Horseshoe Lake

This is one of the many lakes just out of the town in Mammoth Lakes. It is the furthest by car. I am going to write a short review however about Lakes Badin Path which ends or starts just near here and includes this lake. There are about 4 lakes which are included in this hike or drive. This is a great paved trail to run or bike along to see a few of the main lakes just out of the town. The basin trail basically goes from Horseshoe Lake, then past Lake Mamie, then all the way down towards Twin Lakes. It is about 4 miles and fairly steep at points, but so worth it. Best time to visit is during the fall or early winter before the snow is too much to pass. Highly recommend this path and all the vistas and views.

@RenoTahoe, I promise I'm not cheating on you. #HomeMeansNevada, which means you hold the most important place in my heart, but dammit if Mammoth Lakes seriously made me think twice this weekend! Here are the facts: FACT - Horseshoe Lake is a VERY short drive from the center of town. FACT - If the road is open, you can just about drive up to the shore line. FACT - This just may be the poster child for Alpine Lakes FACT - There's a potty on site, which is open when the roads are open. FACT - Apparently snow melt can create dangerous CO2 concentrations, and that's why the road was closed during our visit. FACT - If the mountains surrounding have snow on em, the water is probably cold. FACT - Dogs don't seem to care how cold the water is though. FACT - The road this lake is off of leads to other lakes, and you can walk or hike your way there! Seriously though, this was my first site this weekend in Mammoth, and it stole the show. Quiet, magnificent, beautiful, and just what I needed to kickstart a great Fourth Of July Weekend with some exceptional friends. If you're in the area I highly suggest a drive up this direction to explore. Horsehoe Lake taught me where Mammoth Lakes gets its name and opened my eyes to the incredible beauty of this region of our country!

Great hike but a little tough with the kiddos. It was an "easy" hike on All Trails, and maybe it would have been if we didn't have 8 kids with us! We had to go through a lot of narrow bushes, climb over some wet areas, some even still had snow/ice. I think it was supposed to be 1.6 miles round trip but felt more like 3 miles. Had some great views, but there were a ton of bugs! I got at least 4 bites!

All lakes in Mammoth are awe inspiring. The Horseshoe lake is no exception. The snow clad mountains and the crystal clear waters will bring nothing but a sense of serenity to you when you visit this place. Also, can fish and kayak here. Love it!

Beautiful little hike where you can follow the trail around the lake easily or also go off trail some to get closer to the water. We went on Nov 1. Found some melting ice and a few streams. Easy walk around overall and then went to lake McCleod which was well worth the short hike up to see. Definitely do both if you can. Total for both was approximately 4 miles.

This is a really fun lake to go and hang out. Dogs absolutely love this place. I am not so sure about all of these danger signs posted around the lake. It kind of seems weird to me that the Mammoth Fire Department would host their 25th anniversary Canoe Races and BBQ here if it was so dangerous. That is what they did today and there were people and dogs swimming in the water and laying on the beach. People were having picnics and the Fire Department was cooking up a huge BBQ. It is nice to take the trolley up here with bikes and ride the trail system back down to the village.

Very interesting place to visit, even though its a sight you shouldn't be walking around with pets or and small children.

Best disk golf experience i've had in years. Amazing staff and amazing course! 18 holes in the front, 18 holes in the back for Westcourse. Lovely pulled pork sandwiches for lunch and some golf carts to help speed up the play! 100% fun all day!

Came here accidentally trying to find the Mammoth Adventure Center (long story). Dogs are allowed to wade in the water here, according to signage. Also saw some people practicing paddle boarding. Maybe I came at a good time, but the lake actually looked quite nice. It didn't seem as muddy and dark as some of the other pictures make it out to be (Although I'm sure it's probably smaller than it once was, considering the walk to the lake from the parking lot). The water however was crystal clear, you could see straight through the bottom. It's also extremely shallow due to drought, I'm pretty sure you could walk all the way across and only go maybe knee deep.

Water levels are back up at Horseshoe, following 2017's great break in the drought.

The 2017 snowpack refilled the lake and Horseshoe Lake is beautiful again! Other Yelpers are right - the carbon dioxide is a concern, as evidenced by the grove of dead trees on the lake's edge, so come on a day with a breeze and take in one of Mammoth's real treasures.

Amazingly beautiful views, soothes the soul..nice trails, they had people kayaking, horseback riding, walking the trails, bicycling..would definately return!!

Review Highlights - Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake has promise of being less depressing after a few good snow years help raise the water level.

Really easy to get to, no mosquitos, and not crowded at all. An older gentleman there who I think…read morewas an off duty park Ranger or something told us all about the fault, cases of people falling in, and what to look out for, etc. He said it's more impressive looking from the other side of the main road (going from Mammoth Lakes to Mammoth Mountain), though we couldn't find any signs or trailheads for this part afterwards. Nonetheless this is a pretty neat, quick stop with no hike required to get to it.

I recently stopped by this earthquake fault to check it out while in the Mammoth area. It was easy…read moreto find, and parking was easy. Based on the photos, I was expecting this to be more like a cliff with a tall crack in it. In reality, it's more like a very long ditch. If you're into geology, or if you're super impressed by thinking about the earth splitting open, then maybe you should check this out. Personally, I wasn't very moved by this experience. If you didn't know that this was an earthquake fault, then there would be nothing impressive about it. It's just a very long gorge that is kind of deep in some places. I'm not sure if rappelling into the fault is allowed, but I thought it would be interesting to get a closer up view of some of the rocks and pools on the bottom. Honestly not really worth driving out of your way to see this unless you happen to be a geology fanatic, or are just dead set on seeing every possible sight near Mammoth.
