First time here. It's hard to describe this place because there is sooo much different stuff and cool Knick knacks! There's mostly outdoors clothing/gear, traveling necessities, but there's also books and a whole kids section with toys, books and more! I could spend hours here! Whole Earth is one of the most underrated stores for outdoors that I've ever visited. The beauty of their selection is the breadth of products over a huge price range. You'll find everything from high dollar top tier items down to budget choices that are great starters or for families that just need something easy. They always have a great balance of backpacking, hiking, and general outdoor gear that is top quality at any price. I'm the far back you'll find dozens of day pack or mountaineering backpack options next to dozens of sleeping bags. The amount of accessories they keep in stock is amazing because you'll rarely see these products in stores. Being able to interact with so many products is a huge benefit, especially with such knowledgeable staff. The shoe and clothing selection is as good as any for travel clothing options, and kids will love their dedicated section. My only complaint is that there are no membership rewards beyond an email service! It's truly a fantastic store. read more

I'm kind of shocked by some of these reviews because we had the opposite experience. They had a line outside with SHADED coverage. I actually appreciate the fact that they are limiting the number of people who are inside at a time to protect themselves and the customers. They do check your temperature when you come in, I don't feel like this is a hinderance, and standing outside with a mask on didn't rise my temperature or anyone else's so everyone was able to come in. They also ask that you use hand sanitizer before entering. This is probably one of the coolest stores you can go to. They have a lot of gag gift type items but also lots of outdoor/ hiking gear. Every staff member we came across was friendly and excited to help. The store even has a bunch of cool local Texas cookbooks including a large vegan cookbook section. If you have kids, they also have some unique kids toys/ educational activities for them. I highly suggest if you're in the area to stop by. At least you know you'll have a safe, stress free shopping experience. read more

If they sold any of the highways in or around NYC, it'd be Hole Earth. Pretty interesting store that reminds me a lot of Urban Outfitters but is actually cheaper. It's also considerably more local, because I think they're from Austin and there's not too many locations. If you like outdoorsy type wear and cool trendy stuff for all kinds of age groups, you'll definitely like the store. Bae and I liked it and the employees are really nice, but it definitely doesn't have the kinds of sexy things that she and I wear. This location is pretty big. It's clean and welcoming. They have extremely helpful shoe employees!! Very knowledgeable staff when it comes to footwear. Most of the staff has experience hiking, running, climbing, etc., so that experience transfers over to their day-to-day job and customer service! I was able to grab some walking shoes here with a good pair of insoles for support. This store has a ton of things ranging from outdoor gear, clothes, shoes, toys, games, wind chimes (that I will eventually buy!!!), etc.! It's a really fun store with lots of options!! Overall, I recommend this store if you're looking for gear similar to what REI sells, but with different brand selections and a more experienced staff. :) read more

Yes, this store has the most unique everything, and it is my favorite store. But I mostly go here instead of ordering things online for the customer service. It was my friend's birthday and I was completely lost, ready to give up, he's so hard to shop for. Ellis, Chris, and Sam came out of the woodwork, learned everything about my friend, and scoured the store until we found the perfect gift I'm so excited to give him, all while staying in my price range. I knew this place would make you wear masks, but to the extent they're doing so is ridiculous. The employee working told my husband "You and your wife need to cover up your mouth and nose while shopping here". If you're high risk and unvaccinated you shouldn't be out shopping at Whole Earth, considering it isn't an essential business. If this were a real pandemic, half the people we know would be dead, we wouldn't be out doing everything we did (shopping for fun) prior to the pandemic. Believing a face suffocator (mask) is keeping you from getting a virus with a 99% survival rate is asinine. They have a decent range of really pretty good outdoor equipment. Is is less family targeted gear than technical type outdoor gear. The bags are high end and ultra light as are the tents and other gear. Fair sized assortment of clothing. Unless you are assaulting K2, you can find most of what you need for adventures outdoors. read more

Even though the grocery store, convenience stores and work places are more packed, this is the only place we've visited that is still limiting the number of customers even if you are wearing a mask. They were only allowing 4-5 in at a time in this large store. They had the audacity to take temperatures after everyone waited in a long line out in the hot sun. They had no shade or water for anyone. They obviously only care about themselves and not the customer so we will be happy to take our money elsewhere to avoid this pathetic excuse for a store for all future purchases. read more

That guy is so knowledgeable on Hoka brand and talks about the differences between their models. He might compare other equivalent brands to help you make a good decision base on your likes. Having moved here from Austin I've been familiar with Whole Earth Provisions for a while now. Though they have a lot of interesting items and nice clothing I come here primarily for footwear. On my last two visits I was helped by a gentleman named Mike. Mike has been with the company for 16 years. That explains his knowledge. Unlike other shoe store personnel he obviously has a passion for what he does and it shows. I have issues with my feet so it's hard to find the proper fitting with the proper shoe but both times in which I had visited he steered me in the right direction which resulted in some comfort and relief from my ailments. I think that I have probably learned more from him than actual foot doctors. It's always an educational experience when he takes care of me and I come away knowing more than I had previously. Whole Earth is very fortunate to have someone like him on their team. Thanks Mike! I should mention that all the employees here are upbeat and attentive which is a breath of fresh air. I made a joke while I was in there, but I didn't think my wife would have agreed with me so quickly. It's like REI, but more affordable. They have Exoficcio, Kuhl, OR, Mountain Hardware, and their sizes go all the way to real big guy sizes. Additionally, besides clothes, they have shoes, camping gear, kids stuff, presents, glasses, I could have spent another hour or two in there. Here's a bright idea, put in a bar, then you can have a drink while you shop, I would have spent more money that way. There is everything from Life is Good infant onesies and squirrel underpants to The North Face jackets and Celestron telescopes. I love this store and has very comfortable and good quality sandals. However the sales people at the shoe area are absolutely awful. Rude and stands far from other customers. I waited for a sales person and I walked up near the curtain where the sales people go in, but no one came out. After five minutes I turned around and saw a sales person staring at me with a smirk. Rude. I went up to her and said could I please get a size nine when she came back she dropped it in my hands and left. I had to get another sales person to help fit them in (chacos). This is one of those stores that has something for everybody. As my son and I pushed our way through the door, I went one way and he, another. I had to stop myself to get him back to my side. It is hard to not want to look at Whole Earth's collection of shoes, clothes, toys, and games. We got out of there without buying anything but that is only because my friend showed up and wanted to go for ice cream. To me, it was sort of like an REI-meets-Urban Outfitters with a dash of a cool local bookstore thrown into the mix. I was able to get multiple pairs of my favorite Injinji running socks in sand and grey which I have never been able to find before, even online! My b/f got a really cool fedora to keep his noodle warm during the harsh New York winters and in general, we had a blast just hanging out and looking at all the cool shoes, outdoor gear, books and toys. Highly disrespectful staff. I was at the Westgate store when two staff members an elder skinny guy and a 20 something guy with strawberry blonde hair-- were rude and talked down to me. I had my mask on, the tip of my nose showed because I found it hard to breathe- the AC was so low that I was sweating inside the mask. He demanded I cover my nose, and I explained what was going on, also pointing out the plexiglass between him and me and the more 4 ft distance. I left over $300 at the register when I said I'm leaving, the younger guy said "just leave" No wonder they are in clearance. Won't return. read more

I've always loved Whole Earth. Whenever it's time for me to replace my North Face fleece, I think they have the best selection. Whenever I need to find a gift for my toddler niece and nephew, they've got some really cool toy or game that is way better than anything you'll find at Toys-R-Bust. Recently, I bought my bf a fleece and it was too small. We brought it back to the store where they didn't have a bigger size, but ordered it from another store and had it shipped, no cost to us. They called me when it arrived and I was in and out in a jif. Their customer service along with their selection just makes shopping here a pleasure. read more

At least that's what it looks like on our receipt. I asked about military discount (as I always do in this military friendly town). After confirmation that they do offer military discount, I walked away to peruse some books while the clerk rang up our purchases & my husband paid. I didn't notice that only 1 item (which was on sale) was discounted until we got home and I took a gander at the receipt. "Why wasn't the whole bill discounted?", I asked my husband. I love this place, it's my go-to place for all my travel needs. Whether I'm traveling for sightseeing or more rigorous hiking, biking and kayaking, this place delivers big on supplies, clothing, backpacks, etc. Don't know what to get, just ask any of their knowledgeable staff who always seem ready to help. I still have outdoor trail shoes, backpacks and gear from over 15 years ago that I bought here. They only carry top-of-the-line items that are built to last. Our closets are also filled with many of the comfortable travel-friendly clothes, many that you won't find anywhere else. Additionally, they carry all of the name brand items that other big box stores carry. We even shop for our grandkids here since they have very unique educational toys that are more engaging than most board games. The store here seems a bit smaller than their Austin location, but they can get you anything in just a couple of days. This place rocks. read more

When husband was deployed, I loved going in here and buying little knicknacks to sneak into his care packages. If you are familiar with urban outfitters and world market little knicknacks, it's sort of like that. They also carry outdoor gear and clothes that would make a nube granola crowd drool. But i was raised in the pacific northwest.... so i tend to pass over that section. Since I am not what you'd classify as an "outdoorsy" person, you'd think that going to a store that specializes in camping equipment would not appeal to me. But, the tents and backpacks are in the rear of the store, and there is so much more to explore. Unusual (and sometimes kitschy) books, toys, and household decor are over-flowing from the front corner. Cute clothes for working out or just lounging occupy the other front corner. But the best part of all is the shoes. Loads of styles from brands like Merrell, Keen, Clarks, and Toms. Patient staff willing to run to the back to bring out multiple sizes. For everyday comfortable shoes, this place is the best. Unfortunately, they don't always stock our sizes, so sometimes it is just a place to browse first before buying elsewhere. But it is always a happy day to be able to bring home a new pair of comfy shoes with a few extra goodies. read more

Love this place to get outfitted for a trip! They've got the coolest, most up to date camping equipment, from the experienced trekker to the most novice hiker. They carry really legit equipment, for stuff that's suitable for the most extreme conditions. I love their books section, where they keep some really cool coffee table book, and stuff on strange knowledge that everybody needs to know. They've got a wide selection of shoes, especially if you're into Tom's Shoes or Birkenstocks. They have a pretty cool toy section, with lots of educational stuff to play with. The service is always helpful at the register. I've never really tried to flag down a clerk, but you can see them wandering around. The store has always been clean, and the lighting good. I really love how they've incorporated the architectural elements of the old Quarry cement factory into the front of the store! Whole Earth = A Whole Lotta Fun! This is probably one of my favorite stores of all time, and every time I make my way to San Antonio I make a stop at Whole Earth in the Quarry Market. The store is very recognizable with its three smoke stacks that are integrated into the architecture of the building. This is an excellent use of integration in design. Use an existing structure in the architecture which not only looks really cool, but also incorporates the feel of the history of the area. Whole Earth features brands such as Patagonia, Prana, The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Mission Playground, Keen, Chaco, and Timbuk2, just to name a few. They also have a fantastic travel section complete with books, travel wear, and luggage. Perhaps the coolest part of the store for me is their section that features everything from hammocks and wind chimes, to sticker books and wind up toys, as well as kids and baby wear. I come here just to have a good time, not just to shop. If you're into the outdoors scene or are just an urban explorer with granola girl/boy sensibilities, you will love Whole Earth.
