Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

All of the things on the salad bar looked fresh, but they had those little red BB's that are a substitute for bacon bits. That is classic West Texas, small town salad bar right there. Lolly's is also a sort of grocery store, even though a lot of the shelves were bare. They also have a daily lunch buffet--"all you can eat" we were told. (The buffet was only about three feet long but they kept getting phones calls to see what was being served that day---chicken fried steak.) We split a bacon cheese burger (because it was a half pound affair) and some onion rings. Burger was well done but tasty. Everything was clean and service was friendly. Definitely not fancy, but cute and quaint. (One patron came in to buy cinnamon but the shelves were bare. No, worries. Kiddos were totally satisfied, loved the extra cheesy pizza and those fried corn things and had leftover pizza for that night. The guys that worked here were all super sweet. One was even originally from near my hometown! Another reason to stop here beside cheap nosh is a freezer filled with pops, microwaveable meals to go, as well as some toiletries, necessities, and groceries. It's definitely geared to those of us on the go, traveling The Mother Road. *Oh, and there's a gas station around the corner. It's charming in its own way, but not the vintage Route 66 ambiance I was expecting. One thing that deserves high praise is the cleanliness. The café is immaculate, from the dining room to the overall presentation, reflecting a team that clearly takes pride in maintaining the restaurant. The food, unfortunately, was less memorable. The oatmeal was overly thick and dry, lacking the creamy comfort you'd expect. Buttered toast carried an off flavor, suggesting the griddle or butter station could use a refresh. The signature pancake, dusted with a powdered sugar "66" logo, was visually appealing and easily the meal's most Instagram-worthy item, but it too was disappointingly dense. Where Cafe 66 truly shines is its service. Every staff member I encountered was warm, welcoming, and eager to help first-time visitors feel at home. Their hospitality left the strongest impression of the visit. In my opinion, Cafe 66 seems to be transitioning away from being a destination built on Route 66 nostalgia and toward becoming a dependable neighborhood café for the Clinton community. There's nothing wrong with that--in fact, it's probably the more sustainable business model. But travelers seeking an authentic trip back in time may leave feeling that the iconic branding promises more nostalgia than the dining experience ultimately delivers.
