The hash browns clearly tasted fresh--like they were cut that morning, not frozen or from a supplier bag. Everything had amazing flavor and gave me energy for the whole day. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend this place--let's support small businesses in America!

Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

We were driving through Carnegie starving and sad that our food options seemed so bleak (Sonic or…read morePizza Hut). Then we spotted Backporch Smokehouse! Husband said that for a BBQ place to make it in rural Oklahoma, it has to be good. And he was right. The outside is very welcoming, cute bench and foliage around a nice patio in front. The inside is sparkling clean and simple. They do a good carry out business but we ate in. I deeply regret not bringing some carryout back with us, it was that good. Brisket and pork were juicy, full of good flavor, and delicious, portions were plentiful. Husband also ordered a hot link which was perfectly spiced. Our entrees came with a fresh piece of soft white bread which was perfect with the hot BBQ sauce. Our meals came with regular BBQ sauce but when I requested hot sauce, he brought some spicy BBQ out and it was fantastic. They also threw some sliced fresh onion on our meats. The guy who waited on us was one of the owners and he told us the sides were made from scratch so we had a few: Cole slaw (some of my favorite of all time), potato salad (in Oklahoma, they mash potato salad like mashed potatoes, it was mustardy, mashed, & tasty), pea salad (amazing!), Mac & cheese (yum!), and a baked potato with butter and some sort of house seasoning on it (fresh and delicious). We ate every single bite and loved it! Prices were extremely reasonable, we got a meat with 2 sides and bread for only $9.95 and it was a ton of food. This is a family owned place and you can tell they take a ton of well deserved pride in their food. Carnegie is a good 45 minutes from home but you bet we will be back! If you are in the area, STOP HERE!

I had the brisket and ribs, and my wife had a rib plate. It was very good. The only reason I can't give this place five stars is because we have Country Tavern near Tyler, which has the best barbecue (especially their ribs) that I have ever had. Every other barbecue restaurant I have ever eaten at is second rate, at best, compared to Country Tavern. But Top Notch is quite good. I would definitely eat there again if in the area.

Sadly, the recommendation proved to be a dud. I had high hopes. When I entered, I noticed the restaurant was cavernous, with far more seating than spaces to park. I was quickly seated. When I scanned the menu, I noticed there was precious little barbecue on it. I looked around the restaurant and saw generous portions on other dishes and was hoping for the same on mine. Not to be: I ordered the rib special with moist brisket. Apparently, the cook did not know what moist meant as mine proved dry and stringy. The ribs were scrawny as if from an emaciated pig. It definitely was not what one expects from Texas barbecue. The side of beans was just a thimbleful. The best part of the meal was the banana pudding for dessert. Service was fine and it seemed like mostly a local crowd. If I returned, I would order something other than barbecue like most other patrons did.
