place is very clean and Patty the manager is wonderful. The mattress in the studio was not comfortable, though. No fireplace in that one. Other cabins are bigger and have fireplaces and more rooms. A quiet serene setting on Lake George in the woods in the Eastern Sierra Mountains. I think this is perfection. Not fancy, better than camping, not as posh as a hotel. Better than a condo because you really feel the outdoors, the feeling is exhilarating. Hikes all around, trolley to town is close by, Mammoth is close and has a lot of music and theatre going on. Rent a kayak, a canoe, fishing boat and catch trout and cook it on your deck. My family has been going here for 32 years this summer. Obviously, we love it. This is the most beautiful and relaxing vacation you will ever have -- if you are looking for the following: completely unplugging from daily life, no TV, no newspapers, no internet, reading several books in a week, taking several stunning hikes out your backdoor, being about 15 minutes out of town, playing cards and monopoly and charades at night, drinking wine on the deck at sunset, cooking for your family and eating all your meals outside (if you choose), and really connecting with your family and loved ones. Over the years we have stayed in a variety of cabins and come at different times in the summer, but we now rent cabin #7 for 2 weeks in August. We consider cabin 7 to have the best view of any cabin as it is a completely unobstructed view of Lake George and Crystal Crag from the highest altitude on the property. We may upgrade to a 3 bedroom as the family grows with all the grandkids though. Yes, as others have said, the cabins are very rustic and not luxuriously appointed at all. They are designed to have the basics -- clean bathrooms, beds, couches, tables and chairs, and basic kitchen equipment. My mom always jokes that it is only a few notches above camping. Yes, the cabins are old. Yes, the furniture is usually very old and ugly. But, who cares? The person going to Woods Lodge wants quiet, stunning beauty all around, and time to reconnect with themselves and their families. For me, our trip is something I look forward to all year and if I miss a summer at Woods Lodge I don't feel like myself. read more

We just came home from our best family vacation ever. Lake George is beautiful...the view from our Woods Lodge deck was incredible. These are rustic cabins with no frills. The cabins aren't fancy but compliment the environment you're in...the Inyo National Forest and bear country. We had deer and a coyote at our doorstep. We taught our kids to fish, went on hikes, spent the evening being together as a family (with teenagers!) and enjoyed being in a very comfortable cabin. We plan to go again and again. A wonderful place, friendly people. gorgeous lake, incredible scenery, away from the busyness of town but still accessible, and the best hikes ever. Woods Lodge is a very special place. I saw photos of Lake George and knew we had to stay at Woods Lodge. I don't want to say to much here because I want them to have a cabin available for me to book for our future visits. The location and views are amazing. You can hear and see the waterfall. Great hiking trails start right here. Yes, the cabins are rustic and simple but they are also very charming and historic. This place is from the 20th and we felt like we vacationed like our grand parents. We loved it. No TV and other stuff you don't need when surrounded by such majestic natural beauty. But our little Alpine cabin had everything needed comfortable bed and a amazing view from our little living room and patio. Everything was very clean and our dog loved it as well. If you have to have luxury and technology go somewhere else. But if you want to be surrounded by amazing alpine scenery and feel some California history this is the place. Woods Lodge is a home away from home. Our family has been going there for over 30 years. Some families have kept their week reservation at Woods Lodge for several generations. There are very few places that are as special. If it were a luxury hotel it could never be in the location it is. At 9,000 feet the High Sierras are at your doorstep. The cabins are not fancy but they are well cared for, super clean with well stocked kitchens. I think the cabins provide a better experience than the lodge, but the views from the lodge are superb. This year will mark my 6th year stay at this Lodge. If you want a condo experience with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, please by all means go elsewhere. This amazing corner of the world in not for you. I have stayed all over the world in plush to quaint to rustic accommodations and the most memorable are those that linger in the imagination long after you leave and that is Woods Lodge. The scenery, the hiking, the air and the intense colors remain. Sure the cabins are old but the beds are good, the linen is clean and the staff extremely friendly. There is a reason why they don't have pictures of the cabins on the internet... no one would ever rent them. Stayed for a week and we too were ready to turn around and leave as soon as we opened the door. We had to keep our food in the cooler overnight until the fridge got cold enough, thank god we had enough ice to last. I too detected a smell of gas! The cabins are falling apart!! Literally!! Holes in the bathroom floor/wall where any nice largespider/critter could get in. The ceiling in the bathroom looked like it may come down at any time. The entire cabin shakes when a large wind comes up... would not want to be here in a storm!! No deadbolts on the doors so don't bring anything you don't want stolen. Owner and Staff will come into your cabin at will ... not too comfortable with that either. Had to light the stove with a match - thankfully I was prepared and brought some. Don't plan on microwaving any food. - no microwave. There were hardly any dishes as well.. had to use our McDonalds cups for morning coffee since the mugs were miniature in size.. no bowls for cereal - had to go buy some. The furniture was literally from the 70's and so uncomfortable you could not even sit in it... thankfully we brought our own chairs for fishing and had to use them the entire time. The futon in the front room ( if you want to call it that) was so used you slid off it... no where to sit!! Extremely over priced as well... for what we spent we could have rented a really NICE two bedroom condo! If they would simply put a small amount of $ into the cabin and do some maintenance it could be a really nice place! I don't mind rustic but this was WAY beyond rustic... maybe the other cabins were nicer?? We stayed in #2! Never again!! The only thing that was good about this place was the location to the lake - so since our main reason for staying there was to fish.... we made the most of it ...but won't be back. I too spoke with someone that has been going there for over 30 years... other than the location - I just don't see the draw! read more
