Chester's Chicken - Only $5 for the 2pc box and a biscuit. Dark meat only, but that's my preference anyways so... score!

They usually cook the chicken to order to keep it super fresh, but the big Fishing Derby is in the Kern River Valley this weekend so they had some prepared in anticipation of the crowds. I wasn't mad! The food in the case was nicely displayed, the counters were clean. Pretty decent setup for "gas station" food! The chicken is nice and crunchy, and the thighs in the 2pc for $5 box were so moist and flavorful! Reminds me of a he Southern Fried chicken I grew up on (not the Colonel's.. this wasn't squishy). The biscuit they include in the box is tasty, too. The usual guy behind the counter was out to lunch and we were helped by a lady from the gas station side who was filling in and she forgot the butter and honey, but not a big deal. The biscuits were good "as-is". You can also get fried pies for dessert! They're actually fried, and they're shaped like empanadas. Normally $1.49, only $1 each with purchase - you can't beat the deal. The Apple was so good, plenty of cinnamon and just the right amount of sugar. The Strawberry had cream cheese in it and hubby says the strawberry filling reminds him of his Mom's homemade preserves. Delicious! I've heard the potato wedges are also good but we were already full from the "snack boxes". Maybe next time! I also want to try their gizzards. I haven't seen those anywhere since I was a kid! If you're in the area and looking for a tasty meal and a great deal, try Chester's Chicken!

It was so disappointing. I don't eat much fried/fast food anymore but this was pretty bad. We don't have a lot of great food in our rural area. A few decent places but not great. I definitely would not eat at this place. But if you still eat garbage like McDonald's you might think this is good.

McNally's Outpost is a great place to grab a burger after a long day of fishing! The burgers and…read morefries are excellent, and while I haven't explored much of the menu yet, the shakes and just about everything else sound delicious. It's a small, casual spot with a nice outdoor seating area overlooking the main road through Kernville. A great place to kick back, enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere, and watch the world go by. It's a little pricey, and don't expect fast food, but that's part of the appeal. Good food takes time, and it's absolutely worth the wait. One of my favorite stops when I'm in the area!

It was a younger looking girl at the register who didn't seem alarmed by the immediate rush of people who added to the already semi-long line. A couple times she shouted that she was "sorry for the wait" and that there was "only two of them". I immediately thought "oh no". Our group arrived before breakfast cutoff time but since we were in line so long it was well past the cutoff by the time we could order breakfast. Some were bummed but found alternatives. I went with a bacon burger and onion rings. Both were very good with the onion rings were excellent. The shakes looked good but I wasn't adventurous enough to try some before our long drive home. The place was clean, even the bathroom. I was very impressed with the work ethic of the two employees. Kudos to the owner or hiring manager.
