Good food for the price, only a few beers on tap - but a couple of good ones. Friendly service.

Oakland Tavern - Old School Fun Since the late 1800s…read more Stopped into the Oakland Tavern in Oakland, OR, and wow - what a blast! I think our bartender's name was Alicia (if so, she was fantastic - if not, whoever it was deserves a medal). Friendly, quick, and made the whole place feel like home. It's got some 49ers vibes going on, so you've been warned (or welcomed, depending on your team colors). This is an old-school bar - started in the late 1800s - but it's packed with life. Lots of colorful, interesting locals, and just an all-around great group of people to share a drink with. Didn't try the food, so no comment there - but the atmosphere alone was worth the stop. The kind of place you wish you could come back to every weekend. If you're anywhere near Oakland, OR, and in the mood for history, laughs, and a cold drink, this is your spot.

Ordered mine hot and it came out toasty but the veggies weren't hot which I appreciated so much! Warm sammy and crisp veggies! The only lady working had a full bar but still seemed very attentive to both regulars and bypassers at the bar and in booths! Good job girl! I also appreciated a classic dive bar feel but the Oakland Tavern was clean and welcoming with a diverse age range of people from 21-75!

One of the Bartenders, Jennifer is a real sweet gal and she works hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. I wasn't planning to eat but the feller sitting next to me ordered a good looking burger, but I was feeling chicken so I tried the blackened chicken sandwich and by golly it was sure fantastic. The tater tots are seasoned up real well and the chicken was full of flavor, layered with bacon. The bar itself is clean, well organized, with plenty of space. The stage hosted a man with a guitar that evening and he put on quite a show. Dart board upstairs is a fine addition . This is a smaller town watering hole done right. A great place to wind down after a long work week.

It's a legit meet up with friends, take a date venue. The menu and specials are always a thought out treat. I'm an early diner therefore, I haven't stayed long enough to listen to any of the live music. 5 stars

The place is lively and fun, but not rowdy (at least not when we were there). It has a nice relaxed and casual vibe. They have several pool tables, pinball, electronic darts, and slots. The food is the usual bar food - burgers, fish & chips, corn dogs, etc and it was pretty good. Now the bar.. it reminds me of the bars I grew up in back in Buffalo, it's just a small town watering hole and it might not be much to look at on the outside.. but it's on the inside where the magic happens. There's Oregon lottery machines, pool tables, dart boards and shuffleboard. The drinks are cheap and cold, the hospitality is heart warming and the food is delicious. Sean, the owner, greeted us and showed us where we could park. We had a couple of ice cold beers and a couple of great sandwiches, patty melt (pictured) and s grilled cheese. Thank you Sean for your hospitality and we hope to see you again.

The outside and even the front entry give the vibe of a "hole in the wall" so we were prepared to simply fill our stomachs, especially since we arrived "after the grill was closed" which in this case simply meant that the head cook had left. But a very, very pleasant hostess assured us everything on the menu was still up for grabs. We sat down in the front cafe, which has that feeling of a place that's been around since the 1970's and only occasionally renovated. Given my fifty years of restaurant experience, I was still in the mindset of being content just to have something to eat, so long as it was edible. My wife and I both were blown away. I forget what she had but it was "the best one she had ever had", and my barbeque sandwich was absolutely delicious. The crinkle-cut fries were hot, just crispy enough. Our expectations were exceeded by a mile, and it wiped away any preconceived notions I may have had by looking at the restaurant's physical presence. Our hostess, name forgotten but I hope she remembers being on duty on Wednesday the 13th and making our night, was always smiling, always gracious; and despite her having to attend to the back of the restaurant where the bar was located, she never left us hanging. The icing on the cake was the price! A comparable BBQ-and-fries anywhere in my hometown of Redmond, OR, is easily 17 bucks these days. My meal at The Grove was $12.99, a solid four dollars less expensive and yet still superb, everything I like in a BBQ sandwich and fries. Obviously I cannot speak to the daytime staff, or the barroom experience, but my wife and I left extremely happy and satisfied, and if we ever pass through Cottage Grove again, The Grove will be our first choice for grabbing a meal.

You want an excellent, tender, as good as any bullshit upscale restaurant rib eye? You are going to get that on Friday night steak night. You want a thick, flavorful, real beef burger? They've got you covered. Some of the best burgers in southern Oregon, by the way. They also have a very fine steelhead sandwich, tender and moist. You want an okay salad, basic weekend breakfast? Check. Strong, basic drinks? Check. You want skilled wait staff that work their asses off but still get you and your pals taken care of? Double check. I moved out along the River one year ago and discovered the Narrows shortly after. While I may be one if those progressive, feminist, environmentalist, mask wearing transplant types, I knew I had arrived when Jenna, Cris, and the gang began greeting me by name when I walked through the door and also remembering my orders. Yep. If you can get past yourself long enough to chat with the locals you learn some interesting things, make some colorful friends, hear some memorable stories. Like the time a guy showed up to rob the joint, pulled his handgun out of his pocket, demanded cash, and instead found himself facing a formidable crowd, every one of whom had pulled their own guns on him to protect their beloved bartender. 911 was called. Everyone ordered another round. The night went on. Yep. You're at the historical Narrows along the North Umpqua River. Behave yourself and have a good time. Pool tables, outdoor heated seating, plenty of those frisking annoying video poker machines and sports televisions if you're that type.

I called ahead to make sure they were open and they said they'd be open till 3pm for breakfast and brunch. We arrived @ 11am and were hungry for breakfast. This is a small town known for being a timber community, so we weren't expecting anything fancy, just a good traditional American breakfast. The restaurant itself seemed old and tired. The grime stuck on our table top had been there for a while, you could tell it hadn't been properly cleaned for at least a couple days, at least. (While writing this review, after the fact: I should have noticed the Health Score, listed on their Yelp page. You'd think they would actually deep clean, sanitize, and thoroughly go through their inventory after getting detailed feedback like that...) We were patient, not in a rush at all, just in need of some good food. The laminated menus were sticky. Our coffee was weak. I ordered a veggie skillet with sourdough toast. Our waitress asked how I'd like my eggs, which surprised me, so I said over-medium. I received scrambled eggs with lots of cheese and a scarce supply of veggies over potatoes, with a side of plain white toast. I was also served spoiled blackberry jam. I was told the Brother's Skillet was 'better than Denny's' so that doesn't say much... Ugh... overall it made me feel grossed out, sad, and disappointed.
