After a few refills of pain medication for migraines that I've been on for years, he refused to continue prescribing them. I guess I'm not white enough. I'm sure if I had an Atherton or Palo Alto address he would not have an issue. Spent 45 mins of my time on first visit talking, asking questions on why the migraines - why the pills. He seemed to take me seriously but guess not. Again not white enough, Then 3 months in Straw must have gotten scared about refilling them. Said they are not good for me. His new patient exam was exactly 9 mins , ordered a bunch of tests . Quite a few antibody tests , which I declined ( because I knew they were unnecessary) yet they disregarded by request and did the blood work . I got a bill and despite the fact that we have great insurance coverage . I am a health care professional, when I disputed , Sutter health used " standard of care " on me . Some of my blood work came in elevated , isn't it standard of care to follow up on your patients who need attention . Is it just " standard of care " on paper ? Please save yourself the trouble ! Doesn't ask any questions. Does bare minimum. Speed runs the appointment I was there for 1 minute. Gave me no information or help. There's a reason he's always available. I was in severe pain and asked to get any help at all and was told by his nurse he can't do anything. Maybe he was just being honest haha. Might as well search up your issues rather than waste your time here. One nurse was nice, the other main one sitting in middle had to be bugged multiple times to go into the office to check on my results. I was told 15 minutes and waited over 35 min. Asked they said it would be 4 minutes waited another 30. The worst experience I've ever had. A 5 hour ordeal for a sore throat and no help at all.. read more

If I could give a star for a negative review, I would give a minus 5. He is horrible. He needs to retire. I saw him in January, because he was the ONLY doctor available - and, there is a reason why; he is always the ONLY one available. I was in to see him for pink eye; 10min, he wrote me script and his fee was $247. Regardless of fact we have excellent insurance, I submitted a Quality of Care complaint for the Fee; for the service. What an idiot! Let me summarize: 1) Normal primary Dr - (Gina Serraiocco, who is fabulous) not available, asked to see anyone who was available as I've had insomnia lasting over 2 months and about to lose it. Taking Ambien but don't like being on something habit forming, and want to know about alternatives. 2) Enter Dr. Idiot Straw 3) He spends literally 2 minutes with me for the entire appointment. 4) Tells me i need to go back to Dr. Serraicco for a recommendation. Why the hell did I get referred to you if I have to go back to her anyway?! 5) Tells me I should try making the room nice and dark, no TV in bed, bed is just for sleep. NO SHIT - umm first of all, common sense. Second of all, I have this thing called the Internet where I can go for basic information like that if I'm stupid enough to not know it already. I went back to Dr. Straw for my FAA medical and I had an even better experience than before! If you have medical issues with the FAA I would recommend Dr. Straw for your FAA medical. He is very understanding and made the whole examination process a pleasure. You now have to enter your information on the FAA website before your appointment. Came in for severe chest pains and had difficulty breathing. Dr. Straw asked me a total of 3 questions, checked my heart rate and for any pain in my ribs. He said I was fine. But I was NOT fine - during the appointment, I still had major chest pain and difficulty breathing and told him that. He ordered a few blood tests and then sent me on my way. I am puzzled by Dr. Straw's one-star reviews, especially the ones that say he is rude. I've seen him quite a few times (as a backup to my primary care physician in the same practice), and I have always found him to be gentle, pleasant, and courteous. He even once said to me "I hope you feel better," which I don't think I've ever heard from any other doctor! It seems as though some patients are frustrated by him because his examination did not allow them to pass their FAA (flight) certification. This may be what's skewing his ratings - angry pilots who really needed to pass that exam. I can't speak to that, but I have no problem with him as a primary care physician. I'd say he has average competence and above-average bedside manner. read more

Ask around before trusting your FAA medical to this guy. I blindly continued with Straw after he took over a wonderful practice from another doctor. What a mistake. After taking the same medications with the same problems for years, the FAA reviewed his submission and my medical was revoked! Find anyone else if you want to keep flying. Talk to CFI's, flight instructors and other pilots. Ask around. You have been warned. This will take me a long time and a lot of money to fix. Trust me, the FAA is not your friend so you need a doctor willing to help and to do no harm. Straw is not that doctor. read more

Do not go to Dr. Straw for a FAA medical. He is unwilling to work with the applicant. Particularly concerning is the vision testing apparatus used. It was hard to work with when wearing glasses. One week before visiting Straw, I had a physical which included an eye exam and had 20/25 R, 20/20 L, and 20/20 both. Same result in a visit to my eye doctor the day before visiting Straw. But using Straws apparatus I could only achieve 20/40 wearing the same glasses! read more
