(To their credit, the restoration of the building is impressive.) The only place you can go inside to see them make chocolate is the retail store across the street. If you find yourself in Litiz, PA, and enjoy chocolate , Wilbur is literally right around the block from Julis Sturgis Pretzel shop. This was my second visit through Litiz, PA and was glad to have had time to stop in. Wilbur factory, located across the street is no longer in operation , since 2016. The factory was turned into a hotel with restaurants in 2019. The hotel esthetics were kept from the factory, with a few other artifacts, the walk across the street is highly recommended. Wilbur , chocolate shop simply gourmet since 1884. Their signature , is their Wilbur buds, which when I first tried them thought were for baking. Wow, was I wrong, the helpful clerk told me they were for eating. Wilbur buds reminded me of Hershey kisses, but 100 percent better, based on ones palet. My friend and I spent the afternoon in Lititz and she said we needed to stop in to Wilbur Chocolate. She said it was the original chocolate company in the area that predated Hershey. They offered free samples of their buds, which resembled Hershey's Kisses. I wasn't that impressed by the milk chocolate bud, as it didn't really melt in my mouth as I expected it to. Their packaged items were pretty pricey and there were not a lot of options to buy smaller sized bags or boxes. I ended up getting a milk chocolate pretzel, which was nothing special, and a milk chocolate covered oreo with Carmel, that was really good. The store does have windows where you can watch the candy being made, but as we visited on a Sunday, there was no one working. This is another great stop in the Lancaster county area. Lititz is such a cute little town. This historic chocolate shop has been around since 1884. They created the Wilbur Bud, which is a drop of chocolate that looks pretty much just like a Hershey kiss. Well, Milton Hershey would copy the bud and package it as the Hershey Kiss. Wilbur tried to go after Hershey but didn't win and thus, the Hershey Kiss is the well-known chocolate around the world. But you know what? They have nothing on the taste of the Wilbur Bud. The shop has a wide variety of chocolate, gummies and candies. But my favorite part? The all-you-can-sample Wilbur Buds. Not gonna lie, I ended up getting more than I probably would have since they had the samples! Another big hit? The chocolate peanut butter squares. I have been doing mail order for 15 years with Wilbur, I have sent many friends their chocolate for Christmas gifts. However, I have never been to the Mecca- their store in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Finally, last year, I found myself in Lititz and made the trek to the store after driving past a few times. It was a lot smaller than I expected, but boy, do they pack the shelves with their chocolate goodness! It was great to see them making chocolate, and while I realize that this is not the main factory, the fact they make some of the candies here is awesome as you get to watch the creative process. My Husband saw this place on Instagram and it came highly recommend. They have a free sample table where you can sample some of their Chocolates. It's a quaint little shop with plenty of options and choice of chocolates, specialty chocolates and chocolate covered anything you want. We sure do, so we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Wilbur Chocolates. Old man Wilbur was quite the chocolate entrepreneur and was already in the business pre-1900 in Philadelphia. He tinkered with a chocolate mold machine and started popping out individual chocolates shaped like flower buds way back in 1894. Today, their Lititz store is a chocolate lover's dream with chocolates of every description on display. We picked up a box of Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Cherry Cordials and a bag of Sweet and Salty Bark. Both were great, especially the Cherry Cordials which sure as hell didn't taste like they were sugar free ! If you are ever in the area, be sure to visit the sweet little town of Lititz, and the extra sweet delights you'll find inside the Wilbur Chocolates shop. read more

I hadn't heard of Wilbur Chocolates before, but they have a history dating back to the 1800s. The original factory and museum in Lititz have closed down in recent years and been converted into condos and a Hilton hotel property. However, they've opened up a retail store right across the street from the former factory. It's said that they're the original creators or the chocolate bud, which Hershey later copied as Hershey's Kisses. They have a free sampling station set up near the entrance of the store where you can try their milk chocolate buds. They are a bit richer and fancier version of the Hershey's Kiss...perhaps a slightly more premium chocolate. The retail store has all kinds of chocolate-related goodies, and while it wasn't exactly cheap, I picked up a sampling of goodies to try out and share with others. While I doubt Wilbur Chocolates will ever reach the prominence of Hershey's, it's a great historical chocolatier and the perfect place to stop by in the small and charming town of Lititz for those who appreciate chocolate. read more

My husband and I felt compelled to visit the chocolate store and to splurge. We received a friendly greeting and we were offered a shopping bag which of course we managed to fill with impulse purchases. The most egregious example of greed in all of Lititz has got to be Wilbur Chocolates. Nearly $8 for about eleven potato chips drizzled with some chocolate! Other then that, the chocolate is pretty good. The White Chocolate Bark is rich and creamy; it's really good. All I could think about while eating the chocolate I got here was, every bite better be amazing for these prices. The price sticks out like such a sore thumb it is impossible to ignore. It's almost as if Willy Wonka made a mistake by giving his factory to Charlie, who in turned raised the prices to increase profit without doing anything to justify the costs. I want to start off that I really miss the ollllld location! They used to be in the red brick building across the street that now houses a hotel and restaurants. The last few times, we took the tour in the old building. They sadly do not have that anymore.. They are now in a brand new building across the street in the former Freeze and Friz, which sadly I probably have never been into either. They still do some stuff on the new site... We went during covid, and they had a max of 20 people in the store at 1 time. They did a great job of this! It was fun watching them package some items behind the glasss. The store is very modern, very clean, very neat and very organized! They have tons of chocolate options, and they are arranged in very locigal ways. Chocolate covered potato chips? Dark on top, milk in the middle, white on the bottom for the most part. It also felt a tad bit crowded for it being 20 people max! Amazing selection over all! From their buds to hot cocoa, from dipped pretzels to dipped fruit pieces! Plenty to choose from! We also got a super cute onesie for our little one coming soon. Their chocolate is delicious, and they created the buds before Hershey created the kiss! Plus their chocolate tastes better also... All in all, worth the visit! So as I've referenced in many prior rants, I am not a chocolate person by a longshot so in a way the idea of me suggesting to the family to make a pit stop here is hilarious. That would be like Trump one day saying that he wants to chair some kind of council on Ethnic...I'll stop there. We were walking around the town a bit so we didn't use their parking lot which was a good things because it was packed. Oddly, the inside of the store while busy, was not that busy even though it was a Saturday. My first impression was that I wish I could have seen the old building across the street when it was in action because from the pictures that place looked like a time capsule of history. Instead, that building is going to become hipster heaven with "luxury apartments", lofts and a boutique hotel which is Latin for expensive. In it's place we get the current nice but highly nondescript HQ. My first impression was very interesting. On the satellite radio they had 80's playing quite loud and it was nice to watch two older women working the chocolate molds while Ratt and Oingo Boingo were playing. I was sure that any moment they were going to Bark at the Moon while waiting for Perry Como and Mel Torme to come back on. I digress. As for the chocolate, I don't know. I didn't have any. Compared to Hershey's it's certainly pricey and unlike Hershey they don't have the different flavor varieties because I think each place isn't exactly competing for the same consumer dollars. But it works. Brief tangent: Jim B.'s review references Wilbur getting bought by Hershey and that's not true. They were bought by Cargill who made the call to close the old factory across the street and move production to other more modern facilities. Also a lot of other prior reviews reference free samples and I guess that must have gone away with the old building because two Saturdays ago there were no samples that I saw in the almost thirty minutes we were in the store.
