This place is amazing! The food delicious and inexpensive! And the service is top top tier! The owner (I assume) wearing the 'Tom and Jerry' shirt were very kind and empathic, and the waitress, who has to be some sort of NASA employee (she's brilliant) who just happens to enjoy provending people good food and great customer service, was very accommodating. Visited this morning while in town. Great breakfast! Hubby enjoyed Regular size hash brown omelette (took half in a box with him when we left) with pancakes. I enjoyed a birds nest with 2 eggs over medium w/sourdough toast. Delicious breakfast! Excellent service as well. Love the calm vibe of the place. Surprised to find out upon arrival they don't take names for tables - you just stand outside in line and they see you out the window and come get you when they have room. Since we are not locals we were not aware of this and it made me think about how it creates an environment where most everybody if they don't know, has to step inside the door to read the sign that tells them that. Not the end of the world, just a bit different. We arrived shortly after 8 o'clock and I don't think our wait was five minutes for a table. When we were finished and leaving there was a line of 12 or so people outside. Also got a carry out order for a friend we were meeting so we opted to get one of the house made cinnamon rolls everybody raves about as a carry out item as well. I have enjoyed a piece of that cinnamon roll two different times today and I still have more than half of it left. It is delicious as well! If we have the opportunity to be back in Holland for breakfast someday we will definitely revisit Windmill Restaurant. read more

We waited about 30 minutes on a Saturday morning and it was worth every minute of the wait. The portions are big, everything was tasty. The toast is home made bread (soft and pillowy). I ran away from home for a few days up to Holland, MI. Spent the first day at the beach. Second day started with a delicious breakfast and coffee at Windmill Restaurant downtown Holland before a few hours of power shopping at the cute shops on 8th st. I got there early enough that I walked right in and sat at the counter. My waiter, Fabian, greeted me kindly and said "what you drinking this morning?". What a sweet young man! The breakfast I chose was a "mini" hashbrown omelet. Yum! The "mini" was HUGE! Breakfast did not disappoint. Soon there was a line forming outside on the sidewalk and I was glad I got here when I did. Will certainly be back next time I run away from home. read more

Here's how one dope in an establishment's employ can spoil what would have been a positive review. My daughter and I ordered cheeseburgers and fries; one with sauteed onions and the other with ranch on the side. Because I didn't know what "olive sauce" was, I ordered that on the side, too. Turns out olive sauce is chopped up olives mixed with mayonnaise, and I know this because instead of being on the side, that goop came slavered all over my burger. Instead of saying, "I'm sorry, I'll get you another one," the waiter said, "I'm sorry, I'll get you a plate so you can scrape it off." By then the burger was a gloppy lost cause. My burger did not have the sauteed onions I ordered, my daughter was missing her ranch sauce, my other daughter's pancakes were served with no butter. We had to keep reminding this brain donor of everything. The place itself is quite charming, and the prices are really low for a trendy area like this, where all the other, fancier places charge two and three times what The Windmill does. And the food, I think, would be quite good with the right people handling it. But that wasn't today, brother. read more

I wish I could be your customer and post a nice review. But being a guest for an hour and a half in Holland, MI for a quick trip from Grand Rapids for the tulips festival to the airport we spent a half hour waiting in line. We did not know how fast the line will be moving. Someone step up 10 minutes before the closing and communicate to the line (front of the line, actually) when us on the back were confused what this person said. We end up being told they won't serve us. I begged to let us in since we are on tight schedule and can't wait another hour anywhere but it was declined. Another place, New Holland had reservations taken at 5:30pm (it was 2pm) and Deep Fry kiosk with street food had a line for A bit of advice being from the tourist city. If you can't accommodate the tourist needs during a busy festival weekend... if places are full and no food trucks or anything else is offered.. you won't get paid and clearly that would be my last trip to the town of Holland, MI. I'm giving you 3 stars. I don't want to be a problem for you future but you should communicate nicer and clearly next time should you face another busy time. Yes, tourists, one day you might be one. And we are in tourist destination #1, so we know what it means to sacrifice our lives to make our guests happy (and fed). Please, communicate to the customers but more - accommodate the customers and you won't get nasty responses. read more

Went here for breakfast a few days ago and it was truly delicious. It's your classic hometown diner where everyone knows everyone. I got an omelette with green peppers, sausage, mushrooms, potatoes, and cheese with a side of homemade wheat bread. I recommend the homemade wheat over the regular wheat/it's thicker and yummier! Didn't even make it inside. After standing out front for 10 minutes without any interaction from the staff. I called to check on a wait time. The person answering the phone was irritated and had no answer for me. "Uh everyone's eating" is what I got instead of the appropriate 20-30 minute wait response. Additionally, if your asking people to wait outside. You should acknowledge their prescience and let them know that you know they are there. read more

I was really excited to try this place during our trip to Holland, as it had great reviews on Yelp and was one of the most rated restaurants as well. However, I was extremely disappointed with my order. My guess is that I just ordered the wrong dish because it was decently busy and there were a line of people outside waiting for orders or tables. Anyways, so that you learn from my experience, do not order the hot turkey open face sandwich! I had a few bites but soon after found it inedible. It was smothered in what tasted like artificial gravy, and the turkey was extremely salty/seemed processed. So much of the gravy made the bread extremely soggy. And lastly, the side of mashed potatoes was extremely bland -- it was like they had no seasoning at all. Very disappointing. Perhaps order other dishes, but not this one! read more

Came to Holland for a vacation and based on the reviews on here, I wanted to eat here. They close at 2pm on Sunday, but came back here Monday morning and they had a line outside. We had breakfast at the "iconic Windmill Restaurant" on our trip to Holland. The food was delicious, especially the Farmer's Omelette, as well as the bacon and sausage . We really enjoyed the fried cinnamon roll - it is a must have! Our waitress, Rachel was handling a number of tables. Though she was really busy, she was the best waitress that I have ever run across.
