I stopped here to get a bit of lunch to takeaway. I got the vegan Mezze Cake - a savory wedge of layered hummus, rice, falafel, and pickled veggies (think aubergines, courgettes, artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, tapenade, etc.) on top of pita. I think the slice could have been slightly bigger; but overall it was flavorful, had so many interesting textures, and was such a great thing to eat on a warm day! Also, the vegan tiffin is quite nice, rich and chocolatey with dried fruit.
Unfortunately, the service here was incredibly brusque and impatient. I walked in and started to approach the deli case in the back, and the person working yelled as she approached me, "What do you want?!" (No greeting other than that.) I asked if they were open (it was around 10:30 or 11am, and there wasn't anyone else in the cafe). She was so aggressive with putting my food in containers, and then when a couple walked in behind me she yelled at them, "STOP RIGHT THERE. YOU NEED TO WAIT." They looked confused and ended up leaving as she rang me up. Maybe it was an off day; maybe someone was supposed to be helping her and they called out; maybe she was slammed with orders. But... I see on other review sites that folks have had a similar experience here. Maybe the Abbey Deli location is different? read more
