Being a homeowner means you have a list of things that never ends: upgrades, repairs, and routine…read moremaintenance always keeps us on our toes. This week's task was handling a potential infestation of rodents. Oh joy! Nothing like having your home be a home for unwanted critters, and, well, eww. Roberto showed up on time, even messaging when he was on his way, listened to my concerns, and took a look around our basement. I was relieved to find out that it did not appear as if we had a big problem, or at least as big of a problem like I had feared, and that he would look outside as well. Once outside, Roberto inspected the house and found the likely point of ingress for mice. It made total sense because the gap in the siding coincided with where the soffit for the ductwork is in the basement. He gave me quotes on the services that were available, ranging from quarterly visits to a one-time sealing of the house, and then gave me some ideas on what I could do to handle some things myself. The service charge was $99, and if you sign up for one of their quarterly services or another one of their offerings, then that service charge is rolled into part of the overall fee. I was super-pleased with that part of the arrangement and I look forward to utilizing their services. Very responsive, easy to set an appointment, and a relatively thorough inspection, all in the span of less than an hour. Great experience!

We had a family of yellowjackets decide that the overhang to our front door would be a lovely spot…read moreto move into before winter. My regular pest guys don't mess with hornets, and if they don't, I don't either. Enter Critter Control. This group has good reviews and also came recommended by the other pest group, so it felt like all signs pointed to them. I don't love the whole "fill out this thing on our website for a quote" only to have the convo moved to a game of phone tag that ensued, so I'd recommend just calling them. They were able to get the tech out (Colton) almost right away. He got up on a ladder, slapped some kind of instant-kill dust on them, and hightailed it out. After the dusty corpses fell to the ground, he came back the next day to seal it up and remove the portions of the nest he could reach. So far so good, and I'm hopeful that this was the end of it. It stinks to pay for something like this but it beats the alternative of getting up on a dodgy ladder with a couple dozen angry yellowjackets coming after you. Alternatively, if you leave them or seal them, they'll grow like crazy and maybe even burrow into the house. No bueno! So yeah, I'd recommend this group and will update if this effort didn't take but seems to be all good.

The other company led me to believe it was racoons and were fully planning to dismantle my chimney to get them out. They also told me about some egg in my attic that they just left there and were unable to identify. Colton removed the egg (don't worry, wasn't a snake. Just an old bird egg) and gave me an entire plan for bat prevention in my attic. He came back in August when he said he would to finish the job when the bat babies would be guaranteed to be gone. Great at communicating with me throughout the process. I felt like they were honest and so incredibly helpful. THANK YOU!

Heard a squirrel in my wall and my regular exterminator referred me to a well reviewed wildlife…read moreremoval company (to find them sort by yelp rating). I called this business for quote and he told me his price was $200 for initial inspection plus $75 for every animal caught and plus $75 for every entry point with no maximum or promises. He said typically 3 entry points but often there are several more. Bottom line typical price $575 - but possibly much much more. I have an old house and I don't want to risk 200 for initial inspection only to find out if the completion would have done it for cheaper. If you use this guy I would ask a lot of questions about how his pricing works and get references and make sure he is bonded or insured beyond worker's compensation since he may get on your roof (hopefully with fall protection).
