They aren't nearly as good as they used to be. Their selections for unusual sizes (esp. wide widths) have shrunk drastically, and run very, very expensive. The staff make an effort, but are all too likely to give up after two or three tries...or try to convince you to buy something that isn't quite right and/or isn't what you wanted. This is a serious problem, as I have "difficult feet" and there just isn't any other place within a reasonable distance that I have any chance of finding what I need. read more

Went in this evening with my daughter to look and the lady followed us everywhere as if we were criminals. We had told her several times that we were just looking. The last straw was when we stepped behind the chairs to look at some shoes and the lady yelled "employees only behind the chairs" - there was no sign that stated this. After this horrible experience we will never return. The other employees were polite and did not stalk us throughout our visit and in the past have had good experience. Looking for work boots with good name brands and someone to help.Went to several stores looking for work boots and found a variety of mismanaged and thoughtless retailers. In one place ( self service) there are no benches to sit on?Should I use the floor? Without fail three other places had possible shoes I might purchase, just not my size. Good selection & friendly service. However, they do not save your order history and if you need to use a warranty and need their help, good luck. I bought some Keens that have a 1 year warranty and failed after 6 months (stitching started to unravel). Although very nice about it, they were unable to look up my order--they admitted that "our systems are outdated" which is very unfortunate. If I had bought from an online company I would have been able to submit a warranty claim to Keen and had them repaired or replaced. This is sad proof that supporting local isn't always right for the consumer. @Wilkins, it's time to enter the digital age, by not doing so you are hurting your customers and not providing the added-value that IMHO a brick & mortar should. You would think a shoe store is a shoe store right? Well you are wrong! Wilkins Shoecenter is in what's called "Old Town" Winchester. VA. The parking is slim pickings, but if you can not find a parking spot at one of the few outside of the store, you can just park the next street over or at the close by parking lot on a meter and take a nice stroll down the walking mall. I have visited the store a few times over the years, but most recently the beginning of February 2018. I came in the store obviously looking confused because a nice lady immediately asked me if I needed help because I looked confused. I came in with my 12 year old daughter in tow and told the lady we need indoor cheer shoes. She brought us to the right section and told us the different styles, brands and prices. Most places I have bought shoes from send us to the section of shoes we may like and walk away. This nice lady (I did not catch her name), stayed with us asked us my daughters size and measured her feet, she helped us even with trying on what seemed like 100 cheer shoes. 100% recommended to everyone and anyone with a need for any type of foot wear. read more

This store is a throwback to the days where the employees were very helpful in the store. The size of the place is misleading from outside. Once you're inside it's a fairly large store with a huge selection of shoes for everyone. I wear a very large shoe size, 16 4E, and I have a very hard time finding anything without using the internet. I've bought two pairs of Dunhams from here. They've had to order them for me which is fine and they are good about calling you as soon as they are in. When I showed up to pick them up they prepare the shoe/boot and help you out them on. I can't recall the last time this happened. read more

If I could give a negative review I would. My 17 year old son plays football for Millbrook High School and went in to purchase a pair of cleats as they do every year because they are set up through the school to receive a small discount for the players in the team . My son comes home from purchasing the shoes and proceeds to tell me that he got questioned about the $100 bill that he used and was questioned about it being fraudulent. They used the pen that's normally used to to detect counterfeit bills and said the color was off and proceeded to take his information. He gave them his school ID as well as his phone number that they asked him for! Needless to say as a parent of course I was upset about the issue. I immediately called the store to which a lady who answered said she was the wife of the owner of the store and was obviously well aware of the incident already because the money was brought to her. She was very rude and talked over me the entire time. There's no doubt in my mind that any parent wouldn't be upset about this. In my opinion if the pen you use doesn't work then get another one. And then all of a sudden she says "I don't think it will be an issue" Well obviously you made it one when he was in the store. As stated before HE'S 17. And I'm sure it was embarrassing for him to be questioned as if he's some type of criminal. They haven't heard the last of me. And I will let other parents on the team as well as the coach know about this incident and will no longer patron their business. They should be ashamed of themselves!! And the wife of the owner needs a lesson in closing her mouth to allow others to speak. Very rude to say the least! read more

This place is amazing. The only place in town that I know offers you the full shoe service experience. In fact, their staff even help you put on the shoes. The staff are all very helpful. I purchased a pair of boots and had some minor problem with one of the shoes. I came back to the store and they were very nice. They apologized and resolved the problem right there. I have no doubt the nostalgia of the days of friendly service are enjoyed by many, but when the effort to go through a "script" overrides a customers needs the sale can not take place. We went to Wilkins because our school had an arrangement to purchase team shoes there. We were rushed for time and walked in telling the associate what shoe we wanted and two sizes we wanted to try on. She immediately started the sales "script" and started to measure my sons foot. I explained we were in a hurry and knew his size, could she just bring those sizes to try on. She told us she had to measure so she knew what size women's shoe to fit him in. She then brought the women's shoes which were extremely tight on his foot. She then tells us that its okay he is just used to wearing shoes that are too large for him. I am now furious, here is a boy who competes in a variety of sports at a national level, who is a two year gold medalist in his state, and she is recommending he wear shoes that will destroy his feet. Not a great idea. What we discover is, they made an agreement with the school to provide the team with shoes and other products however they DID NOT have the merchandise to support this. It seemed to me she was intending to sell us a pair of shoes regardless if they were the proper fit or not. What they need to do is contact the team and let them know that they can not support what is needed so we can purchase somewhere else. Despite the fact we bought a $100 pair of sandals, they refused to let my war vet dad use the washroom. I told the sales person it was an emergency(as I knew their facilities were for employees only) but she didn't seem to care. I actually pleaded with her to get the manager, but she walked away. He ended up soiling his pants because old town has only pay toilets and b4 we could get correct change and locate one, it was too late. I wish I could give a negative star review because that is how strongly I feel about the poor customer service of this establishment. Around 4:58pm, on Saturday the 12th of December, my friend and her three year old daughter were out walking around the walking mall with my four year old son and I. We came up to the store and attempted to open the door to realize it was locked. The sign on the door said their holiday hours, which clearly stated that they were open until 6pm on Saturday. However, no sign in the windows or door stated what time they were closed for a normal Saturday. Due to the fact that we've never been to this store, we figured they would be open until 6pm. The door was locked and there were several kids crowded inside the door. Perhaps one of the children was playing with the door and locked it, I thought to myself. A lady with very short blonde hair opened the door and asked, in a very condescending and rude tone, if there was anyone in the store we were waiting for. I told her that was not the case and proceeded to tell her the sign on the door stated they were open until 6 after she told us they were closed at 5. She looked at us like we had no intelligence and told us that those were their holiday hours. I then asked her why the regular store hours were not on the door. She proceeded to yell into the store at one of the ladies and let her know there was no sign on the door with their regular store hours. Had she have apologized for not having a sign and been sincere all would have been well. Though she didn't seem to feel bad at all for the poor way she treated us. Not only that, but my friend's daughter began trying to walk in the store, like any three year old might do not understanding the situation. The sales clerk began to push her out of the door even though my friend had a hold of her child's hand. First off, a sales clerk should never put their hands on another women's child. Second, the condescending rude tone is something that should not be tolerated by the owner of the store. I'm not sure when this woman started working, or if she simply had a bad day, but I have never experienced such poor character in a saleswomen. My friend and I could not believe the treatment we received. Never will we ever step foot close to this horrible store again. read more
