I used to love going to their buffet before the pandemic. Their honey chicken is my absolute favorite.

One of my favorite spots me and the family hit it up all the time. Mama China is definitely one of the best places to visit as far as Chinese Buffets are concerned. The way I judge good Chinese buffets is a bit strange and some might say crazy but just go with it, it's good creamy crab rangoon. There is a reason behind this, its because that usually means the buffet is rolling fast enough for the food to stay fresh and it comes straight from the kitchen to the buffet after its finished. All the food is hot and served well, crunchy and crisp where it needs to be. With a wide selection of Egg Drop Soup and Spicy Sour Soup. To Dim Sum and Walnut Chicken (photo included) the selection is amazing and I suggest trying everything. Friendly staff has even started calling my mother Grandma because of my nephews coming in calling her that. For some reason that makes it better! Clean restaurant and bathrooms. I was shocked when I went in the bathroom because usually a place that small have cruddy little bathrooms but it was very nice and very clean. Buffet Price is about 8.50 per person at dinner. I'd go five stars if it were a little bigger and a little nicer, but its a great eat. read more

Wow, this place has really gone downhill. It used to be easily the best Chinese buffet in the Independence/Raytown area, with four buffet islands, a spacious dining area, and really yummy food. When I ate there with a friend on a Thursday evening I could hardly believe the change. The parking lot was jammed full, so I assumed the place was still doing a brisk business. The price, at $10.55 per person (which could have been the Senior price), was about what I remembered from before. The entry area had added a display of colorful lighted pictures of different Chinese dishes very common in food malls. It cheapened, rather than enhancing the appearance of the place. The dining area was half its former size, the buffet islands had shrunk to three, and the food was far from yummy. The vegetable egg foo yung was an unappetizing shade of gray, and its sauce, instead of the usual dark brown, was tan. I actually had to ask to make sure that's what it was. The skewered chicken, tiny spring rolls, and coconut shrimp were the best the buffet had to offer. My friend also enjoyed the salmon. The other offerings were mediocre at best, and some were questionable. The dessert table offered the usual selection of jello, fruit, pudding, pre-made mini cakes, tiny cream puffs, almond cookies, and ice cream. The peppermint ice cream was very good. By the time I dropped my friend off 30 minutes later, my stomach started to feel rumbly and unwell. This continued throughout the rest of the evening. When I awoke the next morning, I had to make haste to the bathroom. Needless to say, I won't be back to Mama China. read more

What can be better? My son took me to Mama China's, and paid for it. The crab rangoon, the walnut shrimp, and the sautéed green beans, that are fresh, not canned, all waiting to be devoured. Oh and, lo mein noodles, stuffed mushrooms, kun-pao chicken. I think the green beans and walnut shrimp are still my favorite. No, maybe the green beans, only are my favorite. But, wait, I love the honey chicken, and the cashew chicken also, with the baby corn. I always make sure to eat doubles (though I know I get too full doing this), and can't eat later. My iced tea was unlimited, and so was the soda. It was pretty crowded today, for a Saturday afternoon. Everything was fresh, and they put out fresh crab rangoon as I was going into the serving area. The crab rangoon so creamy without any chunks at all, melts in your mouth. They also replaced the green beans. I've said how much I love those green beans. I could make a meal out of the green beans alone. This is a place I suggest if you're in Raytown, to not miss. read more

I don't like this place. I used to work about 2 blocks away; lived 2 blocks away; my folks love this place; I think it's gross. We went again today (not my choice), Sunday 11 am, the food was fresh and the place was clean. We were swarmed by staff who remember my parents since they come here fairly often. Those are all good things, I just don't like the food much. Things here seem to sweet to me, I'm not sure what the deal is. I had decided today to stick to things like crab rangoon (my favorite thing ever), chicken on a stick, chicken wings...things without sauce because I always get grossed out by their stuff that has sauce. It was okay, but the crab rangoon is like eating a pack of philly cream cheese... I guess that could be a plus to some. Mama China's is a rare gem in an otherwise ordinary part of Raytown. Mama China's has the best customer service of any Chinese buffet I've dined at; their staff is extremely keen on refills. Your empty, dirty plate will never linger on your table for more than a few seconds. While they don't have the largest selection, the food they do serve is fresh and delicious. The tender sweet and sour shrimp and succulent crab ragoons are my favorite dishes. I always end my meal with a plate of tapioca pudding and honey dew melon. If you're in the Raytown area, you will be pleasantly surprised by MaMa China's. read more

Ordered Mama China for delivery and it was awful! Yes it was hot when I got it but it looked disgusting. I ordered shrimp lomein and chicken fried rice. The shrimp in the lomein looked old and tasted very rubbery! Gross! The fried rice in the chicken fried rice was not "fried" at all. One star because the staff was nice, but zero stars for everything else. It's just bad bad bad. All the food tasted alike- overcooked and caked in oil. Just nasty. Even the broccoli was gross. How do you mess up broccoli?! Slippery floors, dated decor, a weird rancid milk smell in part of the dining room, washcloths on the window sills- not a good sign. The place was packed, though. My cousin loves the buffet here but it continues to be a miss for me and this is my 3rd try. I ordered shrimp tempura and got torpedos... they were huge, hard breaded squares with an itty bitty shrimp inside. It was all dough! The shrimp and veggie dish was tasty, had crispy veggies (I like that) and the shrimp were a nice size. I could tell it was warmed in a microwave because half of it was cold and half was hot. This place is your above average Chinese buffet. We were there for dinner with my boyfriend and his dad. The place was not packed so it was nice to not wait in line. The food was actually pretty good! My favorite was the Lo-mein. Self control at those places is key!!!! The waitress was awesome. She kept coming around to fill out drinks and asked if we need anything Very passionate with customer service. The reason why I give it four stars is that 1. When you walk right in there was a table with employees cutting off and prepping green beans. Shouldn't you be doing that in the kitchen or at least the back of the place? 2. At the dessert station, there was a man who was scooping some ice cream and basically had his hand in the ice cream carton. Gross. This is a reason why I don't like buffets. Unfortunately the food at Mama China's has taken a serious turn for the worse. The last 3 or 4 occasions we have eaten there the food has been progressively worse. Our most recent time there we have decided will be our last. The General Tso's was so mealy I literally couldn't swallow it. I had to spit it out. The Chicken on a Stick was so overcooked it was dry as dust and the Chicken Fried Rice which use to be amazing was now completely flavorless. It was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. This from what was our favorite restaurant. I have been told that the cook for Mama China's left a while back. That I believe because the food got bad very quickly. Now we are looking to find a new Chinese food place in our area. Wish I could find out where their old cook went to. read more

Ma Ma China ALWAYS has cars in the parking lot and I have wondered why? This week I had occasion to find out. And now I understand why. I was with two of my teenage grand-kids and they were hungry! As in "Feed me...feed me now!" HUNGRY. They love Chinese food, as do I, and I happened to think of Ma Ma China on Raytown Road, not too far from where we were. It was after two:thirty on a Thursday afternoon and I wasn't sure whether there would be much on the buffet at that time of the day or whether it would be fresh. But the kids were up for trying it and I need not have worried. There were more than a dozen cars in the parking lot and the two steam tables were laden with plenty of fresh, tasty choices that were still being replenished as needed. There is also a chilling table for salads, fruit, dessert, etc. and, again, lots to choose from. Three unlimited, all you can eat buffets plus a pot of hot tea for me was under $22.00 (one can easily spend that amount at a fast food place for burgers, fries and drinks) and it was all good, solid, middle of the road Chinese. I personally had some Cashew Chicken, Broccoli & Beef, and a dish with Shrimp and Vegetables along with Fried Rice, a Spring Roll, a couple of Crab Rangoon, a stuffed mushroom and deep-fried mushrooms and a cup of egg drop soup with Wonton strips. I also had fresh fruit and chocolate pudding but was too full to get any of the ice cream that my grandson had, but his looked good. I love the serve yourself buffet because you can tailor serving sizes to suit your own appetite and even go back for seconds if something really appeals to your taste. The staff was very attentive, clearing our used plates quickly. And the restaurant space was clean, neat and cheerful. Now that I have been there once, I expect I will go again. And I better understand just why all those cars are always in the parking lot. read more

We've driven by here several times. My wife was a bit apprehensive in trying it out. She finally decided to go and off we went. We were shown to our seats and took to the buffet. There was a selection of much of what you'd expect if you've ever been to a Chinese buffet. Lots of chicken items, lots of veggies, lots of seafood. There were also lots of people. Very busy place. That also provides for a lot of turnover for food, so it stays pretty fresh. I don't eat much Chinese. My usual is a couple of teriyaki chicken on a stick, some white rice, and potatoes if they have them. Here, I also picked up some salmon, which was nice. They also had a honey chicken. I liked that. I also got some of the sweet and sour chicken without the sauce. Very good. My wife loves Chinese food. There was a walnut shrimp which had some coconut and pineapple flavor that she liked. She said the lo mein noodles were ok, but there was a bit of an odd flavor to them. The service was very business-like and efficient. Plates were swept and drinks were refilled quickly. The food was solid. The price was unbeatable. After getting similar meals at places like Joy Wok, this was significantly cheaper. We both drank water and got the buffet. Less than $20 for both of us together. Quite cost effective. A few tips, the place is quite busy, so the parking lot tends to be very full. We were lucky to get a spot up front, but it is fairly limited parking. Lots of people get the food take-out, so there is often many people at the buffet bars. Joy Wok does have a larger selection, as well as some American fare on their buffet bars. Ma Ma China is all Chinese and not nearly the selection. However, what they put out is of great quality and very tasty. We will be back, maybe for take-out. read more

OMG....I just had lunch there for the first time in years....and it hasn't changed a bit. It's still the bees knees ! Upon arriving and making the initial oink-out surveillance pass, I made my move. Green beans...check....mushrooms....check....lo mein and spring rolls and soup, Oh my ! The green beans are to die for. I decided on my return trip, I would just take my chair and my fork and plant myself in front of them. Screw everybody else. MINE ! No one else has green beans this good. Ma Ma China....why have we avoided you for so long. As most of your know food cravings can be cyclical. You go for a while in a general pattern, and we went for a long cycle of asian buffet cravings. We always hopped in the car, drove from South KC past Ma Ma China to East Buffet over near the former Blue Ridge Mall site. Little did we know that we were missing out. We just happened in today on a whim, and once we remembered that most Raytown restaurants (Cough, Cough) have smoking sections, we were all set! This buffet is in a very dull shopping center, but inside the energy is high and the vibe is right. You can see it all over the faces of happy diners. I knew we were in for something good when I saw who was eating there. When we pulled up there were at least three AT&T trucks in the parking lot, later inside, two priests showed up, the mail man eats there, do I need to go on?! This is one of the places to be in Raytown and we have been missing out. Everything on the buffet is hot and fresh, and plentiful. The restaurant was busy during lunch but their supply of every item remained in generous supply. They have all of the offerings you would expect of a good Asian buffet, plus I noticed that they spelled Buttered Crab Meat with a "C" and not a "K". A very good sign. I have to admit after seeing the reviews.. I thought for sure this place would be better than most Chinese restaurants. I'll be honest one thing I've learned when you see signs like "Top 100 best Chinese restaurant." It never ceases to majorly disappoint me. The food was super greasy, some very old from sitting for a long time which was hard to believe considering the ridiculous amount of people in this establishment. Noodles were bland, any of the specialty chicken was disgusting with breading that was mushy. The seasoning for general's chicken, sesame chicken was way off queue. Egg rolls & crab Rangoon were decent but how can you really go wrong there? My favorite thing about this entire experience was the option to sit in a smoking section. LOL! It is a buffet. So there. An Asian buffet. So what? Well, the only way to differentiate a buffet is but selection and quality. I did not find the quality to be as far above par as other reviewers. Perhaps the green beans are better prepared than some. The black pepper mushroom, walnut chicken, and a couple of different dishes like that give the extra star. The service is very quiet and attentive out front, and two guys were always working the chaffing dishes. I would go back here before just about any other Asian buffet in town. read more

They put too many things out on the buffet. No dishes stood out. Some of the things were overlooked. Some of the items were flavorless. Some of the dishes had a weird slimey texture. Came in for lunch recently. The place was busy and had a steady flow of people. The food here is decent but a few of the items are a bit average too bland for me. I guess you need to hit all kinds of taste buds on a buffet. The green beans and the non breaded chicken dishes were my favorites. There were very few beef and pork selections but those were decent as well. The fried shrimp was nearly all breading. The other fried selections like the egg rolls were mediocre. I will NOT be returning unless and until the BUFFET returns. I knew there was a reason I haven't been since the pandemic happened... the WHOLE SETUP is a mess now! They have it blocked off at the DOOR like a pick-up/ order window, but it's TIGHT and people can't read nor follow directions that say ONE PERSON AT A TIME! To make matters worse, the food wasn't good, they didn't follow my order directions and the lady was kind of rude. This experience was NOT worth the money and they'll only see me again if/when they have a buffet from this point on. Lesson learned. read more

We have ordered pickup several times and the food was good ordered delivery tonight. The food was warm, didn't taste good and I am pretty sure the order wasn't quite right. Ordered lo mein and got rice. Beef in the beef and broccoli didn't taste like beef and didn't have much flavor period. Soy sauce didn't even help.
