Stopped by Wolsen Caffè this evening and it honestly feels like a hidden gem in Sunny Isles. Service was excellent--quick, very polite, and genuinely welcoming. You can tell they care about the experience. But the real standout is the Portobello burger. Instead of a traditional bun, they use Portobello mushrooms, and paired with a glass of wine, it's easily one of the most delicious things I've had in a long time. I've been here twice and taken back by the potential this place has. First of all, "no work zone".. a cozy, empty cafe that does not allow laptops- have you heard of such a thing? I can't understand the logic and would think it would help a business. Wouldn't a more reasonable approach be to limit time guests are allowed to stay or to put a minimum spend if the concern is loitering? Maybe While also reinforcing loud conversations or cell phone use isn't allowed? Perhaps there's something I'm missing here. Besides that, both meals I've had here were meh. The service was non existent and cold, dismissive. I don't believe the server, a woman, spoke a word to me. I walked in, she came over and gave me a menu. I flagged her over to place my order, still no words, and had to flag her over to ask for water. The meek portion of soup was bland with an over powerful taste of cilantro with an unbalanced taste of quinoa with a few shreds of chicken. Upon finishing the soup, she cleared table, without words, didn't ask if I wanted anything else nor provided the check and my water was empty. I stayed awhile, wondered if I'd get a check or there was something else I was expected to do which I figured out after the man at another table went to the desk to pay. Being a local, I'd love to enjoy this experience but I'm not sure how this place keeps its doors open if this is what the experience is like. Their sandwiches looked really good but we didn't try them as we just went here for coffee. The regular cappuccino was delicious. The iced cappuccino I would not recommend. I moved to Sunny Isles Beach last year and have been exploring the many wonderful restaurants and shops around town. I wanted to have coffee at a new place and read mixed reviews about Wolsen Caffe and decided to try it myself. This was my first time visiting this place and likely it will be the last. As I sat my backpack down on one of the many vacant tables, I approached the service counter. A lone server came from behind the kitchen door without a greeting and, with his mouth still half full of food told me that I can't use this restaurant as a work station. I said I would like to order a latte, and he said I can't use this place as my workspace. I couldn't believe this first impression! So, without a smile I only replied " just a latte". I paid, did not get a Thank You or a smile or anything but my change. I will not be back to this very unwelcoming establishment regardless of all the positive reviews of the food. Message for the business owner: Please hire new stuff for this place, it's dying! The guy who is the only waiter there never smiles and is extremely slow. I stopped in before work for a quick breakfast it was prime time 10:00 AM and the place was empty while the Starbucks next door had 100 people. With the menu being that great you can't have slow and soulless service like that. When I approached the bar to inquire about breakfast toasts he told me they only service customers from the table. What a control freak lol. Another time I stopped by with a friend and we had a laptop and he told us we couldn't use laptop inside! There's a sign in the restaurant that says all you need is love and a good cup of tea so I expected full tea, service teapot, looseleaf, tea high-quality, and the server brought over a big cup of hot water and a teabag when I asked for a pot he said a pot is $15 and a cup is eight dollars Which offensive he tried to explain that the tea was a high-quality tea which was decent quality. It was Harney and sons. I ordered a grilled steak salad and my husband ordered a chicken wing lunch. The food was good. The ambience is very nice it's very calm. Relaxed there's jazz music playing. There's nice leather chairs with low top tables, I don't know if I have to come back, not blown away by anything, and what kind of turned me off was the whole incident. Cute cafe for some healthy breakfast and tasty coffee. My friend suggested this place for the comfortable and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, along with great food. We arrived around 10am on a Friday and there were only a few people finishing up. We ordered some coffee, which was delicious, and took our time chatting before ordering our meal. Unfortunately, it got really busy when we wanted to order and the server, who was working alone was clearly getting stressed out as she was running. I felt bad having to ask a few times for the water she had forgotten to bring and it took a bit to get our orders in when we were ready. After we ordered our food did come out quicker than I expected. We both opted for a benedict, mine was Catch the Benedict with smoked salmon and my friend had Mr. Benedict with turkey bacon. Friday night was one of those, thanks to Libna's UYE at Wolsen. Located in Sunny Isles (a Russian enclave in Miami), Wolsen is a great spot for dinner with friends of wine and comfort classics. For the first time ever, I arrived before everyone else and was starving so I ordered their Mama's soup, a light yet flavorful broth of chicken, cilantro and quinoa (Tsyplenok, kinza i kvinoa). It was at the bar that I recognized the Russian accent and between what I know from self study and Google translate attempted to work my language skills. By then the rest of moi druz'ya arrived, and we sat down for dinner proper. The manager was super pleasant even in rearranging tables 2 times as more people arrived. I was ochen' goloden (that's very hungry) and while all the plates looked delicious I ordered their Burgerliscious Burger. This is a big juicy piece of meat, lathered with rich cheese and an added sweetness from the caramelized tomatoes. Sides were about 6 thick cut, rosemary and truffle flavored fries. I tried it with hot sauce, and chert poberiii.. Yeah I needed soda right that minute :) My dessert was a just crispy strudel with plenty of apple stuffing, a side of strawberry ice cream and chocolate drizzle. A great closing..Vkusno (that's delicious in Russian)! Oh, and did I mention it is pet friendly? While we were dining, one of the other customers had his french bulldog there. They have 10% off available for you when you check in on Yelp, and given how much we loved the food, we entirely forgot and didn't mind paying regular price. That in itself should give you a clue as to the quality of this place. Now first thing's first. My friend, Libna F., found this gem ages ago and hasn't stopped raving about it with good reason. She recently set up an outing for a group of us (yours truly included), and so, we met up Friday night to enjoy Wolsen Caffe and its delights. Now, walking in, I was hands on happy I was wearing jeans for once. It was freezing! Fortunately for me, with food, good company, and what I genuinely think is the air conditioner getting warmer, I slowly and surely was enamored. This location is in a plaza and there is plenty of parking. A bit hidden and out of my way, I definitely wouldn't have heard of this treasure had it not been for my friend, so thank you bunches, lovely lady! That said, my friend had made the reservation and they attended over ten of us with one or two waiters, which I must say was an impressive feat all in itself. I am not sure how busy this place gets, but it was clear from our outing that they definitely have had some expertise dealing with large groups. Anyway, we ordered some Merlot and it was sweet, albeit somewhat tart, just the way I like it. Ordered a bowl of Mama's soup, consisting of chicken and cilantro. Delicious. Admittedly I may have preferred my boyfriend's soup: the elf soup, consisting of broccoli cream. I then had That Chicken, while my boyfriend had Cow In the Barn (or at least that's what I think he got; I know he had steak and it was yummy). My chicken was heavenly, the accompanying sides of cherry tomatoes and mashed potatoes perfectly cooked and seasoned. I did have to stop eating though because I went with the purpose of drinking coffee. That and I wanted dessert. The desserts are made in house. My boyfriend had a chocolate lava cake, while I ordered the apple strudel with chocolate ice cream and it was the perfect way to end the night. Or was that the coffee? I had a cappuccino and I couldn't stop drinking it. Just wonderful. Something to note, too, is that the staff is very friendly, helpful, and willing to give recommendations/make accommodations. I had a friend who had the same strudel I had except it was with strawberry ice cream. Or was it cherry? Who knows, but that was pretty awesome. Oh, and that's without mentioning the ambiance. It's a calm and soothing one, even at the toilet. Only one bathroom, but the bathroom wreaks of intelligence. There were books and cleanliness all around. Absolutely smitten with the food, the culture, the overall feel. That's saying something, too, as the food is organic and I tend to stay away from that cuisine, usually finding it lacking flavor. Not the case this time though. Who knew organic food could be so tasty? Sigh - what a shame that this café is so far from me. I would definitely frequent it if I were in the area. Extremely friendly wait staff, plentiful indoor and outdoor seating, and cultured industrial indoor decor make an extremely enjoyable dining experience. My partner visited on a Friday afternoon for brunch and we're immediately seated and provided menus. They have a nice diverse food options that range from traditional american brunch (omlettes, benedicts, sausage and eggs), as well as delicious burger options. Their hidden gem is their dessert menu, which is later and presented to the extravagant extent nearing an entree. My partner and I got burgers, I got the fish (salmon) and he got the turkey. It was clear everything, including the buns, were made fresh. Served in this beautiful wooden platter, plentiful serving of home fries and mayo kept our hungry bellies satisfied. They make their strudels from scratch and the waiter generously explained that this tends to take a lengthy process (20 minutes). However, he excellently timed it so the strudel came out nearly just when we finished eating the burgers. And oh boy did it blow us away. Perfectly crispy, lightly dressed in a milk chocolate drizzle, filled with your choice of fruit (apple, cherry or pear, we chose cherry with no regrets) and paired with a refreshing scoop of vanilla ice cream. I'm a picky organic a-hole, I actually bring my own organic ketchup bottle to "fast" food restaurants. The other Russian loved her Omelette. The Russians surprised me with two candle lit brownie sundays, I didn't expect this but it was much appreciated. The sundays were absolutely delicious, they didn't taste like diabetes bombs, I could actually taste and enjoy the delicious chocolaty flavor and the cold soothing vanilla ice cream interior of the brownie. I blew out the candles and wished for... not telling lol. I absolutely love this place, I'm going to make it one of my regular spots.
