I had a very disappointing experience at Petco. I even asked if it was okay not to join, and the employee told me it was. After my transaction was completed, she then rudely told me that my decision not to join the rewards program directly counted against her. I found this extremely frustrating because she waited until after I had paid to tell me, when there was nothing I could do about it. If I had known that my decision would negatively affect her, I would have been happy to create an account if she had simply explained the situation upfront. Instead, the way it was handled left me feeling uncomfortable and as though I had done something wrong for simply declining a rewards program. Customer service should involve clear and respectful communication, and this situation was handled poorly. I left the store with a bad feeling and, unfortunately, I will not be coming back.
