On a long road trip and needed a break...Was hesitant to stop since there weren't any current reviews, but saw that the parking lot was full as were the spots across the road...so figured it must be good enough to take a chance on. It was! We just ordered burgers because we were in a hurry, but they were great...same on the hand cut fries and hand battered onion rings. All the food coming out of the kitchen that others ordered looked great. We had the Philly burger...burger topped with rib eye steak pieces, onions, peppers, mushrooms and Swiss cheese. It was one of the best burgers we've had. We were so disappointed that another diner took the last piece of pie, I'd say you can't go wrong stopping here. I get to eat here once every few months and it always has outstanding chicken fried steak with homemade mashed potatoes and cream gravy. I get onion rings, which are also excellent. All of the pies are good, the cherry cream and buttermilk are my favorite. Take a 20 minute detour off of I-40, go to Wheeler and experience this food. read more

Overall a good experience. Our party of 4 gave everything a 5 except for the taco meat. It was bland, it needed salt and seasonings. Turkey club sandwich was very good and the onion rings top notch. Our waitress, Tia, was a go getter! Great service. It did take a while for the cooks to get the food out. If you ever go to or through Wheeler, TX, it's worth a stop. read more

My buddy and I made it a point to make it out to Mel's Diner, and we barely made it in for an early dinner. We were excited that locals abounded this eatery, but Mel's was soon to disappoint. There is an awesome local atmosphere as this really small town diner has a low-key, off-the-beaten path location. The spicy burger was disappointing. The grilled onions were nice, but the meat was dry, and the jalapaneos were not spicy. The fries are OK, nothing special. If you are heading around the area, think about checking it out, but I will say that Amarillo has some much better grub. Even if you are into small town cafes, this may not satisfy your hankering for a greasy spoon. The food was just kind of mediocre. read more

Been there 4 times. 1st three excellent experience. 4th not so good. The food was excellent as always. The service was extremely bad. The waitress was upset when asked for extra time....then waited 15 minutes before she came back then we waited 25 minutes fir our food. We asked for separate tickets at beginning. Never checked back had to call her over for the check and it was all on 1 ticket. There was hugh table that came in after we did and they got there food right away...she was not there waitress! We will not ever recommend or drive 49 miles out of way again. I do not know her name but she knows who she is! read more

Stopped at Mel's Diner with some friends for breakfast on a road trip and enjoyed the feel of the place. Ordered biscuits, gravy, sausage and hash browns and was pleased will it all. The lady serving our table made a rude remark about me already having a menu before she passed them out. (little did she know it was already on the table) Then she proceeded to come back 25 min after taking our order and mention she forgot to take the order to the kitchen. Not sure how that happened. We spent over an hour at the place and had a somewhat neutral experience. Food was satisfying but service could improve. Enjoyed the small town feel and seeing locals in the place. read more

Just what we needed during long road trip home. We stumbled upon this place and the food and service were great!

We went for our Christmas dinner. Our group of thirty was so upset because it took 2 hours to get 4 people's food. After asking multiple times for my sons drink I finally had to ask firmly. The waitress got on attitude with us along with other customers. She then sent the manager over and he cussed us out. I definitely don't appreciate being called names in front of my kid. Will NOT be going back. How are you supposed to eat and shop local when you get treated that way. read more

My family met my Mom there for lunch on Sunday around 12 noon. Always before it had been great. Today, although the restaurant was only around half full, our food came to the table one plate at a time, taking 20 minutes to receive all our food. Of course, no one ate till the last plate arrived. By then, the food was pretty cold. Although, the food was a little above average--- cold is cold. I can't believe I told every one how good Mel's was, to be served like this. Next time I think we'll just go to Soto's or Maxy's. read more
