    Housemade Banana Bread Sundae

Let me start by saying this is my second stop here. I first wandered in about 33 years ago with my then toddler son. That visit was almost magical. Everyone in the restaurant participated in a fun conversation; the owner at the time made the absolute best catfish I've ever eaten to this day. The level of friendliness in this town was phenomenal and I left that evening with a lasting treasured memory of a man named Wayne and his two kids who worked there. Fast-forward to today...we entered the gift shop and met Cara (I hope that's both remembered and spelled correctly) and Theresa, who were both friendly and welcoming; excellent ambassadors for Shamrock. Cara should be mayor when we return. She welcomes people like she is running for mayor. We chatted while we waited for the cafe to open and I shopped a little. I told her why I was here to see this little cafe again and she caught me up with the family that once owned and ran the cafe and told me about the new owners. She had me feeling like a part of the town, in just the hour we were there. At 11, the cafe opened and we met Jamie and Leanne, two more of the happiest and friendliest people you will ever meet. We chatted about the cafe history and restoration with both of them, Jamie brought the dog some water, and we ordered as other patrons arrived. The place is immaculately clean, looks like it did when it was built, albeit a little more worn than in 1936, has a lot of historic charm and if you care to ask, they'll tell you which booth was where Elvis sat with "The Colonel" when he dropped in one night. Our table had a book about the history of Route 66 on it and I lost the hubby to the book. If you don't recognize it right off the bat, this building is also Luigi's Tire Shop from the movie Cars. When we ordered, I asked Jamie about ordering meat for the dog, who has apparently given up her normal food for lent. She arranged for me to be able to order a pound of chicken that we tasted before setting down for the dog. Luna the Dog woofed it up and I can't blame her. It was juicy and flavorful and I asked for the recipe, but unfortunately, all I learned is that it's smoked. Hubby ordered the brisket burrito and I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with iced tea. The iced tea was real brewed tea without citric acid. Yay. The bun was toasted to a slight crunch and coleslaw topped the pork. The pork was tender, juicy, and tasty with some big chunks mixed in with the small shreds. The coleslaw was good, but more would have been better. I will order extra next time. The balance of the pork and the coleslaw couldn't have been better and that bun held up almost to the end. I made a mess, but shhhh, don't tell anyone. Hubby had the brisket and the smoked meat was "pretty good" which is a rave review from him. He is a man of few words, most of them understated. We truly enjoyed our stop in Shamrock and our visit to the old Conoco station and You Drop Inn Cafe. We will return every time we drive through and will probably make the Shamrock St Paddy's Day parade and festival an annual visit. We highly recommend this cafe, the museum and gift shop, and all the great little places in this town. Hope to see you out there.

Looks just like it does in the "Cars" movie!!

Small menu but quality of food was very good. A little bit pricey, but the Barbecue sandwich was very good.

Food, service and property were all delightful! A fun stop when on I-40 or Rt 66 in the TX panhandle. We'll be back!

The hash browns clearly tasted fresh--like they were cut that morning, not frozen or from a supplier bag. Everything had amazing flavor and gave me energy for the whole day. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend this place--let's support small businesses in America!

Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

Onion rings were of the frozen variety, not bad but in a place like this hand dipped fresh would be so much better. The frito pie was yum! What was really impressive though is how friendly every employee we encountered was. Also super impressive were the young ladies working there, when not busy with customers, they were wiping things down *behind the counter, the drive thru window inside and outside) and just generally keeping the place nice. It has been a long, long time since I've seen this kind of detailed upkeep and busyness by workers in a service business. Great training by the owner and these young ladies will make wonderful employees as they move on to other careers because someone took the time to teach them how to be good employees.... compliments from a hiring manager of many young people who lack this kind of discipline and attention to detail.

No, just basic that you could find just about anywhere BUT! the service was great. Everyone was friendly, we got our food quickly even though it was busy on a Saturday afternoon. There's even a drive thru if you're in a hurry. I would recommend you try for yourself!

This time, I started to get a sausage biscuit for our dog, but remembered how much I loved sausage McGriddle. It's been ages since I've had a McGriddle. The syrup is cooked into the pancake like bun and it goes so well with sausage. I ended up giving our dog, Baxter, the Egg McMuffin and I ate his sausage McGriddle. We were both happy.
