The hash browns clearly tasted fresh--like they were cut that morning, not frozen or from a supplier bag. Everything had amazing flavor and gave me energy for the whole day. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend this place--let's support small businesses in America!

Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

    Mejia's Bakery

We stopped at Mejia's Bakery while passing through town looking for a quick lunch. At first glance,…read morethe place almost looked closed--it's very unassuming from the outside and located in an older strip-style row of storefronts that gives off a bit of an old-west small-town vibe. Don't let that fool you though; once you step inside it's clear this is a very authentic Mexican spot. The interior is long and narrow. On the right side when you walk in there are bakery cases filled with a wide variety of traditional Mexican pastries and baked goods. On the left there's some seating and an ice cream area, and further toward the back there's a larger seating section that looks like it's used for their buffet (which we were told they offer on weekends). We visited on a Wednesday, so we ordered from the counter instead. The people working there were very friendly and welcoming, and the prices were very reasonable. I ended up ordering a cheese quesadilla with fries. The fries were actually excellent--crispy, salty, and exactly what you'd hope for. The quesadilla itself was okay. In fairness, this is clearly a place that specializes in more traditional Mexican dishes, and I probably didn't order the thing they're best known for. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food and pastries, this seems like a great local spot and it's definitely worth checking out. If your taste leans more toward American-style Mexican food, you might find the menu a little different than what you're used to. Overall, a friendly local bakery and restaurant with very fair prices and a lot of traditional options.

Flour tortillas fresh, hot and charred...delicious! We got some things from the bakery to take with us, can't wait to try them. They have a Buffett at lunch on certain days, so sorry we missed that. You're not from 'round here, are ya'?…read more We wandered off I-40 to find some sustenance (not wanting to eat at a Dairy Queen or truck stop). We landed in downtown McLean at Lolly's. Upon entering, we were greeted by the cashier/busboy/waiter with, "Ya'll traveling?" We were the only non-locals in this joint. Fun spot to stop just for the local color. Lolly's is also a sort of grocery store, even though a lot of the shelves were bare. They also have a daily lunch buffet--"all you can eat" we were told. (The buffet was only about three feet long but they kept getting phones calls to see what was being served that day---chicken fried steak.) We split a bacon cheese burger (because it was a half pound affair) and some onion rings. Burger was well done but tasty. Everything was clean and service was friendly. Definitely not fancy, but cute and quaint. (One patron came in to buy cinnamon but the shelves were bare. No, worries. The cashier just went to the kitchen and came out with a small to-go cup with a bit of cinnamon in it for her. Gotta love small towns! )

It's located on a street that looks completely deserted, and actually is for the most part. I mean, it looks like an old western movie set or something! It's just a stones throw from old Route 66 which is why I'm assuming most people would be in the neighborhood. It was our stop between The Route 66 Museum in Elk, OK and Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. We were of course the only people in this little joint decorated with 50's nostalgia.... The cuisine is American comfort food as is most along the infamous highway. Here it's offered at insanely low prices. The kiddos were starving and ordered a pizza, 1/2 plain, 1/2 mushroom, a single pancake and some kind of corn nuggets the staff suggested with creamy dipping sauce. Kiddos were totally satisfied, loved the extra cheesy pizza and those fried corn things and had leftover pizza for that night. The guys that worked here were all super sweet. One was even originally from near my hometown! Another reason to stop here beside cheap nosh is a freezer filled with pops, microwaveable meals to go, as well as some toiletries, necessities, and groceries. It's definitely geared to those of us on the go, traveling The Mother Road. *Oh, and there's a gas station around the corner. We were told to fill up there as there's not another one for miles and miles! **A couple of neat things we stumbled upon while in the area are an old fashion abandoned gas station great for photo ops as well as a 10 Commandments sculpture on a corner just in front of the towns church which was pretty ironic being that it was Passover when we were here.
