The pork dishes are my personal favorites, but a good selection of Asian fusion items are on the menu, supplemented by a good number of daily specials. We were pleasantly surprised to find a nice cute Asian/Singaporean/Thai restaurant in Cambria. We visited on Christmas Day evening so it was a little crazy in there. Wild Ginger is a small intimate restaurant and its owner, Deborah, was amazingly patient and nice dealing with all the hectic-ness of hungry people/tourists trying to get food. The food is pretty good although some of our dishes were a little cold. But again, we can't blame them as there were many people that evening. They have Thai curries, fried noodles dishes (Pad Thai and Beef Ho Fun), some rice dishes, even satay for appetizer. We got the roast duck (presentation was awesome and food not too bad), Szechuan tofu, and salt and pepper calamari. This is definitely not your typical super oily Chinese take out place. If you're craving some not-too-bad, healthy Asian food around San Simeon or Cambria, Wild Ginger would definitely fit that purpose. I will visit it just to say hi to Deborah again! read more

We came here for dinner Christmas Eve and Christmas day. There were few places open in town, let alone those that had vegan options. We dined here on Christmas Eve and enjoyed the food. We ordered takeout on Christmas night and had to wait quite a long time until our order was ready. Last year was our first visit and it was just ok - we enjoyed each other's company and didn't notice food so much. This year we (family of 5) noticed the food. Portions felt small, lacking protein- lots of vegetables and starch but lacking shrimp, duck, pork and beef that we ordered. Flavors were suttle and often missing. Food arrived to table less than hot. The beef chow fun tasted spoiled- when we sent it back- I swear it was reworked in the kitchen by washing it, cooking it and sending it back to us. Imagine my delight when we stumbled upon this cozy little gem at the end of the block in charming Cambria. There were twinkly lights in the window a list of enticing specials on the board outside. A big order of potstickers and warming Thai dishes sounded like just the thing after a long drive into town. How did this go so wrong? We found a little table and were promptly served water. We waited patiently for the server, as the place was small and there were a few tables ahead of us. We ordered spring rolls, potstickers, chicken satay and sweet tangy chicken over brown rice. I should have canceled my entire order and beat it around the corner to JJ's Pizza when I saw the waitress take the spring rolls out of a refrigerated case and pop them in the microwave. Imagine left over vegetables from the week sautéed in oil and soy sauce, wrapped in phyllo dough, reheated. The outside tasted like soggy, raw dough while the inside was strangely tough. Strike one. Next came the chicken potstickers. Although as the name would suggest, one would expect to find some chicken inside the overcooked dough, but none was to be detected in the meager filling. They were hot, but greasy and tasteless. Strike two. And now for the intermission portion of the evening. We eagerly awaited the main course, thinking the best was yet to come. Au contraire. We waited for about 45 minutes while the ladies wandered around in the kitchen, certainly not cooking from scratch. We politely asked the waitress how long it would be and she pointed to the potstickers and said, "You just got these appetizers." Implying that was sufficient. Her tone was mildly hostile. Finally, the satay and chicken main arrived. Oh boy. It was plated well, but looks are deceiving. The satay was so disappointing. One bite told us that the thigh meat had been very over marinated and way over cooked. It was rubbery and had similar seasonings to an Oscar Mayer wiener with the suggestion of dollar store peanut butter dipping sauce. Nay, that would have been more tasty. My apologies to Mr. Mayer and his fine weiners. Strike three. The chicken was described on the menu as being "crispy and covered in a sweet tangy sauce." Oh dear. This dish was a crime against all things culinary. The thigh meat chunks of chicken had been battered in something last week, took a quick dip in old oil, and then reheated in the microwave. A sad sauce was dripped over the mess, as if to hid all the indignities. A few green beans were sprinkled around for good measure. The sauce had a distinct chemical after taste, perhaps liquid Tylenol would have been more palatable. In fact, I'm sure it would have been. After spitting out the first, and only bite of that stuff, we told the waitress that this was inedible. Her reaction was well practiced, "Oh, I'm sorry you guys don't like it, but that's okay." Forty five dollars later, we sent back untouched food and I was ticked enough to follow through with this review on my vacation. Beware my fellow diners! I realize that when you go to these small towns all the way out in the middle of no where the laws of capitalism kick in a lot more. In that with a lack of supply, demand goes up. When you're the only place like this in the area, you're able to charge more and of course line your pocket books during the travel season. But I have to say, I'd probably hold off on the cravings if it means I have to deal with mediocre food and service. The place is really small. I mean, tiny. Why even set up a sit in restaurant when you have the smallest space for people to sit and actually eat? You're either back to back with the other table or you're really close to the dessert/glass fridge and cash register. So off the bat, no matter how much cute paintings you hang up, you're not making it much of an inviting atmosphere. Then the food doesn't help any since it was lacking that flavor. I got the wild ginger prawn curry. I have to say, that was not even worth half the price. At just about any other Thai place, you'd get twice the amount for far less on your wallet. There was, like, maybe 4 prawns on that plate. It wasn't tasty or left any impression on my mind. And for $15, the only impression I felt was that I felt like that was a big fat waste of money. Over all, this place is far too small for a restaurant. Work on that first and then deal with the fact that if you can't get the food comparable or even the quality any higher, then you're better off not running a place like this. read more

Things I understand: -Prices in cute coastal areas like Cambria are going to be high, because it costs more to transport items there, and also to help make up profits for the lean months of the off-season. -Tourist areas that particularly cater to an older clientele aren't going to have an abundance of original, creative, or ethnic restaurants. For these two reasons alone I am almost willing to give Wild Ginger a pass. Almost. Our motel gave us a list of menus for restaurants in the area and it was bleak - mostly "Italian" or steak & seafood joints, all at exorbitant prices. Wild Ginger was one of the cheapest places for dinner that wasn't fauxtalian or burgers, and we really didn't feel like dropping $150 on steak for two with the denture set, even if we're inherently skeptical about "pan-anything" foods - which was the problem with the other two restaurants in Cambria. Pan-city. At least "Wild Ginger's" menu stuck primarily to Thai flavors and didn't look overly-ambitious. We went for it. The problems started immediately. The restuarant is tiny, which is fine if you're a cafe, but even though it's "cheap for Cambria" entrees still run between $13-$22, which seems a little odd when you're sitting on a tiny table wedged up against a refrigerator case full of deserts drinking wine out of a tiny Ikea tumbler. The ambiance, while fine for a cafe, seemed a little ridiculous for a place where two entrees, two glasses of wine, and one shared desert run you $75 pre-tip. The other diners seemed very enamored of the owner, who spent a lot of time talking to them. As a result, we were served by a surly teenager. Upon receiving our dishes, my boyfriend realized that his was basically inedible. It was the blandest, saddest dish ever. Soggy brown rice covered by mostly-flavorless greens topped by mushy slices of duck that somehow managed to have not one shred of duck flavor - or any other flavor. My dish, the lobster chile relleno, was tasty enough, not the best chile relleno I've ever had, but satisfying, and served with a nice frisee salad with a great orange vinaigrette and the ubiquitous brown rice, at least this time made happy by cheese from the chile relleno seeping into it. As we quietly discussed whether the boy should just suffer through his dish in silence or give the restaurant a chance to attempt to make things right the waitress came by to refill our water glasses and mumbled something about "Is everything alright," clearly not expecting anything other than a nod as she walked away, but Chris decided to let his unhappiness with the dish be known. Then we finally got the attention of the owner, and not in a good way. She seemed, well, pissed. We weren't demanding they take it back, but if you're going to ask someone how their meal is, you have to expect them to answer honestly, right? To their credit, the owner quickly got a new dish of caramelized Vietnamese prawns to Chris, and didn't charge him for the duck - that is, it wasn't on the bill. But the overtly chilly interaction we had from then on out did kind of cast a pall over the rest of the experience. The prawns were good. Not amazing, not as flavorful as they could have been (and I'm not sure they really understand what caramelized means - it was really just a decent stir-fry). The best dish was probably the Thai garlic-chile chicken wings we had as an appetizer. We also finished with a nice creme brulee. Would I go back here again? I don't know. Given my understandings of the realities of being a tourist on the coast, essentially a captive audience, I'd say "possibly." But being an Oakland resident, paying nearly $100 for blah-to-above-average Asian food is really painful - I'd rather just wait until I was home and go chow down at Sabuy Sabuy for less than half the price. Or I might happily eat here at "lunchtime" prices as opposed to dinner prices. But given what we got, it's hard to recommend, which was bizarre given how many raves we'd heard about it on the internet and in person. I probably would have coughed up one more star had the owner/waitress actually acted professionally in trying to create a real nice restaurant experience. Judging by the other reviews, this is a consistent problem. If the owner is going to be surly, maybe she shouldn't hang out front of house? read more

I have eaten here a total of three times. Mostly because the place is tiny and packed and not very friendly feeling. If you are with a local that drops money in there every week and the brusque owners knows them, then they cater to you. If you are just a poor soul wandering in on your own without the local looking for some warm food look out there is a good chance they are not going to give a hoot about you. We open for dinner at 5' No 'I'm sorry , no smile no customer service. We felt a little rebuffed and ackward to say the least since there were people eating there. Here is a tip for you Wild Ginger from someone who has been in the Customer Service Industry for over 20 years, next time either A: Close your doors and hang the NOT OPEN sign on it even if the place is packed B: Start your sentence with a SMILE and a " I'm sorry we are not open right now but if you want to come back for dinner ( which costs more money) I will throw in a free appetizer" C; Or heck just a :" Im sorry we are closed' and ACT like you care. This is an extremely small restaurant. So it was really hard to grab a seat even though there was not a lot of people. The owner was very discerning towards younger age group. I came here with my boyfriend and we looked really young. When we were greeted by the owner, she did not pay much attention or tell us any information about the wait and basically wanted us to wait outside. After waiting for half an hour, we saw a party leave so we came in thinking we had a seat. Then we had to leave the restaurant again because she informed us that we had 2 parties before us. In the end, we waited a little over an hour just to get our food to go. My boyfriend ordered the special Pork Pot Roast. This was not too bad. There were some flavors, but nothing too interesting. It is better than the roasted duck they have, which lacks a lot of flavor. All there is to the roast duck was the hoisin sauce that they had on the side. Overall, this was a pricey Asian cuisine. I usually don't like to write scathing reviews, but we REALLY didn't like this place. We initially decided to come here because we had seen reviews in the local advertisements saying this was one of the top restaurants in the city, but we felt it was far from that. We ordered the soup of the day, spring roll, sweet and sour tofu, chicken curry and didn't like and didn't like any of it. The food wasn't very warm and also did not taste anything like we were expecting, and we generally like different Asian cuisines. It wasn't even the kind of food that was OK but you could finish- we simply didn't like it at all and didn't even want to pack it to go. We probably had a few bites of each of our dishes, and we told the waiter that we were not at all satisfied with the food. We went to this restaurant on the advice of a friend who loves it. I don't know why he does. It is terrible. The kambocha squash soup was tepid and had an unappetizingly dirty flavor. It was a disaster. Spring rolls had a nice filling but were wrapped in phyllo dough, which turned them into a gummy mouthful. Tofu satay was one of the worst dishes I have ever had anywhere. A handful of deep fried tofu was placed upon undercooked spinach. The peanut sauce was flavorless, and the portion was pitifully small. It was edible with the addition of soy sauce and some red chile. With three beers the bill was 48 dollars. With tip, we were out over $50 for the worst meal we eve ever had. The owner was very nice, and the restaurant was full of happy customers. We wanted a light lunch on our way to San Francisco, so we didn't order any of the specials. They may have been better, but if a restaurant fails with the simplest dishes, how can they succeed with the more complex? I can in no way recommend this restaurant. We ate dinner at Greens in San Francisco that night. After I told the waiter of our terrible lunch, he comped us with their kambocha/parsnip soup with apple compote and creme fraiche. It was superb. Terrible... I almost never leave reviews, especially negatives ones, but we are actually angry about the lack of taste, quality, and customer service from this place. This restaurant is lucky to be the only "Asian Fusion" option around because the lack of comparison is its saving grace. The food was extremely bland, flavorless, poorly prepared, and overpriced especially for its unethically small portions. We ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp that had corn, squash, broccoli, string beans?? (all which are Never typically in Pad Thai) and had the blandest most lackluster taste ever... We also got the sesame chicken which literally had about 8-9 small cuts of chicken, in top of way too much rice, strawberries, and cantaloupe??? The cream cheese wontons had almost Zero cream cheese in them and were served with a bunch of strawberries and blueberries?? This restaurant has no idea what they are doing, but have no problem charging way too much for the most below-mediocre food we've ever eaten. What a let down, waste of money ($50 for an appetizer and 2 "entrees" that were more like lunch special sizes), and waste of our last dinner in town on vacation. While I love Cambria, I haven't been overly impressed with the food overall. This place was a nice change. Pros: Service: A lot of people in there seemed to know the owner well and she interacted with them in a friendly manner. She also came to check on my wife and I personally, which was nice. The waitress/hostess was also extremely nice and attentive. I can't complain one bit about the service. Dinner: I had the Vietnamese BBQ Pork and loved it. The pork was sweet, the rice noodles were good and the greens and veggies and little garnishes were all good. I'd eat it again should I wind up in Cambria again, although the Hunan Beef looked tempting. Cons: Appetizer: I wasn't in love with the Salt and Pepper Calamari. Although, old shoe leather would probably taste good in the sauce that came with it. This is all that kept this place from 5 stars. Also: This place can seat like... maybe 20 people max. It was cold outside and we ordered a soup that was served in a few minutes. The food were ordered were small, but the quality, and the service was very good. Had some kind of paste sauce that was suppose to be their version of a peanut sauce....not even close. My husband had a noodle and beef dish for $17 and he had to add quite a bit of soy sauce to the dish to give it some kind of flavor. Paid $9 for a shot glass of wine....they literally served it in a small water glass. I don't mind that so much but don't charge me $9. We've eaten Thai food EVERYWHERE...from the best in San Diego, SF and throughout Thai Land, this was by far the worst for how much you get and how much you pay. read more

UPDATE 5/08: I ate at Wild Ginger on my last night in town on this year's vacation and had a much better meal than I did last year. Now it's a "definitely would go back." I had the smoked salmon cream cheese wontons (tasty and evil) and the Hunan Beef, which somewhat reminded me of shaking beef, except it was $15 instead of $25 like I'm used to in the Bay Area. Beef tenderloin in a black-bean-and-something sauce with broccoli, asparagus and shiitake mushrooms -- tasty! I had a pear sorbet for dessert, which was good, though the texture was more like a granita than a sorbet -- possibly a teeny bit refrozen. Will be back next year, I'm sure! It was a toss-up between going to Robin's and going here, but Chowhound says the chef used to be the chef at Robin's and this place is better, so I went here. I had two specials -- Vietnamese spring rolls (pork & vegetables, deep-fried) and then pork tenderloin w/peanut sauce. The spring rolls were good, and were served with a little pile of dried cranberries on the side which worked perfectly after the spicy dipping sauce. The pork tenderloin was just OK -- nothing earthshattering, though the jicama salad it came with was good. The dessert was totally redeeming, though. I fancy myself a good amateur baker (well, you'll have to ask the people at the office if that's true or not) and a lot of the time I find myself thinking I shouldn't bother ordering dessert out because I can make better at home. However, when I got my piece of key lime cheesecake with whipped sour cream/key lime topping and boysenberry drizzle, it was absolutely good enough to rival one of my cheesecake creations. (Ahem.) Like others, we've been to Cambria many times but never tried this restaurant. What a delicious gem. The food was delicious and unusually diverse, and we're from food mecca-the SF bay area. Everything we ordered was spot on. I strongly recommend you finish the meal with the owner's scrumptious sorbet. My wife had the blood orange, and I had the blackberry. I too was told when I asked the owner who was the server what to order-"everything is good." She was very helpful in helping us decide on what to order after we made the effort to be friendly. My fiancé and I got engaged in Big Sur earlier in the day and had dinner at wild ginger. The food was delicious. My fiancé got the skewered bbq chicken and I got the vegetarian Thai basil tofu which was REALLY good. They gave us free dessert because of our special day and I had the most delicious blackberry mango crumble I have ever had. I wanted to love Wild Ginger; good Asian fusion is hard to come by on the Central Coast, much less Cambria. I thought it was solid and worth a try. The menu is so all over the place that I'm reluctant to hand down a final verdict and recommend that you try it out yourself. THE GOOD: Really interesting menu! There's some straight-up Thai and some interesting blended items. The Roasted Fig Salad was lovely with perfectly plump figs and a light vinaigrette. Perhaps there could have been more figs on the salad, though. The main dish, the Seafood Curry Noodles, was in a killer broth; while the broth was indisputably kick-ass, the noodles were ho-hum and there wasn't that much seafood. THE BAD: the House Salad doesn't come with cheese, and the service left something to be desired. Our server didn't even go through the specials, and when I asked she couldn't remember them. I really shouldn't have a better command of the specials than the server after glancing at the sign (albeit furtively) for like, five seconds. THE BOTTOM LINE: There were some other items on the menu that looked really good and that were probably better than the stuff we ordered. I'm guessing the more traditional Asia stuff was better. I'd give Wild Ginger a try, but perhaps ask the staff what their best dishes are, or which dishes are the most popular. read more

Ordered beef chow fun and it was very tasty. Good mix of vegetables and the beef was tender. Added chili and it was very good.
