My boyfriend and I got a Groupon for a wine-making class at Wine & Whey and didn't really know what to expect. When we got there Friday night, we met the down-to-earth owners + their tiny, sweet dog & the rest of our group! Then, we got a ton of wine samples while chatting with the owners + our fun group! After sipping on some great wine made in-house for an hour or so - seriously, so much wine - we decided, as a group, what type of white wine & red wine we would make together. And then, we got started with pouring & stirring the ingredients - most everyone got a chance to do something! & when we were done, we sipped on some more wine and chatted some more. Now, we get to create our own label to put on our bottles and in a month or so, we'll be back at Wine & Whey to share a potluck with our group while bottling the wine! This is such a fun, social experience. I'm definitely interested in coming back for a cheese class! Came to Wine & Whey last night for a wine-making class. My sister-in-law gave me a Groupon for Christmas as a way to make new friends in Denver having recently moved here. I was a bit nervous because I was alone, but I ended up having a blast! First, you are greeted by THE CUTEST little dog, Zara. She was seriously so sweet and adorable. Every time the door chimed she'd jump up and excitedly run to say hello to the newest person. Everyone in the group was nice and we all had fun getting to try many different wines, and learning about the post-crushed-grape wine making process. I cannot say enough great things about the owners; a down to Earth, married couple who have a clear joy for teaching people new things. I was so impressed by the class (and surprised at how much I liked some of the wines), that I'm discussing with my fiancé to make our own wine for our November 2019 wedding! Even though the Groupon was an awesome gift to get, I would pay full price for these classes, and I definitely intend on checking out the cheese class. Looking for something unique and fun to do in Denver? Look no further than Wine & Whey! We came here from a Groupon that was offered and it was a great girls night out. We bought the mozzarella making class! They started the class with homemade bruschetta and locally made crackers. Then with a group of 14 of us they passed out at least 7 bottles of homemade wine to try! I think this gave it a wonderful personal touch. I loved the wine so I will definitely come back to try the wine making class. As we were waiting for others to arrive we started making homemade butter! It was a delight to pass that around the class and eat it while watching the cheese demonstration. The mozzarella making was more of a demonstration than actually creating it yourself. You get a few opportunities to come up to the front and stir the pot or separate out the mixture. I wish it was a little more hands on but I understand that somethings are time sensitive and you can't complain when you're noshing on some fun treats and sipping on wine. After it was all said and done they made us a beautiful caprese salad and sold little kits so that you can make the cheese and the butter at home. My girlfriend purchased a groupon for a cheese making class at Whine and Whey way back in July for my birthday. Unfortunately for us, but obviously good for them is that they sold a TON so we JUST got in for our class. It was worth the wait! The married duo who owns and runs the courses are very knowledgeable! Ok pros and cons: Pros: Lots of tasty food! Super sweet owners and dog. I kept telling my gf to put Zara in her purse, but she wouldn't do it. Basically unlimited wine... Cons: Their website is a POS. You don't actually make the cheese. The wine isn't good, but that's just my opinion. My gfs and I took the mozz class. We were greeted by the cutest little dog, Zara, when we came in... late. Woops! We started with delicious bruschetta and lots of wine (made from the wine making class). We then started making our own butter, which we all participated in and that was fun. The butter was effing delicious and we also tried the buttermilk which, if I could get my hands on mass quantities I'd start drinking dairy again. As mentioned above, I didn't dig the wine, it was super fruity for me, but again, that's just my palette. The class was more a demonstration, which I get, but I was also a bit disappointed that we weren't actually making the cheese ourselves. So we watched the cheese be made. We tried the mozz while still warm which was a bit odd and I didn't love the flavor. Then we tried it cooled in a fresh caprese salad which was so good! Everything is sold there for you to make your own butter and cheese. The kits allow for ample creation and is well worth the price. The owners were super friendly and we definitely had fun. They also gave me a gallon of whey for us and our chickens. Protein! Lol. Being likely entirely too reliant on computers and the interwebs, their web site is crap and they don't have their hours posted on the site. They're closed Mon and Tues btw. Calling them or emailing them is the best way to get a hold of them. If the calendar does manage to work for you, you can't buy tickets online and you don't know if any of the classes are sold out or not. Likely not a deal breaker for a lot of people, but I had to make my sadness known lol. This is definitely a great place for a date or a group outing. read more

Wine & Whey is way fun! I first heard of them through a really fun Yelp event a couple years ago, and have come back since. We did my birthday party here! It actually made a great venue for a party, because we basically had the entire place to ourselves; we brought our own hors d'ouvres to snack on and had a fantastic time hanging out. The main events were a wine-making lesson and a cheese-making lesson for our group. There were like 10 people there and each of us got to participate. The cheese-making was the best part, for sure. The woman who conducted the lesson was extremely knowledgeable, spoke super well, and overall was just a great teacher. The lesson was a great balance between demonstration and hands-on. Who knew that you can make mozzarella in the microwave! The initial wine-making was less fun than the cheese because it's just mixing together the pre-measured ingredients that come in the kit... But you have to keep in mind that the real wine-making work (fermenting) is happening while you're not there. Wine & Whey takes care of storing and racking it to secondary for you until it's time to to bottle. This makes the wine-making process so easy! We came back for a second afternoon a few months later and had a bottling party, which was also great fun. We brought snacks again and spent the afternoon at the venue's very fancy bottling machine. You can create your own label and bring an image file, and they will print the labels for you on location! The overall experience was not cheap, but when you have 10 people pitching in it becomes quite affordable. Everyone left with fresh, homemade cheese from the first event and several bottles of wine after the second. I still have a few bottles of our pinot noir left even now, and it is quite good! Overall it's not as complex and developed as some of the better commercially available brands, but it's also noticeably better than others! I have used it as a housewarming or hostess gift several times, and I have great pride that I "made" it myself. I highly recommend and would definitely do a group event here again. read more

I've now taken two cheese classes here and if you're serious about cooking or if you just want to have a fun afternoon and learn something new, this place has it going on. Since I love to cook, learning how to make feta, queso fresco, mozzarella, ricotta, burrata, and cultured butter for the low cost of the class, was a worthwhile investment. The concept of making these products seems so complicated, but it's really quite easy once you have the know-how and can get your hands on the right products (which they sell there). I think this is something fun to do on your own if you're passionate about food, but would also be fun to do with a bunch of friends. They offer private classes if you're just up for doing something which a group of close friends. I can't speak to their wine classes, but I have had some of their wines and they're really pretty good. As for the cheese classes, for $55 you can learn a skill, eat cheese for a few hours, and drink some wine. That's a return-on-investment to me! read more

Really great way to spend a few hours. I decided to take the Brie and Bleu cheese making class just kind of on a whim. It was a small class which was nice for being able to really see the process. We had a few glasses of wine while we learned about the process and got to take home some cheese to practice how to take care of it while it ages. As a home brewer of beer I had always been interested wine, but could not justify the purchase of new equipment for wine making. Fortunately we found Wine and Whey! Our first introduction to Wine and Whey was through a Yelp Elite even which to be completely honest was solidly ok, but hosted more people then it should have. With a large group (like we had with the Elite event) it was a challenge to hear and taste what was being made. But it taught us that there was an establishment that we now knew of to learn how to make wine and cheese. Following that introduction I worked with their team to organize an event for my wife's birthday. The cost was very reasonable and with only having ourselves and 6 (or so) friends, everyone was able to take home enough wine to really justify the event. Also, with doing this as an event, our first visit allowed us to learn the start of winemaking, and the whole process of cheese making (which was entertaining / delicious enough that we purchased one of their cheese making kits and have since continued to use at the house). They took care of a small portion of the process that would have taken less time then the commute (clarifying, etc), and then we came back for bottling. First let me say they have all the amazing equipment that as a home brewer I can not justify (despite REALLY wanting them). Then we had a second event of getting to come down to the location and bottling the wine. Discussing the bottling, they save bottles for the purpose of helping those using their service to not have to purchase new bottles, which I appreciate due to both my wallet and my residence on this planet. They have a very nice label printer and printed full color labels for the bottles. This may seem like vanity, but those bottles (we had two shares in the wine making kit) have since made a great gift to present as it was made by our own hands, and is a much better gift then a improperly formed ceramic piece. Overall a great event, but would suggest limiting your party to under 8 people total. Also as a great plus, they allowed us to bring food for noshing for both of our events. Great time and the staff really have the hearts of educators as they assist throughout the process. read more

I love this concept. This place marries the novelty of making your own wine to the convenience of small class sizes and kits. This would be a great team builder for anyone looking for a team bonding exercise or a nice date for two since they provide a step by step class :). Their wine building kits start at $30. We made a Cabernet valued at about $200 a bottle that takes a little over year to reach full maturity. The facility has three separate rooms. The first is to showcase the wines made during the classes. They have a small area where they serve wine and cheese. They show you how to make cheese as well. I'm not going to lie, the cheese is so good that I might have to start doing that myself... But I digress. The second room is where the magic happens (consequently, it's where the bathrooms are hidden. These are quite clean and nicely decorated). They have all the equipment to make the wine, stir, measure water, pour in grape juice, and adding grape skins. You can bottle it here too. They have lots of fancy-smancy equipment that's great to make professional grade wine. I also like that each kit has specifics like oak chips that you add to the. Is to ensure the wine you make is excellent quality (no vinegar allowed)! read more

This place is amazing! I attended a 30 minute mozzarella course with a friend and had an amazing time. The cost of the class included lots of fresh mozzarella and some wine that was produced inside the store. This is such a fun concept with great people running it - you can tell they put their heart and soul into it. I have yet to return for a winemaking class, but I hope to go to many winemaking and cheese preparation courses/sessions in the future. A great treasure in the RiNo area, for sure! read more

Bought a class on Groupon to make cheese. They took our money but have ZERO class availability. No big deal...asked for a refund and was turned down... So apparently their business practice is to over sell services and classes and keep your money. Terrible business practice, poorly managed promotion. We did the mozzarella making class with a group of 4. I was disappointed for a couple of reasons - 1) the mozzarella didn't turn out, so the instructor changed it up to say we were making mozzarella sauce; and 2)I was expecting that there would be participation. Participation was limited to the attendees shaking a jar to make butter. Some attendees were fascinated with this process, so maybe this is only a thing where I come from, but where I come from this is a common thing for children to do in Kindergarten for morning snack. They're not set up for demos either, like other demos that I have been to where they have a mirror over the workspace. The folks were nice and we still had fun, just not exactly what I was hoping for. read more

The River North district of Denver is an eclectic mixture of visual artists and eclectic merchants selling everything from hand-crafted metalwork to, you got it, cheese! I bought a simple little cheese making kit from Wine and Whey. It included all the ingredients to make mozzarella or ricotta cheese. It also included a simple recipe that was easy to follow and virtually guaranteed success. I have made three batches of mozzarella so far, and while the texture of each has been slightly different, they have all been amazing. When in the store for the kit, I had a delightful conversation with one of the proprietors about Italian cheeses and wouldn't it be great if one could find Water Buffalo milk in the US. Good times. I can't recommend this shop highly enough. They are passionate and kind people and very knowledgeable people, and I look forward to taking advantage of some of their educational offerings. Why didn't I think of this!?...was my initial thought when I made my first stop (there will be many, many more) at this new establishment in RiNo. Learn how to make your own wine and cheese? You had me at wine, I changed my pants at cheese. You can choose from nearly any style of wine you can think of and the friendly owners will guide you through every step of the process, from grape to glass (One session makes 30ish bottles of wine!!). A few friends recently made their own champagne for New Years. Needless to say, I'll be partying with them. It's a perfect venue for private events, team building, holiday parties, saving money on X-mas presents (first homemade gift since kindygarten), getting your girlfriend out of the house, etc. If that's not your thing, take a private class and take everything you need home to geek out in your basement. Too cool!! Even better, the back of their shop is shared with The Cartel Studio, a flexible artistic space with any medium you can think of to get your creative juices flowing. The owner is always there as a resource for beginners and experts alike. Did I mention 3D printing? Holy ****. My mom and I took the buratta class with few ideas or expectations of what we'd get. What a pleasant surprise it was! Pamela is incredibly knowledgable and kind. We had a wonderful evening making cheese, drinking wine and chatting! Only 12 spots are available for this class so it's an intimate setting that allows for lots of personalization in a comfortable and warm setting. I received a groupon as a christmas gift so was excited to "make some wine" as it turned out it was just one of their kits that we mixed and approximately 8 weeks later come back to bottle. As a group we decided on a dessert wine which ended up costing everyone in the group an additional 8.00 dollars, so for a party of 8 that was an additional 64.00 dollars that they collected. Fine. Our kit made 30 bottles but today when we went to pick up our wine, we each got two small bottles (375 ml) and they kept the extra 14 bottles. I feel that they should of at least gave us each another bottle, especially since we paid extra for the wine and didn't get our monies worth. What the hell - this is the smallest bottle of wine I have ever seen. I might also mention that her daughter was in my class and they came prepared with 10 wine labels even though they were only supposed to bring 4? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on here... I will never do this again and don't recommend it to anyone unless you like making wine for this company and their family to keep and or resell? read more

A special person in your life is bound to love anything from their establishment. The tastes, smells and atmosphere in the space is incredible. I found an intro to wine making class on dabble. Google it and thank me later. Signed up myself and my friend. Got there a few minutes early and signed in and grabbed a glass. Katrina, one of the owners, was very friendly, knowledgeable and seemed to really love what she does. The space is great and there's plenty of street parking. One of their friends or significant others created all of the display cases and tables. I would love to have him do some work for me. We sampled wines from other classes and in the first 20 minutes of being there my previous disdain for wine kits was thrown out the window. I am now contemplating which kit to buy. We got our wine started and I can't wait to go back in about a month for the next step. The class was all ladies with one guy. I can't understand why that is, especially when you look at of the sommelier candidates - tons of dudes. The only thing I would suggest is to have some nibbles available because there is nowhere nearby to grab something quick and with all that wine - it could get dangerous. Our Daughter got us the Wine and Mozzarella class and we have never had so much fun. There were 10 of us and the camaraderie was perfect. Pam and Ron are great hosts and very knowledgeable.. and also patient because they had to deal with us. But in the end, we made great wine, great cheese and great friendships.
