I'd been wanting to try Sam's BBQ for quite some time, and I finally made my way over!…read more Unfortunately, Sam wasn't there (he was at a wedding ), but his brother was holding things down. He was super friendly and welcoming, which I definitely appreciated. I ordered the 2-meat plate with ribs & brisket, mac & cheese, and yams, plus a sausage sandwich. The brisket was nice and tender, but I asked for a moist/loose cut, and I don't think that request translated. It still had good texture, just wasn't quite what I was hoping for. The ribs were good, but nothing really stood out to me. I think I'm just used to a different style of BBQ. The yams definitely tasted like they came from a can, and the mac & cheese... let's just say it could use a little more love. I also grabbed the sausage sandwich. It was okay, but I'm used to homemade links with a deeper smoky flavor, and this one just didn't have that barbecue smoke profile I was looking for. To be fair, maybe I just caught them on an off day. I was literally the only customer there, and at first I honestly thought they were closed. Now... being from Houston, it's hard not to compare BBQ. We have some seriously incredible barbecue spots. Dare I say... some of the best in Texas... maybe even the world! I'd still be willing to give Sam's another try when Sam himself is there, because everyone has an off day. Hopefully next time I'll get to experience what so many people have been talking about!

You walk in the establishment and it is like you step back in time to a diner style retro vibe. We sat in the dining area where there is counter, table or booth seating available. We were approached quickly and service was friendly and efficient. We ordered and shared the 3 meat plate with pork ribs, smoked chicken wings, and brisket. The brisket was tender with a nice smoky flavor, and the pork ribs were juicy and flavorful. The smoked wings were a great addition and had a good balance of smoke and seasoning. They make their own flavorful bbq sauce. For sides, I tried the fried okra and a side salad with ranch. The okra was crispy and paired well with the BBQ, while the salad was a nice lighter option to balance out the meal. Portions were filling and the casual BBQ atmosphere made it a great spot to relax and enjoy some comfort food. After the meal we went out to the back patio to check out some live music. Most people were seated in the shaded patio area and it was high energy with a stage and band performance. A great local institution that's been bringing folks together over great food and company for decades. Definitely would come back to try their weekly specials at a reasonable price.

Located on Barton Springs Road since 1988, it made headlines in 2025 when its own staff got together to save the restaurant from closure...a true test of how much Green Mesquite BBQ means to the Austin community. This BBQ spot is old school Austin...casual, affordable, and unassuming...feels like a neighborhood diner. The walls are plastered with everything...pictures, posters, signage. The name is derived from their use of green mesquite wood, which provides a distinct, slightly sweeter smoke profile. Green Mesquite hosts happy hour 3-6 pm, which we got to experience. We ordered chili-cheese fries and a glass of wine from the happy hour menu, which were $5 and $4, respectively. We also ordered the rib plate along cole slaw (my choice) and fried okra (my friend's choice.) We also shared peach cobbler with ice cream. I was not very hungry as I had a large late lunch. The standouts for our meal were the ribs and the peach cobbler. Green Mesquite is one of few BBQ places in Austin where you can buy a BBQ plate under $15. In addition, there is a small stage with an outdoor courtyard. Green Mesquite offers live music, hosts open mic and acoustic jamborees. Green Mesquite epitomizes local! Happy to support this great, longstanding Austin business.

The Pork Steak was dry, and I did not care for the seasoning however, I ate only one half of the Pork Steak and the following morning, I wrapped the other half in foil, put it in the oven for about 30 minutes at 250 and I actually enjoyed it. As for the sides, I chose the Mac n Cheese and Green Beans and believe me, there was no excitement to be found. I believe in giving a venue a second chance so I will return to check out their smoked meats and hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Their Saturday special was a two meat plate with two sides for $20 (normally $23), so I went ahead and ordered that. It came with a nice serving of brisket, thinly sliced, and on the dry side but not so dry to be an issue. It had a nice mild flavor. It also came with sausage which had a bit of a kick and good texture. For my sides I picked beans which were pretty good, and cole slaw which was a bit supermarket-y, I'd probably switch that one next time. Add bread, pickles, and onions and this is a pretty solid, under the radar BBQ joint!

I was impressed with the chicken fried steak and the complimentary corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits. I even got a slice of sweet potato pie once near Thanksgiving. But Hoover's closed down the S.A. restaurant a few months later. No biggie. I'll just go dine at the original one in Austin. A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.

The Black Eyed Peas were bold and spicy, with chunks of smoky burnt ends mixed in. Definitely not shy on seasoning. They serve everything on compostable plates which I really appreciate.
