I ordered the egg drop soup and the pu pu tray and let me tell you this is quite literally THE worst Chinese place I have EVER been to the soup was absolutely horrendous. Giant chunks of egg and the consistency was very thick and unpleasant. To top it off the chip topping that was given with the soup was STALE. Like a week old stale it was disgusting. The tray wasn't any better the egg rolls were soggy, the meat tasted terrible. And the service was terrible as well I told the lady at the front counter to have a good day and she gave me a dirty look. Seriously guys it's not hard to be respectful to customers. I love this restaurant. I readily admit I am picky about Chinese food, so Wing Lee was a very welcome surprise. I love spicy food and Wing Lee's Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken With Garlic Sauce are the perfect options for lunch or dinner. I usually get carry-out, but I have had a chance to look at the buffet and it is packed with delicious options. The crab rangoon is also excellent, and the egg rolls are flavorful and filling. If you are looking for an affordable and delicious option for Chinese in Independence, Wing Lee is absolutely the best. I have tried other local restaurants and none of them come close in terms of freshness, flavor and friendliness of the staff. One warning: Wing Lee is closed on Tuesday, so plan around this minor inconvenience :) read more

This is a small family owned place that is dated inside and out. First impression might cause you to think it's a little sketchy. I have been multiple times, and every time the food on the buffet is really fresh and hot. The quality is surprisingly good. It does seem to have less flavoring and spice than some other Chinese places, but if you like less spice this may be your perfect spot There are not a lot of options on the buffet, but when the food is prepared continually in small portions so it stays fresh it didn't bother me not having more choices. Since it's close and convenient I will continue to go. If I was not close, I probably would never go out of my way to eat here. read more

This is hands down the best Chinese spot in the KC metro area period. This is a hidden gem in east independence, staff very friendly atmosphere is good seating is limited. The food here is very consistent as well as the service. You will not find better Chinese food in the metro area, selection on buffet isn't the biggest but what food they do have it's the best around. Prices are very competitive and it's really worth the money you will spend. The general Taos chicken the beef and broccoli the Teriyaki chicken the Crab Rangoon's there fried rice the lo mien noodles all taste amazing. We have ordered here in the past and it has always been great. Tonight we ordered again and it was terrible. We spent $84 and got portions that were less than half of what we're used to. I asked for green peppers and onions to be added to my sweet and sour chicken, but they weren't. My wife's shrimp dish was missing rice, I guess they forgot to include it? 2 years ago I would highly recommend this place, but now, I give it a 0/10. $85 later and my family is not satisfied. read more

Trash. Ordered online from menufy but no delivery, for 2 hours Called the store and they said " it's on way" and hung up on me. Terrible service. Menufy said they couldn't track order either. Both the restaurant and the order service are terrible. Makes me sad that the food was good, even mostly cold. read more

Husband and I went here for the first time tonight -- my sister and her husband have become semi-regulars and told us we HAD to try it. First off, it's CHEAP ($5.75 for lunch or $6.95 for dinner, $6.95 all day Sundays). It's just a little hole-in-the-wall-looking place, but as we walked in the door, we were greeted like family. This hostess/waitress kept our glasses full all night -- and with all the salt in Chinese food, it's nice to know you won't have to sit there, feeling parched, until someone notices your glass is empty. The food was fantastic. There were no super-special dishes on the buffet, mostly just the standards (although... butter chicken? HELLOOOOOO!!), but they were quite well executed. Most impressive of all was how fresh and hot the food stayed. It was really gorgeous; everything appeared to have JUST been cooked, and it tasted the same way. Green beans were crisp; egg drop soup was the best I've ever had; the crab rangoon was creamy and hot. (Egg rolls were just okay, but with so many other options, who needs fabulous egg rolls?) I noticed (but did not try) some kid- friendly options like chicken nuggets, fried potatoes, and breaded shrimp. Finished the meal with hand-scooped ice cream (there were six flavors to choose from) and a delightful peanut brittle-esque thing. We'll definitely be coming back here. Between food you can count on to be piping hot and fresh, and the excellent service, you just can't beat Wing Lee. EDIT: Prices have changed; I think it was $7.25 for dinner tonight (Sunday). I went here tonight based on the previous review. I was looking for a locally owned, out of the way, dive of a chinese place, something completely outside of my comfort zone. I found it! Came here with a friend, so it was a first time for both of us. I'm leary of buffets, but we decided to just go for it. We were impressed! The food was hot and fresh. The crab rangoon was crispy on the outside, warm and creamy on the inside. It was not a huge buffet, but had alittle bit of everything. We tried it all! The bill came to $16.95 (that includes the beverage-my friend had Coke, I had water). They kept the glasses full. It was WELL worth it. The dining area is small, but not cramped. It's very brighly lit, and it gave me the feel of being in a small town diner. A few booths, but mostly tables. There is NOTHING fancy about it, but with food this good, no one seems to notice or care. There were a few families with kids, so there's something for everyone. You can tell it's a neighborhood joint, and lucky for them (the neighborhood, that is!). Another couple came in and ordered the buffet to go, so you can get a to-go box and load it up! But be warned-they have a note on the wall stating that you will be charged additional if the box doesn't close! Don't be leary of going here! It's a hole in the wall, right off of 291. It's an old, tiny building, nothing fancy going on here. No frills, but excellent food, and an excellent price, and the staff is very friendly! read more

The large windows make a bright dining area. The buffet was small but sufficiently stocked. Our server didn't ignore us. Broccoli was crisp tender and the hot and sour soup was thin and mildly spicy. I've been eating here for years and years and can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. I absolutely love Wing Lee! The building is tiny and looks like an old house so it's really easy to overlook, but don't let that fool you. The food and service are both awesome. My mom usually orders carryout because she works nearby, but I prefer the buffet. I don't eat meat and still find plenty of foods to keep me full. It's definitely not Chinese, but they serve these really awesome fried potatoes that I love. The staff is friendly and really quick -- if I need a refill or if one of the foods is out, they fix it right away. There is a way to run a business successfully and they just get it. read more

Okay so the buffet is not that big but the quality of food here sure makes up for it. the food is always hot and freshly prepared. I will always go during peak hours as I always do for buffets so I'm not sure how the food is during 2 to 4 p.m. But I do know it's 6 o'clock during peak hours it is delicious stuff. This place is pretty good. They don't have a lot of food available but what they have is good. Their little strawberry dessert cakes are delicious and their string beans are great. The only thing I'd say they can work on is their white rice. They keep it in a rice steamer-type thing and it makes it dry out and get hard which is a shame because white rice is my favorite. read more

I live in the neighborhood, and this place is a frequent stop for my family. The staff are super friendly, and very attentive. The food is great, and the atmosphere is cozy. This is hands down my favorite place to eat. When I moved out of Independence I tried to replace my home Chinese restaurant however I kept finding myself returning to Wing Lees. There a very personal and the ownership as well as the service staff I know that everytime I go in I get a hug or at least a greeting and that may be a little bit too personal but I've been going there since 2005ish. I absolutely love the owner and staff and the food. The appearance is rough but if you can get past that you're in for a treat. read more

Oh, Wing Lee's how I miss thee. I used to frequent this place almost every weekend with a couple of friends. It is a chinese buffet, you get what you get. Nothing tasted bad, it was all enjoyable for me and my friends that went. Service was always good, food was always fresh. I will admit that this place holds more of a sentimental place in my heart because of the two buddies that I used to go with, it was our favorite! They are both out of state now and I have no real reason to venture out that way to get Wing Lee's. I think I may here pretty soon for old times sake. read more

I have gone here for years when the Chinese craving hits. So far is my favorite Chinese Buffet. Their food is consistently good and the Hot Sour Soup is the best I have ever had (I rank every other Hot Sour soup against this place). Sometimes I just order a large soup to go (great value). I love their egg rolls and my son thinks they have the best crab Ragon. Prices are low and while they don't have as much selection as other buffets, what they do offer is better that other places and is always fresh. Place is a bit of a dump but clean. The wait staff is a bit of an odd couple. They have a younger waitress that is awsome, so friendly and helpful. She is a joy to visit and makes everyone feel welcome and special. The older lady that runs the register is often rude and grumpy. I figured she must be the owner or related to the owner because why else would the owner would put up with her attitude. read more

When those two things are good there great! But when there bad it's disgusting the owner there isn't always pleasant so I usually have second thoughts about going there because she can be rude. Wouldn't eat there they found maggots in the food!! I ate there about 8 years ago thought the food was disgusting then!! Then a couple of weeks or so ago my neighbor and my wife saw I think was on Facebook or somewhere where they found maggots in the food!! After that I would never eat there again, if I was anybody!!! I had been going to this place for 24 years and in the past 10 years it has gone down hill. The last time there did it for me. I ordered shrimp fried rice and they reheated old rice and placed it on the table for pick up. I kept asking if that was my food and the waiters said "i too busy i don't know, i too busy!" By the time I asked again for the help, the food was mine on the table and it was cold and mushy. I requested for them to remake over and the lady gave me an attitude and kept trying to convince me that it was good and saying, "I make it warm for you, i make it warm" She took to the back and did exactly that...she put in microwave and brought back out warm and this time it was worse. The rice was mushy like sauce. It was gross. The lady was making an embarrassing scene, insisting it was good and i should take it and quit making trouble. I asked politely for my money back. She continued to fight with me. She made a bigger scene in front of the customers then. She said in a mad voice, " Fine, i give you money back!" Then she threw my money on the counter and slam the boxed food up against the wall by the trash can. I took my money and got or if that crazy place. I will never go back there again! read more
