Whitmore Pool is a true gem in many different ways:
1.) There are few places on earth that are as scenic as the High Sierra and Whitmore provides a spectacular view.
2.) This is a public pool in a rather under-served (in terms of pool access) area.
3.) The pool fee is trivial and I can't imagine why anyone would complain about getting 2.5 hours of swimming and water play for less than half the price of a movie. Swimming at Snowcreek AC is way more expensive (and the pool is short and a pit) and the pool in Bishop costs about the same. I've always found this pool to be clean!
4.) Whitmore has a relaxed environment. Kids are allowed to be kids and actually play. It's not a pool built on 'don't do this, don't do that,' with a whistle blow or yell from the lifeguard every 15 seconds.
It's okay to have a ball, some water toys, etc. and actually use them. Kids should have more of these opportunities in our litigious society.
5.) The pool hours extend beyond recreational swim, there are also public lap swim and tri team hours. It's worthwhile to get the full schedule.
Speaking of tri team, Whitmore pool is an excellent place to do bricks:
swim (pool)/bike Benton Crossing Road, swim (pool)/run (various trails out toward Crowley Lake or head North toward the tubs), or do your own full tri.
So, visit Whitmore Pool and relax, there's a nice shaded area for those who like to stay a bit more out of the sun. I look forward to this key attraction each time I visit the Eastside in the summer. read more
