I go to Wiki Wiki a lot for lunch. It is in Dekalb across from the sushi place. It's order at the counter, as all of the restaurants in Dekalb are. There is a high top table for standing if you want to eat there, but it's small. The food is prepared pretty quickly. I usually get the salmon poke bowl, which is good. I've also had the shrimp and kani poke bowl, which has a bit too much spicy sauce on it. I also like the macaroni salad. Wiki Wiki is a solid option in Dekalb. I would recommend. read more

Finally got to try Wiki Wiki after eyeing it for a while. It's part of the Dekalb Market Hall, and sure is an interesting option; Korean Hawaiian. I was specifically in the mood for a poke bowl, so I went with their Wasabi Shoyu Salmon bowl. That salmon might not look intimidating but trust, the wasabi is there and every few bites takes you aback (in a good way, of course). Serving size was solid and ratios were great. We had a show at the Paramount a block away and I thought Dekalb Market would be a great spot to have dinner since we could all pick different things. Scanned the menu, they have a selection of rice bowl dishes which would be topped off with poke or grilled meats, along with ramen! We got the classic Shoyu Tuna Poke bowl and the Grilled Chicken Mixed plate- because Wiki Wiki was busy busy, it took about 10 min or so to get our order. But once we did... wow! The sauce for the poke bowl was tasty (a little too much, but maybe we can ask for the sauce on the side next time?) with pretty good portions. The grilled chicken was my favorite though- the dark meat was cooked to perfection and was juicy and flavorful. I chose kimchi as my side (over cole slaw) and it added a great kick to the bowl. Got two Poke bowl that was about 40ish dollars total. We got the arugula in replacement of rice and also tipped. Poke bowl was mediocre. Given the price, I expected to see a bit more portions of fish but I think there were only 5-6 tiny pieces. It was also way too saucy. We ended up not finishing it towards the end not bc we were full, but because the arugula was too soaked in the sauce and got too salty. Would only go again if I'm really really really craving a poke bowl and there are any other good close-by options. read more

Food halls are always a tough decision to pick which spot, but with kimchi options and Korean cuisine, I couldn't resist. The workers were fast in making our order. They were also super friendly and did not hesitate to give me any utensils or napkins, which I always appreciate! I ordered the Miso Aioli Kimchi Salmon Poke Bowl ($14) and my boyfriend got the Bulgoki Bibimbob ($14). At first, I was disappointed in the rice to ingredients ratio. But it ended up being just right. I also loved how the poke wasn't drenched in sauce, as I wasn't in the mood for heavy. Although I had better poke elsewhere, I am grateful they add kimchi to the mix. From the bites I had, the Bulgoki Bibimbob tasted kind of salty with hints of spiciness, but I love how the marinated beef tasted. Don't expect the typical bibimbap as they have different ingredients and it came premixed, but nevertheless, not bad! The pricing is very on par with the Food Hall, but if I must say so myself, definitely overpriced. One of my favorite vendors in this food hall! Hawaiian food is kind of hard to come by in NYC so I'm really glad this spot exists. I love the Grilled Chicken Mixed Plate (w/ rice, mac salad and cole slaw). The Classic Hawaiian Shoyu Tuna Poke bowl is pretty good too, and I love that they offer it in smaller cup form. While I know this is ostensibly a poke spot, I dare to be different (also I've been a little poke'd out lately): I rocked the grilled chicken plate. I find it slightly strange that grilled chicken comes in at $1 more than spicy pork or bulgogi bibimbap, but all I know is that it was delicious. Just a pretty simple plate of grilled chicken with seriously excellent flavor, mac salad, and slaw over rice (brown upon request). It's kind of like a Hawaiian garbage plate, for my Western New York brethren, but decently healthy overall and not disgusting in the least.* They've also got poke, obviously, and ramen for those of you in need of some noods, but personally, I liked my plate so much that I'm not sure if I want to go with anything else just yet. Ordered delivery from here and pretty mixed feelings about the items. Poke ($14) - it comes at a decent size, with rice, avocado, seaweed salad, carrots and cucumber, furikake, and tuna. It was super dry though and I had to add a lot my own sauces on top of the provided soy sauce to make it taste good. Also, there were only a few pieces of fish on top. Wish it had roe on top and more flavor. Grilled Chicken Hawaiian Mixed plate ($14) - this was soooo delicious. The macaroni salad and coleslaw had the perfect amount of Mayo and weren't too wet. I really wanted to like wiki wiki but the ramen just didn't cut it. I like spicy food but this ramen is just too oily. The pork slices were tender and portions were good. But the soup base was terrible. It was just greasy without rich flavors that I expect from ramen broth. No umani flavors at all. The ramen noodles were not chewy or bouncy. Had dinner at Wiki Wiki on Tuesday evening. A very disappointing poke bowl that was not fresh enough and way too expensive for so little fish, won't have me returning. Quality: Grabbed dinner at Wiki Wiki prior to seeing a movie upstairs. I went with the Chili Aioli Tuna Poke. All the bowls come with rice with scallion, onion, cabbage, seaweed salad, carrot, cumber, nori, and avocado. On top they put tuna and the sauce, and I also added on tamago. What I got was extremely disappointing. Freshness is key for poke and I did not get that impression from this bowl, the avocado was turning brown and the eggs were very off. There was also next to no tuna. I had four small chunks in the entire bowl, which is absurd. I did like the chili aioli sauce, but that does not make up for poke failing on all other levels. Quantity: The bowl size was pretty standard for poke, but where was the fish. Value: $15 for the Chili Aioli Tuna. Ambiance: Wiki Wiki is located in Dekalb Market Hall in the basement of City Point mall in Brooklyn. It is towards the middle of the space and occupies one of the smaller stalls. They don't have any direct seating, but had a leaning rail across the way. I grabbed my food and brought it to one of the tables in the corner area. Crowd: About five people waiting for food at the same time as me. Seemed like a decent flow and drew a fair amount of attention in the busy hall. Service: They were very efficient. The tofu and mushroom poke bowl had a good portion of bibim sauce (sweet and mildly spicy) tofu and juicy portabello mushroom-- delicious! The avocado i got was a little underripe, but not a huge complaint. Had a great ratio of rice to salad greens so it was filling but also light. The greens added an element of freshness and crunch, and the sushi ginger added a great pickled accent (I love sushi ginger). All in all probably the best vegan option available in the market unless you go in to Trader Joe's to get a pre packed little meal or something. read more

So what's your opinion of Hawaiian food? Well, I hope the first thing that comes out of your piehole does not start with the word "poke". Poke has turned into this food fad in the past 5 years, rivaling cupcakes, cold brew, froyo-on-tap, avocado toast and ice cream rolls. The poke vendors can feed you lines like how it's a traditional Hawaiian food, but the oldschool poke is made with reef fish, sea salt, limu (the local seaweeds) and crushed candlenuts. The modern poke as we know it...is invented in the 1970s by Hawaiian chefs like Sam Choi, using sushi-grade tuna caught far from the islands, with ingredients like sesame oil, shoyu and nori. It's one of those "fusion" things that the largest ethnicity in Hawaii (the Japanese) contribute back into their local food narrative. Note that poke served here is not the same poke as the ones back in Hawaii. Everyday poke in Hawaii is not made at home as it is cheaper buying it from local supermarkets like Foodland. Their pokes are pre-marinated, previously frozen and cut small so the flavors penetrate. Hit their poke counter, buy it by the pound ($12-15), ask for a bowl, 2 scoops on top of some rice ($6-7 for a large bowl). In the touristy areas like Waikiki you get tourists who thinks it's beneath them to get supermarket poke, so they go into places where they get theirs made "fresh". Because it's fresh, it doesn't have that depth of flavor and texture of the supermarket tub marinated stuff. I don't order poke outside of Hawaii, simply because it just doesn't taste the same. There is also the sneaking suspicion that the poke vendors themselves didn't as much as spent a few weeks in Honolulu researching the menu or getting local culture right - a bunch of Chinese vendors jumping on the culinary bandwagon and letting basic bitches throw crap like kale and Dole pineapple chunks (from Honduras?!) on it (c'mon, really? What's next? Ketchup?!). Every Chinese-run poke joint in NYC want to pretend that they are straight-outta-Kalihi, but quick inspection will tell you that they are wannabes. The very soul and essence of modern popular Hawaiian cuisine is not Poke - it is the plate lunch. Plate lunch is the Hawaiian version of protein-and-two served to plantation workers back in the day with stuff like kalua pork, spam, fried chicken or fish, 2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad - and the macaroni salad is usually salty without much in terms of vegetables. Why? Ever paid $4 for a head of lettuce, or $3 for cabbage? Produce are flown in from mainland, or grown in hot houses on the big island, and therefore expensive. Is the food good at Wiki-Wiki? Eh, let me put it this way...it's not Hawaiian as you might think. Wiki wiki is the Hawaiian for "speedy" - if you have been to Honolulu airport, the shuttle bus carrying passengers to the various terminals is called...the wiki wiki shuttle. This restaurant isn't exactly a fast takeout, so the name chosen is already odd. There is the question of all the missing hallmarks of Hawaiian plate lunch joints...where's the Loco Moco? (Loco moco is a hamburger patty with rice covered with gravy, mac salad and an egg on top) What about an attempt at Kuhuku Garlic Shrimp (arguably the most popular item on the north shore of Oahu)? Long rice? Saimin (a uniquely Hawaiian noodle soup that is not-quite ramen)? Why are there cabbage on the tangy mac salad? Eh, never mind. Of course, authenticity doesn't guarantee success. L&L Barbecue (Honolulu's local chain) ran a few stores in NYC back in the early 2010s, and they got their asses handed to them. Why? they tried to serve up their low-rent plate lunches but without distinguishing marks versus fares offered at the local Chinese takeout joints. The spicy pork plate lunch at Wiki Wiki isn't bad...per-se. The plate lunch is served on a takeout bowl with rice underneath, your protein on the side and garnished with Mac and slaw, which is a nice touch. The protein is well marinated and comes with little bits of caramelized garlic that gives off the right flavors. It's good eats but don't mistake this for being "Hawaiian". I understand that the Albee square food hall is an expensive place overrun with overcompensated Millenials who have a generally shallow understanding of foodways. Given that, charging $15 for something that is typically $9 back in Hawaii...isn't ridiculous. Just don't tell your friends that this is authentically Hawaiian...because it isn't. That's not entirely a bad thing, but you are also missing out on a bunch of other good eats not offered here. read more

Wiki Wiki is one of the OG DeKalb Market vendors. They started with poke and spam musubi, but have also branched out to ramen and bimbimbap. Personally, I think their poke is good but tends to be overdressed (ask them to go easy on the sauce!) The ramen is fair, but if you're looking for a great bowl, Menya Jiro is a few blocks away. The bimbimbap is good and tastes great, but it isn't classic picture perfect bimbimbap where each ingredient is cooked separately. Given the dearth of Korean food in the area, I consider it a pretty decent substitute for K-town. Staff are good. Prices are fair considering how much food you get, but it's not a cheap lunch. read more

I came here on Monday December 9, 2019, a cool and rainy day perfect to partake in ramen. The lunch special is a bit deceiving to me because it makes it seem like you are getting something more than just your ramen. If you want a bottle of water with the ramen it is an extra $1 on the lunch special menu. The menu really does not need to mention the water if it is not a part of the lunch special price of $11- I would have got a different ramen had I know there wasn't a deal to be had (i.e. ramen and water). This place is located in the Dekalb Market so it is pricey for what you get. The ramen goes from $11 (lunch special price) to about $15. If you want an egg with your ramen it is an extra $1. The ramen was tasty. I got the one made with pork belly (note there were only two pieces of pork belly in the whole thing) . The service was good. The food was prepared in an appropriate amount of time and it was pipping hot! The guy at the counter answered all of my questions without an attitude or annoyance. Had to call out from work, I went back to get a refund because of the incident and Hassan the cashier made a joke about me coming back the next day ! This is based solely on the Spam Musubi. Being an islander I was excited to see this place on the east coast. I was in Brooklyn with my wife visiting friends and we stopped by the Dekalb food hall for snacks before our train back home. The price for a spam musubi here is $3.50. Pretty pricey if you ask me but it is Brooklyn and in a fancy food hall. Spam musubi is a good snack so I decided to get it anyway. Now to the musubi. It's made to order so I was hype about that. I saw them throw the spam on the grill and I got even more excited. When I opened it, it looked like your typical spam musubi. When I bit into I was very disappointed. All it was is the Nori wrap, rice, and spam. It was very very bland. The typical spam musubi is all those things and maybe some teriyaki sauce, sometimes furikake. It was just very dry and basic. In Hawaii you can get pre made musubi at Foodland for 2 dollars that's way better. Even other places I've been to has had some sort of sauce so it's not bland. When I see a Hawaiian place, I feel if you have good musubi then you have bomb food. Maybe their saimin, mixed plates, or other stuff is good but it's skeptical to me if the musubi is just meh. When I visit again I'll be open to try it again but with other options in that food hall it be hard not to want to try other things. read more
