four of us came here for the first time on a bustling saturday around 6pm.
first impressions:
the space was formerly a post office, and the way they've utilized the layout is absolutely confusing for a first-timer. after being dropped off by my boyfriend, i circled around to main st which- one would think- is the obvious entrance to the building, which is just beyond a patio area. nope. entrance is on high st. well, upon entry, i found myself eye to eye with a server at a server station in a very crowded, hopping bar. i looked desperately for a host stand and found none. seeing a long hallway snaking to my left, i ventured down and eventually came upon a waiting area with host stand. some signage would be appreciated...
the waiting area is ill-placed as it is fairly narrow, and there is yet another entrance exactly in the middle of it. this is a very high traffic area and, were i to visit again, i would only come at an off-peak hour, due to the ill use of the space.
i was quoted a half hour wait time, which was accurate.
the beer:
there was a huge variety, both of those brewed in-house, as well as other specialty beers carried on draft and by the bottle. I went with the Blache de Willi, a farmhouse style IPA brewed with orange peel; it was good, but not amazing. My boyfriend went with the Certified Gold which he also liked. This place is a veritable homage to beer, most notably evidenced by the wealth of beer taps that decorate the perimeter of the cavernous space.
the service:
we were waited on my dan, who is a 9 year veteran of the restaurant- and it absolutely showed. his professionalism was evident, though he was still very friendly. he was totally knowledgeable, and didn't miss a beat.
the food:
we started off with an order of wings. at $9.99 for 12, these were juicy, meaty, and fried to a crisp; a great value. we ordered the jerk seasoning which was nuanced and full of flavor. they arrived without bleu cheese (understandable- we didn't order them buffalo-style), but a side quickly arrived upon request. i'll be honest: the "bleu cheese sauce" was delicious, but bleu cheese, it was not. this had more of a dill-herbaceous flavor, and the "chunks" of bleu cheese resembled (and tasted like) cottage cheese.
entrees are accompanied by a salad or a soup of the day. everyone seemed to like what they ordered. i tasted my mom's new england clam chowder, and it was delicate while still full of clam flavor- a true home run.
for entrees, my boyfriend ordered an ahi tuna steak special. it was served medium rare (a perfect medium rare) and coated in a teriyaki sauce with sesame seeds. his sides were a garlicky broccoli sautee along with a "fried rice." the tuna was good, the broccoli well-cooked, but the rice was lacking. it appeared they had taken their usual rice pilaf and just added some soy sauce. it was disappointing.
my dad ordered a king cut prime rib which came with a baked potato. it came the medium rare that he ordered, and he ate it all. there was a healthy side of jus which i suspect he was tempted to drink to finish off once his steak was done.
mom got baked stuffed shrimp with which she was very happy. shrimp were plump, juicy, and full of crab meat stuffing. the rice and veggie sautee with which they were served were very tasty. i tasted the crab meat stuffing, and actually think they could offer this as its own little side.
i was in the mood for a chicken caesar wrap, and was highly disappointed. let's be honest: chicken caesar wraps are a gamble. too much or too little dressing. soggy or super-crunchy croutons. soggy wrap, or poor construction- there's a number of things that could go wrong. in this instance, the wrap consisted of exactly lettuce, chicken, and dressing. no cheese, no croutons- nothing of interest, or to help the flavor. there was too little dressing, and the chicken was not properly cut (i.e. the breast had cut marks, but was still intact, making it difficult to take lady-like bites). i elected to go with the cajun french fries as a side. the first batch of these were limp and luke warm. i sent them back (hey- if i'm going to spend the calories...) and the second batch was hot, but still limp. if you like your fries crispy, go with something else; these are not. my side of cole slaw, however, was a perfect balance between vinegar and mayo, and had a healthy addition of black pepper for seasoning. i also got a small side of dill pickle chips which were yummy.
due to distance from my house, i don't think we'll be back. if we were closer, i might give it another shot. read more
