Tankless water heater gas venting.
Randy F.

I interviewed five plumbing companies before selecting Winters Plumbing. When you choose a company to work for you, it should be no different than candidates interviewing for jobs. I treat each company that comes out with respect; we discuss the various aspects of the job and how the job will be performed. Ultimately, we end up in salary (project cost) discussions. COMMUNICATION Winters Plumbing is a fantastic experience end-to-end. I used the Yelp projects system, and communication with Winters Plumbing was incredibly responsive. Yelp was not the only communication system; we chatted via phone and text. Never a delay. I worked with both Steve and Brittany. Their communication skills are excellent. JOB REQUIREMENTS 1. Replace a Bradford 50g water heater (leaking from the top) 2. Replace a Kenmore water softener that was 15 years old. I didn't realize these should be replaced every ten years due to the resin in the tank (look it up). 3. Fix a 40' run of 2.5" kitchen sink pipe detached from the ceiling due to the strap cables, held in by nails, used by the original installers. It wasn't draining anymore and was full of gunk. ITEMS INSTALLED 1. Tankless Navien 240A2 gas water heater, which required outside venting. 2. Watco 2P150MPRO water softener. 3. 40' run of 2.5" PVC replacing all straps with j-hooks and 2x4 bracing. In short, the house will have to cave into the basement before the new pipe comes down. 4. Condensation neutralizer for the tankless water heater. This is good for the environment and drastically lowers the acidity of water emptied into the drains. TECHNICAL INTERACTIONS I'm an incredibly technical person and engineer. I research everything from plumbing, electrical, carpet, etc. I like to know how things are installed and how they work for the simple fact of educating myself to get the best use out of everything. Steve and his team answered every question, and I never felt disrespected. While Steve has an opinion on specific equipment, which people should have, he walked me through the "whys" of arriving at his conclusion. Steve's approach demonstrated his openness to educating others and learning himself. We enjoyed talking about the various plumbing systems' ins and outs. INSTALLATION DAY Donny and Daniel were the installers. I was sure the job would last two days with the required work, and they just kept working and working through installation day. They worked until at least 6:30 pm. I'm sure I told them repeatedly, "You're welcome to come back tomorrow; no rush." They were determined to see the job through to completion within the day. As they worked, I always had a question here and there; they took the time to answer every one of them; I had a great time learning, and they appeared to enjoy the conversation. Additionally, I have two dogs, and a job that lasts all day means the dogs will be around the house. At one point, Daniel looked over at Charlie, our Shepherd lounging around on the floor watching them work, and said, "Charlie, get a paw in here and help us out." We all laughed. PRICE Winters price is incredibly competitive. There are a couple of things I look at: 1. How much am I paying for parts? 2. How much am I paying for labor? Parts are a commodity. You can find every price for every item online. I'm not a fan of companies who mark up their prices. I have to pay sales tax on parts, and every dollar added is more money out of my pocket on taxes. Labor is a professional skill; you don't have to pay sales tax. That saves you money. I'm happy to pay more for labor rates while saving money on commodity-priced parts. The job will be the same, but the taxes will be different. I found Winters to be very competitive in both price and labor. Smaller companies have some advantages in having fewer systems and staff to manage operations. This helps keep costs down. OVERALL I have a new plumber that I'll use for several years. The best deal is someone you trust who falls into your affordability category. Winters Plumbing fits into each of these categories. I couldn't be happier. FINAL NOTES Why a tankless water heater? While they are more expensive than the tanks, the federal government and my energy company provide rebates. That lowered the cost significantly; not cheaper than a 50g tank, but I'll certainly never have to work about leaks again. Yay.

Unfortunately, that's where the professionalism ended and the upselling began. Within minutes of looking at my system, the tech told me confidently that I "definitely" needed an entirely new well pump. Price tag? $5,000. No discussion of alternatives. No troubleshooting. No checking the simple, inexpensive components first. They skipped straight to the most extreme and most profitable recommendation. Thankfully, I trusted my instincts and got a second opinion. The truth? My pump was perfectly fine. I didn't need a $5,000 replacement. I didn't even need a $500 repair. Or even a $50 repair. The real issue was a simple electrical problem that the power company fixed for free!!! and at most I needed a basic pressure switch replacement--something this tech should have checked first. But it gets better (or worse, depending on how you look at it). After I declined the wildly unnecessary replacement, the technician began calling and texting me about how his assessment was 100% correct and to chew me out for a negative review. The pressure to approve the job or his bad assessment bordered on harassment. Completely unacceptable and wildly unprofessional. So here's my honest summary: If you want a company that diagnoses correctly, looks for honest solutions, or respects your boundaries, look elsewhere. My experience was a textbook example of why homeowners lose trust in service providers. Strongly do not recommend! Carter's definitely NOT my plumber.

There were no other plumbers available in a reasonable time frame and the house was unlivable until the work was completed. The personnel on site demanded immediate payment before they left the property without allowing time for the work to be inspected or sending a detailed invoice. Edit: Thank you for the reply, the review stands as written. There were three estimates. The second was verbally approved. The third reflecting the price increase was received by the homeowner sometime after crews were at the house performing work. The 15' of pipe outside the home was excavated prior to your arrival. There was no need for heavy equipment for the few additional inches of soil removal required when the original pipe was pulled. The initial excavation took less than 1 hour by hand. We were told your workmen would "need several hours to fill the excavation" without using heavy equipment (despite you being asked to leave the excavation open). I would suggest you hire workers who know how to use a shovel or listen to the requests of the homeowners. Yes, there were shoddy plumbing repairs under the home done by a previous owner that will be addressed in time. The immediate job did not require changes to those areas. As far as communication, the individual who phoned multiple times during the workday was more concerned with expressing his opinion than listening. All in all, this was a frustrating experience and we will not be repeating this mistake. By the way, it pays to be suspect of any company with only 5 star online reviews.

Early the next morning, I had a message from Adam B. Once I got to work, I returned the call and quickly described my issue and what I believed it to be. The first available appointment wasn't until Monday (it wasn't urgent, so I wasn't worried about going the weekend). I got my timeframe. I had a couple other appointments that day, so I ended up taking the day off so I could easily be available. I immediately liked that they told me who would be arriving - AND that was who arrived. I also liked that they use a customer portal that allows you to have some security if you pay online or to review your records. Christian arrived (there was one other person with him). It took him a couple minutes to diagnose the issue he believed it to be, and it took him not a lot longer to determine that diagnosis correct. He quoted the price, I agreed, and he got to work. After finishing the work, he determined the original issue I'd believed it to be wasn't quite needing to be addressed (but will be in the near future). We discussed options, including ways I could save a bit. Christian was personable and explained things in a way I could understand. The issue was likely caused by me, but he managed to avoid using the word "idiot" at any point. The repair was done in a timely manner. The price ended up being a bit lower than quoted. I appreciated his honesty as he very easily could have pointed me toward a repair not needing done yet. It also became obvious the last person I'd used had really only done half the job. Everything has worked beautifully since Christian finished. There are likely a couple more projects I'll tackle in the near future, and I won't hesitate to return to Grateful Plumber. The housecall was $59, but that was credited toward the repair once I decided to have them do the work. Friendly employees. Good follow-through. Fair pricing. Quality work. Problem solved. That's 5-star for me and another winner for Yelp's project feature.

The furnace tech diagnosed the furnace as needing at least a new control board and couldn't be sure other parts weren't bad. The furnace was full of ice. This time around, I've gotten the chance to try out Chapman to address some electrical issues in the house. Truthfully, I wasn't aware that Chapman handled electrical. I'd begun having some significant electrical issues a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. I called another company that I'd used for a smaller project with good results. They came over and did some minor adjustments, however, they noted there were significant issues and planned to send me an estimate. They did let me know this "fix" was more like a band-aid and the significant work was inevitable. It was less than a day when the "band-aid" stopped working. I waited a bit anticipating their estimate, though also disappointed that they'd done such a weak fix. Finally, things got WAY worse. It was shortly before Thanksgiving and the situation was urgent. I left a message for Chapman anticipating that I was likely out of luck for the holiday weekend. My general sense was that was their plan, too. However, I think the rep (I believe her name was Hannah) heard the panic in my voice and I explained my situation. She arranged for a technician to visit the house the next day. This tech did agree that the issue was serious and warranted a few major repairs. He explained it well and explained my options. To be honest, I'm usually quite cheap. However, when he gave me two options I went with the more expensive option as I really wanted to make sure the fix was done properly. I was tired of band-aids. They used my initial service call as a down payment and the electrician, Rodney as I recall, scheduled it and made sure he would be the electrician for the project (NOTE: In reality, this ended up being a 2-3 person job). The only slight hiccup was that I'd been told they'd arrive at 8am. In reality, I called them at 10am and learned they were having trouble finding one needed part. That was fine, though I should have been called. Around 11:15, and somewhat surprisingly, they arrived and dug in. Seven hours later? They were done. I was particularly touched by a neat gesture - I'm a wheelchair user. In their estimate, the electrician had written that he'd be putting my new panel in at wheelchair height. This wasn't something I asked for particularly, however, it was a pretty cool gesture recognizing my needs. Rodney explained everything and was entirely work focused. He completed the work as promised and the cost was exactly as quoted. He explained a couple other concerns - including one that wouldn't be a Chapman issue, however, he explained how it could impact the electric. I've now had Chapman work on my furnace and my electric. Are they more expensive? Yeah, I'd say so. If you're looking for a budget electrician, Chapman probably isn't that. However, in all three visits the work has been done and done well. They've avoided band-aids and actually fixed issues. Their quotes have been accurate. The employees have been professional. With the exception of today's tardiness, the experiences have all been impeccable. Truthfully, I should have likely called Chapman first. While I may not call them for smaller issues, the truth is for me it's worth a bit more to get the work done right. The work is warrantied and I now have a system that should last for years and is also accessible. That other company? I still don't have their estimate. Chapman wins.
