This was a terrific choice. We stayed in the John Rolfe room, which was a second-floor room with a king bed. Every room has a private bath, but we found that this room, original to the home, had a slightly larger bath than some of the others. The owner and host at breakfast was a terrific guy with a great sense of humor, broad knowledge, and a wealth of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. The breakfast was very good and each day featured coffee and orange juice along with healthy selections from the gardens. One day, we had scrambled eggs, ham, and fruit. Another breakfast featured a spinach quiche with home fries and fruit. One small word of caution. If you are a hearty breakfast eater who enjoys bagels, toast, and pancakes in large quantities and intends to skip lunch and have dinner around 6:30 pm, rethink that plan. You will have to stop for lunch or, at the very least, plan to have snacks with you. In fact, the breakfast area had a supply of chocolates and snacks, such as corn chips, popcorn, and potato chips, to take along. The location, right on Jamestown Road across from the College of William and Mary, was only 1/2 mile from Colonial Williamsburg and 5 miles from the Jamestown Settlement and Archaeological Site. Even with a 7-year-old and two seniors, it was an easy walk to Colonial Williamsburg and a short drive to just about any restaurant you would like, from fast food to a variety of cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Italian. I have no reservations in recommending this bed-and-breakfast.

An unforgettable farm-to-table experience in the heart of Charles City…read more We had the absolute pleasure of attending a Sunday lunch at Peace Hill Farm in Charles City, Virginia on April 6, and it was nothing short of magical. Set outdoors behind the historic farmhouse, the setting was as perfect as the weather--sunny skies, blooming trees, and the peaceful charm of the countryside. Chef Eric Garcia, who also happens to be the farm manager, prepared a spectacular multi-course meal that showcased the best of local ingredients. Fun fact: Chef Eric was formerly a chef at the famous Trellis Restaurant in Williamsburg, so it's no surprise the food was incredible. We started with a beautifully arranged charcuterie board featuring Virginia artisanal cheeses and Peace Hill Farm-cured meats, perfectly paired with a 2023 Thomas Henry Pinot Noir. The butternut squash soup with rosemary and sage was a standout, followed by slow-roasted barbacoa-style beef with local oyster mushrooms and thyme potato gruyere flan--rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Portions were generous, and they even encouraged guests to go back for seconds--something we happily took advantage of! For dessert, the hummingbird cake with toasted pecans and mocha caramel sauce was divine, and the locally roasted coffee from Flying Kite in Williamsburg was the perfect finish. I wish I had taken photos, but everything was so delicious I dove right in without even thinking about it! Our gracious host, Susan, welcomed everyone with warmth, and her children helped serve throughout the meal, adding such a personal, family touch. The event was intimate, with about 30 guests in attendance--that's their typical limit--and it created a cozy, communal feel. These lunches tend to sell out well in advance, so definitely check their calendar early if you're hoping to attend. After lunch, we were treated to a hayride tour of the farm where we got to meet the animals--including brand new baby lambs that had just been born! We also visited pigs, chickens, cows, and horses, and learned about the thoughtful, sustainable practices the family has followed for generations. Peace Hill Farm offers more than just lunches--they host afternoon teas and other seasonal events throughout the year. If you're a camper, you can even stay on-site through Hipcamp or Harvest Hosts, and there's also a cozy Airbnb cottage and a traditional B&B right on the property. This place is a true hidden gem--beautiful, welcoming, rooted in family, and absolutely worth a visit.

I made reservations for me and my friend. It was a lovely drive ... At first... the gps directions are awful. I was taken down a road which was designated as peace hill - but we ended up at a red house, no one there, then we called and got even worse directions. The woman on the phone told us to go by the "red hen house" and through the woods... it was barely a road, full of tree roots, dirt path, and rocky terrain. After a 1/2 hour, we finally made it and end up at the back of the building. Come to find out, if she had just told us to go back to the main road and keep going 1/4-1/2 or so, we'd see the other entrance to the main house. Not a great first impression. The grounds were lovely and the farm animals gave a pastoral vibe. Inside was pretty too, but we were led to a rather secluded back room full of wool and yarn. Not that it wasn't cozy, but quite different from the dozens upon dozens of tea rooms I've been to. The lady who was "minding the store" didn't seem like she knew what she was doing. It took ages to get our teas and the tea (earl grey) tasted bland and stale, the soup was a putrid green (inedible) and while we were waiting we heard her chatting on the phone. Anyway, she wasn't the owner, so maybe she was new or just helping out?? The tea tier arrived and it looked nice... the sandwiches were good, basic cucumber, egg salad, and a pesto, with a mini ham biscuit... the scones were not good - sorry - but they were served with loads of cream and jam yet they should be served plain and the "condiments" on the side. My friend who can't have the toppings and preferred a plain scone, asked for a plain one. The lady said it would take 20 minutes . Which it did, and longer. All and all, it wasn't a very relaxing experience. I took some nice pictures, and we enjoyed the surroundings, but the afternoon tea service itself was mediocre. Sadly, we were disappointed, and I really wanted to love this place since I had heard good things... I'm sure the bed and breakfast side of the experience is probably much better. The sheep, the goats, the wool, the crafts, the pasture raised products, the farm life... that is your best bet from the other reviews I've read, but maybe you'll have a better tea time than we had. We might have to give this place another try and see if it improves.

There may be a family that benefits from housekeeping that swings a door into your feet at 9am, because they are hanging off of a creaky bed, but it certainly wasn't mine. Not that one would want a cigar after eating chocolate pudding that tastes like it was infused with Trix cereal or any of the other dishes who sacrifice taste for novelty. I would have at least been frightened by the Colonial Williamsburg ghost tour, but after staying at this location, I realized that even the spirits probably wouldn't stick around.

The all-inclusive option was great for us, trying to plan our wedding in just a few months, and truly helped SO much with not having to worry or stress about anything! The venue itself offers a lot of flexibility in areas to have your ceremony! We chose to be outside for the ceremony, on the patio for our cocktail hour and send-off, and indoors for eating and dancing! We loved getting to use every part of this beautiful venue! From the moment we booked, Tracy (our wedding coordinator) went above and beyond for us! She offered thoughtful advice, helpful recommendations, and always responded quickly, no matter how small the question. She met with us multiple times throughout the planning process and really took the time to get to know us as a couple and to understand our vision for our day. On the wedding day, Tracy was incredible! She coordinated every moving part seamlessly, kept us calm, and made sure the entire day flowed perfectly. By the end of the night she became like family and was passing out cake, making sure guests had everything they needed, and even made an appearance on the dance floor with us! We could not have done any of this without her! After the wedding, everything was already packed and organized for us to pick up the next day! We spent one entire afternoon just sitting on the patio and enjoying a drink. There are so many great things about this hotel. It's got an excellent old world vibe, the beds are big and comfy, the rooms are spacious, and service is courteous. You can easily drive into the historic part of Williamsburg. I was also worried about the temperature of the room - it's quite large and tall, so I expected the air to be painfully cold to compensate, but our room was always a pleasant temp. I knocked down one star for the terrible sound insulation. I understand that this is an old property, but it's also a hotel where people want to sleep - I should not be able to hear every conversation of the people next door or, the absolute worst, every rumbling footstep of the person above us. It was especially awful the last day when our upstairs neighbor woke up at their usual 7:30 time and spent two hours packing. I didn't bring this up to staff because I had already unpacked and gotten settled in that first night and it felt like quite a hassle to potentially move rooms. I do hope they invest in a way to improve sound insulation, and if I stay here again it would only be on the top floor.

They took…read moreeffort to remember you and ask about plans, and followed up with inquiries about how the day went. We felt respected and valued. The location was also good, if it's what you want. Basically we were less than 15 minutes from everything. So just far enough away that it was an escape, but close enough that you're not spending forever in the car just to get somewhere. The breakfasts were also good. Though it was mostly a set menu, so little change between days. That's sadly where I have to end with the positives. The whole hotel felt like it was once lavish and beautiful, but has since been neglected and permitted to fall into disrepair. Everywhere you looked you would see something in need of attention. Drywall corner tape was peeling throughout our room. Leaks had been repaired (I hope) but the damage to the walls and ceiling had not. Sections of outside trim was missing (a welcome invitation to critters). The pool tiles were mostly cracked or damaged which could be extreme hazardous to bare feet. Fixtures and fittings throughout the hotel clearly had been installed with little to no attention to detail. Like i said, it looked nice once upon a time, but needs A LOT of effort and money spent on it to get back to that level. The price they're charging today doesn't match. The cleanliness of the room was also far from acceptable. Under the bed and sofa clearly hadn't been cleaned in a year. Surfaces that were in eye sight were dusty, pet hair was in the carpet, and we found used tissues and makeup pads in the room after we checked in. There are spider webs on the ceiling of the lobby, and dust caked into the air vents (improperly installed I might add) in the bathrooms. We also ran out of shampoo and body wash on the second day.... meaning these were not checked between guests. The hair dryer was broken. The shower head was so powerful it hurt to use. There were never any cushions on any of the outdoor furniture. And part of the pool area was covered in fruit berries from a tree rendering it unusable. Not once cleaned in the 4 days we stayed. Not to mention trash in the flower beds that had not been cleaned up from other guests. But maybe worse (certainly more inconvenient) than that, there is no WiFi or cell service in the hotel. So any planning of activities, uber orders, keeping touch with work/family has to be done away from the hotel. And though we didn't plan on any TV watching, the TVs don't work. So don't plan on any internet or TV access during your stay despite it being listed as an amenity. Once upon a time this could have been a grand place to stay, and it seems like the owners are still living in the past. Despite the above, we enjoyed our time, but won't visit again. 2 stars is honestly pretty generous a review.
