Very solid bbq place right off the highway. very cheap prices too. we ordered the hot link, beef and rub sandwiches. $4 a pop. the beef was our favourite, having a lot of flavour like jerry and great texture. the bbq sauce was also topnotch and they were all on a toasted bun. the service was exceptionally good. I tried cobbler for the first time a d it was excellent! read more

BEWARE! CROCK POT BBQ & NO SWEET TEA! We should of known when we pulled up at 12:30 on a Saturday and there was not a car in sight to be suspicious. I really wanted to like this place. It was neat and clean, the reviews were positive, the owner was nice and the condiment selection the best ever. BUT, then we saw the crock pots and found out he didn't have sweet tea. Seriously, what BBQ joint doesn't have sweet tea? Not sure where the meat comes from but nothing is prepared fresh there or chopped on site. Only one person needed to dole out what is in the crock pots and from Tupperware tubs. I threw away half my chopped beef sandwich, hubby's link sandwich was sub-par, sliced as thin as possible and neither one of us liked either sauce offered or the cole slaw. Beans were ok. read more

Great service and food. Some local delicious bbq. Limited seating. Look closely or you might just pass it right up.

I hate to do this because the folks there were so nice, but that was probably the worst sliced brisket I've ever had. It was flavorless, dry and tasted like it was cooked in an oven. The potato salad (mustard based) was excellent however. read more

Duncan's Smoke House - Sliced brisket, potato salad and beans. - Barbeque Near Me - Vernon, Texas

The food was great and the owner was super friendly! The combo prices are excellent for fresh smoked meat. We're on a road trip but found out this is where the locals go, coming in to pickup their orders. Avoid the overcrowded mediocre restaurants on the highway and venture over for a bite, you won't regret it! 5 read more

Great bbq. I had the chopped beef sandwich and my husband had the sliced beef brisket sandwich. Both were delicious and so was the coleslaw and potato salad. Very cute inside and extremely clean. We will definitely go back next time we're this direction. They've been in business 73 years so they know what they're doing read more

I've lived in Vernon for 9 hrs having moved in from Nashville Tn. You get pretty spoiled having toured the US and having eat at all the best spots during those years, but I've got to say I wished I'd tried Duncan's years ago. The Food was absolutely Great! Perfect portions, fair price and wonderful service! Saw a realtor sign out front, but after eating there I'm sure the reason for the sale has nothing to do with the food! Read about the place and said in biz since 1949 I believe. I'm sure they're just ready to hang up their apron. Hope to get the chance to eat the plenty more time before it's sold!! read more

Great food and very nice staff. The food was great! It as very clean with friendly staff that was accommodating to what we needed. They do not take card, only cash which was fine. read more

Duncan's is a solid restaurant in Vernon. Their bbq sandwiches are good. The cobbler is good. But what gets me every time is the gumbo. I was skeptical at first because my family is from Louisiana so I wasn't sure about trying a gumbo this far away from Louisiana but I get it every time I'm there. It is delicious and it would definitely be a successful gumbo in Louisiana. Only down side is this place is cash only, no cards. Otherwise I definitely recommend it. read more

Duncan's is the real deal. At first the owners didn't know what to think of us but we talked a little small town football and then they warmed up to us. I got the ribs and the pulled pork with a side of beans and gumbo. My husband had the pork and the sliced beef with beans and cole slaw. We both agreed that the ribs were the winner of both plates. The beef was a bit dry and the pork was good but lacked a little flavor. After some more friendly chatting Greg and Catherine gave us a cobbler since we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary. You could tell that it was home made but I missed the ice cream. There isn't much room inside and while we were there several local people came in and got food to go. The place has been there since 1949 and I like to support who are invested in their businesses and communities. I am very glad that we stopped in. read more

First impression was when we arrive we know the restaurant was fairly small but I read the reviews and decided to stop anyways. The people are very nice and the pork sandwiches were good but not great. However, the potato salad was definitely delicious and the PEACH COBBLER might be the best thing you've never had. read more

This is Texas BBQ at its finest! I just recently discovered this place and it is amazing I love it! I am hopelessly addicted to it. It is in Vernon Texas East wilbarger Street. Nice people and clean place. Had chopped beef sandwich. Not good. Meat was very salty and the "toasted" bun was almost burnt. Had to add hot sauce to beans for flavor. Potato salad was ok but tasted store bought. Won't return. read more

Best BBQ in town!! Great Food, Sweet workers, Clean area, Good prices & did I say Best BBQ. My son, Jackson has a Bar-b-Que addiction! He loves Mr. Greg's chopped beef sandwich with sweet sauce. Other places we've gone the child eats his pickles, relish and chips on the sandwich, but not from Duncan's. He says the sweet BBQ sandwiches are too good to add to so it's all on the side and he tops it off with a cold old fashion glass bottle of Root beer. Jackson & the rest of our family also recommend the homemade original sauce, the sliced beef, potato salad (mustard based, delicious), Cole slaw, & beans. Greg also will cook for your special occasion, with notice and it's wonderful! All I had to do was pick it up before the Graduation party and everyone loved it! If you want a down home, clean, delicious BBQ meal you can't ask for a better place! East end of Wilbarger St. (Us Highway 283) 829 Wilbarger St., corner of Wilbarger & St. James. This is a gem of a place--delicious food, really nice owner and staff. It's a small place--the kitchen is incredibly clean. "We might not be the biggest or the busiest, but we're the cleanest." It's cash/check only but the drive-up ATM at Herring Bank is only a couple of blocks away. The pinto beans are delicious, especially. Homemade cobblers: blackberry, blueberry and peach today. We had all the meats--they're all great. Well worth a stop and we'll be back on our next drive through. Our small children were very welcome. Find the Doll puzzle! read more

This is some of the best BBQ I have ever had anywhere in the country and I travel and eat a lot. Duncan's is top three easy. They have the best hot links I have ever had hands down, and the owners are the nicest people in the world. I will probably never be near Vernon again, but if I am within 100 miles of Duncan's I will go out of my way to make it there. If you are passing through and are hungry (or even if you aren't hungry) stop in and grab a bite, you will not be disappointed. read more

Super good old school non-sweet recipe. Had the beef bbq and hot links sandwiches. Good sides and even fried pies. Iced tea was well brewed.

Good BBQ! Got there 20 minutes before closing for the afternoon and they couldn't have been more friendly. 1/2 lb of meats (I chose the sliced briskets and a couple of ribs), 2 sides and a drink for under $8. They offered two types of BBQ sauce (original & sweet) and asked me afterwards which one I preferred (sweet). Greg the owner didn't mind talking about Bar B Que and shared how they prepared their meats which is always a great conversation. I told him it was my first time and he said what took you so long, we've been open 64 years. I had the potato salad and pinto beans for the sides, both nicely flavored. I'll go back. read more

We just stopped at this local BBQ restaurant in Vernon Texas while passing through on a road trip from Atlanta. We read a few reviews and thought We should stop. Boy, are we happy that we did! The food was excellent! And the service was as well. The BBQ beef and BBQ pork sandwich were delish. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the baked potato potato salad and the beans! Both were outstanding. Thank you Duncan's for the wonderful experience...you now have 2 fans from Atlanta. read more

Unbelievable. Had gumbo made by daughter. Better than New Orleans places, where we went after Duncan's. Chopped pork sandwich with homage BBQ sauce was out of this world. Wen we were there a man came in and said that he has been going there since before he could see over the counter. The restaurant has been there for over 65 years. Definitely should make it a point of going there is passing through Vernon, Tx. read more

Duncan's is great. Super happy we stopped here on a road trip! Chop beef sandwiches and sides were excellent. Loved the cole slaw. Recommend the house BBQ sauce. We went here for lunch because of the good reviews and we were very disappointed.. I got the chopped pork sandwich and it had no flavor other then the bbq sauce.. My husband had the 2 meat combo with ribs and sliced brisket and the ribs were boiled and neither meat had any taste.. We both got some of the homemade cobbler.. He got the pineapple and I got the blueberry and they were both good.. It is a very clean restaurant and the service was good but I don't like to see my bbq coming out of a Tupperware container then piped in the microwave. read more

Wonderful place to stop! Great food. Awesome people! Try the cobbler and chicken soup for sure!

This is a little gem. My wife and I were traveling to Palo Duro Canyon to camp for a few days and were looking for a place for lunch. We read other reviews so we decided to give it a try. We each had a sandwich, one beef and one hot links. Both were great. The beans were nice. The best part - 2 sandwiches, 2 sides each and 2 drinks all for under $20. This is definitely the place to go if you are on the road and passing through Vernon. read more

Very good little BBQ joint. Perfect little mom & pop joint in North TX. Worth going out of your way.

Salt is their primary ingredient. I bought ribs, beans and potato salad. I threw out the sauce and the beans. Too much salt! Half the ribs were fat. Yes, I threw that out, too! My husband asked me how I could determine it was one and done, if I threw everything in the trash? Very nice people. He gave me a taste of his gumbo and I recoiled from that, as well. Fatty and salty. He said it was the first time anyone said his food was salty. Really? If you like fat and salt, this is the place! read more
