It was October 2015 when we reserved the Hellenic Center for a December 2016 wedding. We were impressed with the size and finishes of the facility. As the planning process began, we dealt with a new sales director. She was eager to meet our needs. We felt our requests were reasonable, as did she. As the wedding approached, details that were discussed were not being done.
The day of the wedding did not run smoothly. We were told they were short staffed. Before the ceremony, we were informed no photos could be taken on the Juliet balcony or on the settee couch. These areas were requested in advance since December isn't a picturesque month for outdoor photos.
Cocktail hour consisted of platters that looked as though they came from a warehouse store. An inexperienced bartender served expired Greek beer and didn't know how to uncork a bottle of wine.
Due to the lack of staff, family members helped with the changeover of the banquet room. If not, it was doubtful all tasks would be completed in time.
As the meal was served, water wasn't replenished, guest were unaware ice tea was available, and coffee was refilled once. The lighting of the room, that was discussed prior, was never implemented. The lights above the sweetheart table did not work. The dessert table that was to display the cannoli, was never set up.
Most concerning to anyone who is considering this venue should be the alcohol. This venue doesn't have a computer program or token system to tally drink consumption. Our "generous" amount that should have lasted most of the night, per the director, didn't make it past our cocktail time. We had approx. seventy five drinkers, fourteen of which were in the bridal party having pictures taken. The remainder of the guests were in a very long line being served by somebody who didn't know the difference between a Mythos and a Heineken. We find it hard to believe a $1500.00 drink allotment couldn't make it quite two hours. We asked that after our drink allowance was reached, the bar turn into a cash bar. We requested not to be approached for additional money. That request was not honored. The bride was asked as she was entering the reception, if she would like to increase the bar amount. We felt that was very tacky.
In retrospect, when there are a lot of things that are changed at the last minute, done wrong, or not done at all, it makes a tremendous difference in the outcome of an event. I caution those who choose this venue. There is definitely potential to be realized but it cannot be reached by short cutting and/or short staffing.
On a more positive note, the food was genuinely good, the venue looked lovely after we had our decorations in place and anytime friends and families join in celebration of a wedding it becomes a wonderful memory. read more
