My dad was craving sandwiches for a quick lunch so I thought it was finally time to check out Winton Deli. This deli is hidden in the industrial part of Hayward so it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. It looks like their main customer base would be people who work around here anyways. Tip for anyone who uses google maps to get here from Hesperian: you don't have to go around all the lefts/rights they tell you. Just keep going down Winton until you eventually turn left into the lot. The deli itself is super spacious. There's a coffee counter in the middle but it wasn't open when I stopped by around lunch and truthfully, it looks like it hasn't been open in a long time. There's tons of inside seating for anyone who might want to dine-in. You'll order at one "window" then pay at the end of the counter and you can pick up a drink and chips on the way. The menu is displayed behind the counter, but it was sort of hard to read (and kinda dirty). They also have a menu printed out at the register. I went with the Southwestern Chipotle Pesto Chicken (chicken breast, melted provolone, tomato, lettuce) and I got it on a dutch crunch instead of the sourdough roll. It was a good sandwich with fresh flavor, though I wasn't really getting much pesto or much chipotle. I also wish there was more meat... or at least more evenly distributed meat. As far as portions go, this isn't the biggest sandwich. It was enough to be satisfied, though, so maybe that's all you need! Prices are not too bad at about $8-9 per sandwich. Love this place! Been here three days in a row. I'm lucky because it is on the way to work. Skip the terrible breakfast at the hotel, and stop here for anything on the menu. My first time I had the Del Mar Veggie Sandwich; avocado, cucumber, cream cheese, sprouts, tomato, onions, on sliced wheat. Still my favorite sandwich. Second time I had the Pesto Veggie Sandwich; pesto sauce, fresh spinach, avocado, tomato, provolone cheese, Hold the Mayo on toasted sour four. Came here with a colleague for a quick bite as it is the go to place for sandwiches. The Del Mar and Santa Cruz sandwiches are delicious. The bread is extremely soft to where it almost melts as you take a bite. The veggies are fresh and the Tri Tip Sandwich on Thursday's are supposed to be amazing. The side pickle is also packed with flavor...can it be bigger? I do wish they served the sandwiches on paper plates instead of the to go plastic containers. Seems like so much waste. But I did see an employee taking them out of the recycling bin. Let's just hope he was taking them out to make more room and not to wash and reuse them. read more

I really enjoy their daily specials! It is something different everyday. Me and my fellow coworkers loooove their chicken ensenada! Literally that's all we always order from there when we are in the mood for a sandwich. Also, our whole facility is in looove with their chili, we always make sure we all get extra onions and cheese. But it wasn't the deli it was more about my taste buds. I went to this place and it is in an industrial area...but it got such wonderful reviews I had to try it. I return to this deli time after time. Why? Because of the ease and non-drama that usually occurs there while attempting to obtain the mid-day sando. This place does get busy right before 12 Noon for a straight hour. No lie! Their prices are reasonable, and the staff is quick and efficient in their ability to rip through the orders. They seldom get backed up with too many orders, which might happen at other venues during the mid-day crush of hangry customers. Not here. Their sandwich game is really strong. Exceptionally fresh sandwich rolls. Generous toppings with sensible amounts of slathered condiments applied. I usually just order the standards: Roast Beef, Turkey, etc. My fav however is their Poorboy. Delish! They have a vast selection of specials too. They offer enough of a selection that their customers can walk in and get something different which might tickle the taste buds almost every time. So today I went on yelp and ordered, which is always easy and convenient to do; I, too, ordered the veggie pesto. This is what I consider the far side of Hayward. During lunch time instead of eating like I should have I had to go deliver something to someone on the outskirts of Hayward. Once my emergency delivery was complete I left the "looking up of food choices" up to the Ol' GPS System. The first thing to pop up was the Winton Deli, and I said F-it, lets go. Its located in a business park of box type warehouse businesses. Not where you would exactly expect a deli to be located. Walking in the first thing I noticed was how exceptionally clean it was in there. I could have eaten off the floor and had less germs in me than I did before. That's how clean it is in here. Two guys were working behind the counter and one was mopping an already spotless floor. I walked up and read the menu while the guys just stared at me. I settled on The Reuben, only to find they were out of Rye Bread. I had them make it on a soft roll instead. They make the sandwich right there but kind of under a counter so you cant see exactly what their doing. It took a minute for it to be done. I got it to go and it was wrapped on one of those Styrofoam trays that meat comes on in the super market. It was nice and warm like a Reuben should be. When I got to my car and started devouring it I noticed it wasn't exactly what I look for in a Reuben but it was hitting the spot. There was a weird sauce on it that I cant explain. If I was stuck out in the nowheresville of Hayward again I would definitely come back and try one of the their other sandwich options. read more

First off, I agree with most of the more recent reviews. I do believe Winton Deli is improving and shows a lot of effort, which is why I'm choosing to write this review. I also work close by and come here when I'm pressed for time. For the sandwiches, the Turkey Delight is a standard. The Chicken Pesto was also very tasty! However, this morning I craved a breakfast burrito and debated between the "roach coach" or the deli. Since the sandwiches have been good, I tried the deli. I ordered their breakfast burrito, but substituted the ham or sausage for bacon, no hot sauce. It definitely was not what I expected. I'm grateful they didn't just throw a strip of bacon in the mix, they actually chopped it up. The tortilla was definitely soft and good (probably the best part of the order), but the salsa was not the greatest (tasted on the sour side) and the egg was a little undercooked. I do understand the price was only $3.99, but I've never had a burrito this small, except for the frozen ones you buy at the grocery store. I'll continue to support Winton Deli for their sandwiches, but it's a no go on breakfast burritos. read more

I should've asked what came on the sandwiches b/c I don't like mustard & whoops, my club came w/ mayo & mustard... The owner was so kind to make it right & fix it, even though it was my fault to not ask for mustard. That's above & beyond, if u ask me. I ordered the Club Sandwich for $6.99 and what I got was 1 slice of Turkey, 1 slice of ham, and 1 slice of bacon on bread that was even cheaper than wonderbread. This place gets an A+ for presentation! Ordered online through the Yelp app just a Reuben sandwich after reading other reviews about how good it was. I must admit, the sandwich is really good, but I have a few suggestions. First off, there was not enough dressing, needed just a little more and it could have been warmer. That being said, the togo presentation was perfect, kept the bread nice and toasted so it didn't get soggy. Also, all of the ingredients were not over done, which is a high potential of a Reuben sandwich, so that was great, didn't have kraut falling out all over the place. I go to this deli often since I work at one of the neighboring business, like most of the people that eat here. Their staff usually consists of 3-4 people that make the sandwiches and 1 person to ring up the orders. The sandwiches usually only take a few minutes to make so by the time you get to the cashier, your sandwich will be ready to take. The deli is kept pretty clean and there are plenty of table to choose from. There are occasionally a few boxes stored in the former bar area and the television is in need of being updated, but the deli is still in good shape. read more

The food was good, but the customer service was lacking. The first time I ordered I asked for pepperoncinis on my sandwich. When I picked up my phone order I saw the pepperoncinis were there but whole on the side. The next time I ordered I asked them to cut them up and put them on the sandwich. I was told that they would do it this time because they weren't too busy.
