Used to be my go-to spot for coffee and breakfast sandwich but quality & quantity has decreased over the past year. I continued to give it a chance until they updated their menu board and completely removed prices from their menu a month ago, while the price has increased. That just feels wrong. It's ok for coffee, and the service is friendly. That's the star. But the food is really bad. And while there's lots of seating and power outlets for charging, they're mostly unused. Why? This is a business in a state of decay. About a decade ago, this would have been pretty posh. But now the chairs are worn, the walls need paint, the signage that says, "Crabby Coffee" is literally falling off the wall. The chalkboard "specials" sign has been erased and rewritten so many times, the margins are caked with chalk dust, and apparently the employees who write the specials don't even notice that the sign reads "Coffee of the Day" at the top; immediately under this they wrote: "Roast beef and pepper jack with brown gravy...". Unless that IS the coffee of the day. Ew. Then there's the "atmosphere "... There was a tv blasting the news at a volume just over comfortable conversation level, and a group of older people napping or reading in the area around it, like campers around a fire (and of course, that requisite "one guy" who must have an even louder conversation with the television, barking an endless nonsensical commentary regarding anything on the screen that he disagrees with, which is, evidently, everything). This group occupies the only comfortable seating in the main area. Anyone doing work or wanting less noise is exiled to the far reaches of the space, away from this bunch. It wouldn't take much to reclaim this cafe from the dust heap. First: lose the TV. Then, re-focus on food quality and do a light remodel, followed with promotions aimed at folks who need a place to work remotely, like entrepreneurs, students and businesspeople. But I'm not sure the impetus is there...nor the required customer demographic. It might not be their fault- maybe these are the only customers they can attract. I mean: There's a reason they offer three kinds of soup. A local group of old folks have seized this cafe as their personal social perch, perhaps because the other local cafes (that actually need to turn tables) asked them to move on. I don't know. Although I believe everyone should have somewhere to go and hang out, no matter their age, this particular group is very unwelcoming, appraising anyone that comes through the door and looking askance at those who dare venture close to their occupied territory. It's killing this business dead. Not even vaguely recommended unless you've no other place to go. Or you like hanging out with the "get off my lawn" crowd. read more

So, my dad and I go in and I order one of their specialty drinks, "ginormous, iced..." and my dad orders a coffee of the day. They claim they're out of the coffee of the day, but they can make him an Americano. Things happen, but if you're a coffee store that sells coffee (including in the bag), shouldn't you switch the coffee of the day to one you have? And why would you run out? Or, if you're low, why would you name that the coffee of the day? It just seemed ridiculous. No problem getting me a weird flavored drink, but Dad can't get their plain old black coffee of the day? That makes no practical sense. We wait for the drinks. She puts them both up on the counter, but mine was made hot. And so I say, "This was supposed to be iced." She says, "I didn't hear that," and looked at me in a way that implied that I hadn't asked for it iced. It's July. I asked for it iced. Not only that, but I only drink coffee that is, at the most, 100 degrees (barely warm) so I rarely order non-cold drinks. Anyhow, I get Dad's coffee and take it to him. He asks where mine is, and I said they made it hot. He says, "You asked for it iced." I know this, of course, but it's nice that SOMEONE heard what I ordered. He tastes his, and it's awful. We went to get creamer to put it in, but there was none out by the sugar and what-not. We gave up. Dad ended up throwing his $3 (or whatever) Americano out in the trash can when we left. It was that bad. When I got mine, I said "Thank you" in a genuine way. The chick didn't look at me. She said "yeah" in a very "you're an inconvenience" or in a "I didn't get it wrong; you did" tone as she didn't look at me and walked away. I was horrified by that response. Horrified. My dad didn't tip when we ordered. After he stepped away, I put a buck in their tip jar. I wish I'd snatched it back. That woman doesn't deserve my tips. She took the job. She should do it well. We all make mistakes. So she hears coffee orders all day long and missed my "iced." That happens. It's not a big deal. But customer service is essential. Another chick smiled and said thanks when I gave that tip, but the barista who helped us was NOT a help. She, frankly, was a bitch. I don't mind a mistake, but I mind an attitude, big time. That crappy customer service, coupled with the bad Americano and running out of the coffee of the day (!) means we will NEVER go back. I'd rather wait in line for ages at the Whidbey Coffee drive-thru. All day I'd rather wait. May the Wifire Coffee Bar be wiped off the island. The set-up with the telecom company is pretty cool. But the coffee shop ruins the concept. And that one chick? She should definitely be voted off the island. Yuck. Just thinking about her attitude makes me glare. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places on the island. No longer. Once again, there has been a change in managers, and not for the better. It seems that no one is happy there, and the staff turnover is appalling. They recently had two new employees just walk out over the treatment they got. It's now run like a hostile Starbuck's instead of a neighborhood hang-out. Get your coffee, and get out. The food has gotten skimpier, the choices fewer, and the overall attitude is "We're doing you a favor for being here." I really don't need the manager rolling her eyes at me for asking for my scone to be warmed up. Excuuuuuuse me. Payless has better coffee, better service, and at less than half the price. The newest addition to the Freeland coffee scene, Wifire Cafe has a modern, clean look, and is part of the impressive new structure put up by Whidbey Telephone (an odd title with the word Experience in it!). My drip was fine, but where it got interesting - in a not too good way - was when I was doctoring it. The cream and sugar routine. But this experience was anything but routine, as every time I tried to complete the process, I was in someone's way. Two women were trying to return their dishes to the bus tub. I was in their way. When I moved to give them access, I was blocking a guy's access to the trash receptacle. It got worse when we all realized that all four of us were in the way of a server who needed to walk through this little crowd to serve her lattes! Thankfully, no one was also trying to access drinking water, which we were all blocking, as well. So - high points for a beautiful building, low points for effective use of space. I hope for Whidbey Telephone's sake that the rest of this expensive building is thought out better than this portion is. read more

Its part of the Whitbey telephone company building so it looks like a coffee bar for their staff or something. I was impressed by the good coffee even if it was a bit expensive. After coming in two days in a row they asked me if I wanted a frequent buyer card. I had to break it to them I was only visiting. I would highly recommend this place for a stop over. Fast, easy (even electric vehicle) parking; fast, free Wi-Fi; and great blended drinks? It doesn't have the ambiance of South Whidbey Commons in Langley, but it does have the coffeehouse culture and people bustling in and out. The best one can hope for in Freeland! (I wasn't a fan of the hot drinks as much as the blended ones, and yes, the logistics of condiments and trash hasn't been the best, but five stars for the blended drinks -- a decaf mocha is so crazy decadent there! -- location, and atmosphere.) read more

I love WiFire so much. Apparently they make all of there syrups and sauces themselves. Their salted chocolate hot chocolate is my regular order, along with their grilled cheese panini. They have a lovely selection of treats and healthier foods, and they've always been happy to try a new recipe for a drink when a customer wants something new. My mother wanted to substitute rice milk for something and add a different ingredient, and they were totally game. The wifi is always super fast, and the TVs are usually showing something good, like a cooking show or Pirates of the Caribbean. Friendly baristas and a comfy place to hang out, either in a cozy chair by the fire, booth table against the wall, or by an outlet at the bar by the window. read more

When a manager has banned a Disabled Veteran from the coffee house that they manage because the Veteran challenged the manager for calling her staff names and treating them with disrespect and then lying about it, it makes you wonder why that manager still has a job. A bad manager can take a good staff and destroy it, causing the best employees to flee and the remainder to lose all motivation. In addition, this current manager didn't even have the nerve to tell the veteran herself, she knew that the veteran would be in at her usual time and instead of waiting for a day when she was going to be work, she ORDERED her staff to tell the veteran that they could no longer serve her and that she needed to leave the property. If they refused to pass on the message, they would be fired for serving the Veteran. It's so sad what has happened to this once beloved coffee cafe. BTW, this Veteran has been such a loyal customer that she has earned over 125 free drinks, which she still has on her account but can't use because they won't serve her. Refund her money for the drinks earned or you're nothing but a bunch of thieves. read more

Small, cozy spot with ample parking, good coffee and light good options. We've driven by many times but today was our first stop in. I had an espresso drink, my companion had drip. Batista was friendly, drinks were good and the environment was cozy. Very PNW feel with the exposed stone work fireplace. It's small but a nice spot. read more

The WiFire Coffee Bar, it's our afternoon treat to stop what we're doing and head over for a cup a Joe at the WiFire. The barista's there are so warm and friendly, they're quick with the orders and always have a welcoming smile on the faces. I will never give my business to the wifire again, the two girls working were much more interested in their own conversation than helping any of the customers. After ordering a few drinks one was ready almost right away. The others were iced teas ( I ordered two) took at least ten minutes and I only received one. After mentioning that a tea was missing they offered me to pay for another one. I said forget it. It was silly to wait ten minutes for one let alone wait and pay for one that was already paid for. I'd much rather go to the Southern Cross Espresso stand down the street. read more

Huh. Hard to figure out where the wheels came off the bus for "Tara S.", because my experience at WiFire has never been less than excellent, and the same goes for friends and family that have been there. I'm there pretty much every day for at least an hour or two, working on my e-mail and such while I enjoy a cup or three of coffee. It's a nice, relaxing atmosphere, with just the right amount of hustle and bustle to satisfy my need for some "white noise" while I'm working. The facilities are beautiful, nicer than pretty much any chain coffee shop I've ever been in. While they sell multiple blends of coffee in bags, all from nearby Mukilteo Coffee Roasters, there's only one brewed and ready to go. No matter - they're all good. Food is tasty, though the sauces & dressings can get a bit messy while you're eating. (Don't hold your sandwich near your keyboard! And no, that's not from experience.) One distinctive aspect is that in addition to wireless, there are also two wired internet ports available. So if you really want some wicked fast access, perhaps to upload/download a large file, it's there for you - just make sure you have your own CAT-5 cable to plug in. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the staff and customers are always friendly. People you run into are always willing to chat - it's part of the Whidbey Island charm. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a spot to sit and chill for a while. read more

Much of Whidbey has a quaint feel, but this coffee bar is located in one of the area's new building's ground floor areas. The coffee shop succeeds because it delivers consistently good coffee, sandwiches, and goodies. As well, rice and almond milk are available for coffee drinks - not usually the case in small coffee bars. Barista's provide upbeat, efficient, and friendly service. Their location cannot be beat for convenience - it's perfect for work or friend tete-a-tete's. I've lobbed off one star because they could use just another couple of tables, and truth be told, sitting at one of two tables in the doorway area is a bit bizarre (with motion, the doors open and close as you sip your coffee - although maybe this will be a fun occurrence for someone out there). All in all, you can reliably stake your claim to good java at Wifire. read more

This spot might have ruined me for all other coffee. Visited the island for two days, liked this so much on day one that we went back on day two. Flavors were amazing. Savory and sweet breakfast options were also both good, I was very sad to not find more cookies available on Sunday. Closest thing to a Starbucks on south whidbey island. In fact you may think the decor and menu were modeled specifically after Starbucks. I prefer a more local authentic place, this is part of a business building as well....so you also can feel like you are in a corporate office lobby. This was kind of our go-to place for a nice lunch, coffee & WiFi. Lately the service has been lacking. Today, for example, no more drip coffee refills unless you stand in line at the counter. Person taking our order tried to wait on us as she completed a coffee order. Clearly she was over her head as she screwed up both orders. I got the potato soup special. The soup was barely warm, the potatoes were undercooked. I went back to the counter to get an additional napkin, didn't see any so ask & was told in a very annoyed tone, "they're around the corner"! I quite like this place. I do a bit of biking on Whidbey and often stop here for some nourishment. The servers are all very nice and the food and coffee are good. Lots of potential, pretty decent food and coffee, but unbelievably rude service from the tattooed barista. I live in Portland, where haughty cooler-than-thou service is de rigueur, but this girl's bad attitude was surprising even to me. She obviously hates her job, and frankly, I've been there. Working with the public in food service can really suck. But, it's really not okay to take it out on unsuspecting customers. Sure, there aren't a ton of options in Freeland, but I'd drink crappy coffee delivered with kindness over this kind of abuse any day of the week. Customer service will make or break your business, owners! (The two other baristas seemed nice, but overpowered by the grumpy one.) read more

I hate to admit that I'm here so often that my "usual" drink is made by the time I get up to the counter! On the other hand, that's not exactly a negative! This place is my go-to coffee place on the island. There are plenty of other options - but this is the coziest and friendliest and has great blended drinks and tasty food choices and ample seating/chairs/tables/counter space! The fireplace seating is warm and inviting on mizzly days and the outdoor seating by the water feature overlooking the (parking lot) gardens is equally wonderful. (The well-tended gardens and lilies are not to be missed in the summer!) The baristas are exceptionally friendly and yes, the line is slow at times - but they are busy and on task and making sure they give full attention to the food/drink orders while offering friendly and helpful customer service and conversation. A great place to catch up w/friends or a work change of place or for a meeting or quick bite out. No other place in town offers you all that this place does ... and free wifi, too!
