Whitlow Concrete exceeded our expectations! We wanted to pave our side yard and widen our driveway to fit a second car. We liked our landscaping and wanted it to be moved over. We got in touch with Dillon and explained. He understood, asked some questions, made some recommendations, and came back to us with a detailed quote. We were surprised with the price, it was reasonable and under what we expected to pay. He sent over a contract which included the estimated time to complete the work. 10-12 working days. Eric was assigned as our project manager for the project, and Jaime was the lead foreman. They were phenomenal as was the entire crew that did the work. They cleaned up at the end of every day, and made sure we had a safe way to enter/exit our home. They were friendly and kept us in the loop the whole time. During their work, we decided that we wanted to replace the front yard fence, and after letting them know, they completely replaced the fence the next day. They did all the work with the city to get the necessary approvals for the curb work, as well as handled all the work with the utility companies to make sure their work didn't damage anything underground. The result is great, and we love how it turned out. It's better than what we wanted, and they managed to do it all within the original quoted time AND at the original quoted price (excluding the change order for the fence replacement). read more

It's actually quite simple... if you want the job done well, correctly and completely, hire Whitlow Concrete. "Seamless" doesn't begin to describe the experiences I've had with this company. Most recently, I had a to have sidewalk and street repair done due to a massive tree route system's damage. Dillon made a challenging situation easy. They managed permits with the city, throughly explained all the options, provided quality work, responded quickly, calendared the work asap, communicated consistently and even accommodated other tradespeople on site to get the job done. I've always found their rates competitve and fair. In home or property remodels there are few aspects that you can just hire a professional and consider it done. With Whitlow everything is just taken care of. Can not recommend more highly. read more

"City Standards" were clearly not met based on photographs, in lieu of a required inspection, submitted by Whitlow Concrete to SC Public Works over two weeks a-f-t-e-r the concrete was poured... both entities tout a good working relationship with each other... but the customer, not so much. Whitlow did work on my neighbors driveway while our roof was being replaced. Whitlow employees not only were seen rummaging through our roofers supplies in front of our house. They left a pile of mud and sand in our gutter and an oily mess in front from their vehicles that parked in front of our house. When I notified our neighbor she stated she also witnessed the rummaging of supplies. She notified Dillion at Whitlow who suggested I call him. What lack of concern and responsibility !!! It's been a tough year for us all. I would avoid dealing with Whitlow at all costs. My job has been pushed out for weeks and ended up having the owner, Dillon Whitlow lose his s&*$ when I asked once again of a start date for my project. They are clearly are in over their heads and have more work than they can handle. Our original driveway was built in 1979 and was an old concrete unreinforced driveway. We hired Whitlow Concrete to install a new driveway, a walkway & stairs and a retaining wall/curb. The whole project from start to finish was a great experience. Dillon came out and gave us ideas and options to choose from as to design, color & textures. This company is very professional in everything that they do, from the estimate through completion of the job. They were accurate in the starting time for the work to begin. The work was done neatly and no corners were cut. The job supervisor came around frequently and consulted with me on how I wanted certain things done. I found both Tim and Dillon easy to work with, responsive and have the willingness to make sure the project is done right. The overall integrity of all of the team made for a great experience. They have been at my house for the past six months and I have been able to get to know a lot of their workers. I was pleased to find that most of them have been with the company for 15+ years and are grateful to work there. What was really refreshing is how humble Dillon was when mistakes were made. I learned at the end of the project that with the weather issues this winter and a mistake (in our favor) on the bid, that they didn't make a profit on the job and might have even lost money. But it did happen! Not just to Linda C. but to me! Shame on you yelp.com for trying to skew ratings by deleting negative ratings! I am now downgrading my review from 3 to 2 stars. It had taken 2 months of contract negotiations, in 2016, prior to the pour to discuss many things, such as how the concrete would be scored to provide stress relief points, to avoid random cracking. Dillon Whitlow said not to worry - they would provide all appropiate scoring and we would not experince any random cracking. Now, only two years after the pour, I have numerous, random cracks in this patio, that Dillon Whitlow said would never happen. Compare this with the concrete patio at Bicycle Trip [1001 Soquel Ave.] - plenty of stress lines in concrete pour much larger than mine - with NO CRACKING! Amazing patio! Must see! I spoke with Aaron, the owner of Bicycle Trip he told me it was Barry Swenson Builders who managed their patio pour - perfect! -- My original 2016 review [unedited, though overly-optimistic, at the time] This is a company in transition from "Bully" [father] Tim Whitlow to Dillon [son] trying - and mostly succeeding, to do great. Before hiring Whitlow Concrete to pour our patio [for about $15,000 total cost], I came here, to yelp for reviews. What I found was shocking: Linda C. wrote: "He, Tim, was a bully" I couldn't believe the above, at the time, and I hired Whitlow, only to discover that it was true. Without going into too much detail, suffice it to say that I negotiated the contract with Tim's son Dillon for about two months, prior to the day of the pour. Next the crew arrived and put in forms - all seemed well, except that I didn't have the decorative stone on hand to authorize pouring concrete yet. Next day,Friday, Dillon left a voice message telling me that the pour would happen on Monday, but that I could easily cancel, if need. I furiously called and email Dillon to cancel the pour, since I didn't have the decorative stone on hand yet. No reply. Monday morning, the crew shows up, ready to pour concrete. I run out of the house, wondering why they are there. The crew has no knowledge of my email or voicemails with their boss, last Friday. Then the father, Tim Whitlow shows up on my property and starts yelling at me about "you have to stop doing this sh*t" - I guess he must have meant, stop trying to achieve a clear contract [which I had thought I had achieved, with his son.] Yelling led to insults being thrown, then Tim instructed his workers to "rip out all the forms" At which point I had to threaten to call the police, which caused Tim to back off. 30 Minutes later, Tim's son, Dillon show up at my doorstep acting as if he didn't know what had just happened. Dillon and I discussed things and got back to basics. [There is a LOT of detail I am omitting, to protect Whitlow Concrete, at this point] Finally, Dillon's team poured me a very nice patio, except with a very minor defect of below grade pooling of water, which Dillon tried to deny, but which is evident and persistent - but very minor, since water evaporates in a day or two - still, they made a mistake in grading the patio, and Dillon, like his father, failed to acknowlege or remedy. Still, all in all, most concrete companies in this area do not even call you back. Yet Dillon followed through and, despite the worst efforts of his father, Tim, to sabotage this job, followed through and gave me a great patio. I feel very bad for this company, yet hope for the best. If you are considering hiring them, insist on this: 1) Tim Whitlow will never be involved 2) The contract must be signed off, in detail, by Dillon Whitlow. Actually, Dillon Whitlow refused to sign the contract, yet he insisted that only I sign the contract. Wierd. It didn't feel right to me, yet I signed it and got a patio poured. We just had what, I think, is our 4th or 5th concrete job done by Whitlow. This time was the absolute best. Dillon came out for the estimate and we went over the job thoroughly. We both understood exactly what the project would entail. Then we changed it a little bit. No problem. I sent him some photos of the changes and he okayed them. He agreed to schedule it on our time, rather than his because we were having some tree work done at the time. Very flexible. He called up a few days prior to the agreed start date just to confirm. He and his crew showed up on time, ready to work. We went over the job again, and they went to work. The crew understood what they needed to do and went right to it efficiently. After two days of setup we were ready for the pour. A new crew showed up,right on time, as usual. The pour went great. Fantastic job! Then on the fourth day, a small crew came over and finished the job by cleaning up. I Really love the work Whitlow has done, and will use them again. read more

Everyone we dealt with at Whitlow Concrete was top notch - the owner, project supervisor, and all the workers. Communication before the job was timely and easy. And they stuck to their schedule. On the project day they put in 110% to get it done. Everything was left tidy and they came back the next day to pressure wash all the sidewalks that had gotten muddy. I will use these guys (Whitlow) again if I need any more concrete work. The concrete work looks great, and I'm picky. The project was done exactly on the schedule they gave me and it came in under budget. Everyone from the owners to every guy on the working crew was easy to work with. We had 21 feet of badly damaged and highly root lifted sidewalk replaced which crossed our driveway and had ~18 feet of our driveway approach replaced / extended. Dillon Whitlow gave a very complete, easy to understand written estimate. Dillon and his crew were enjoyable to work with in every way with easy prompt communication. The crew completed all of the work in two days. They were very experienced and neat, sweeping up continually as they went and even scrubbing by hand the adjoining concrete, keeping it clean from any new concrete spill. Although all of the crew were great, I need to give a BIG shout out to the crew lead, Eric. Eric made it all happen and he kept me informed every step of the way, making sure the end result was exactly what I wanted. Thanks Eric! Both Dillon and his dad Tim Whitlow came by every few hours each day for a few minutes at a time to ensure everything was going OK and that I was happy with the work as it was happening. Dillon seems knowledgeable and is very personable. His dad Tim is quieter, but I found him easy to talk and work with: a reasonable guy who has worked in the business a lot of years. Personally, I appreciate having a guy with many decades of experience being involved to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises. Price: I had a few quotes. Whitlow's quote was near the lowest, but the lowest quote was only two (2) sentences and so it was hard for me to tell if it was really the lowest. Dillon was very clear that his quote covered everything: all fees, all taxes, everything. Our neighbors had just used Whitlow a few months ago and were very happy with work and experience. Regarding cost, it was unclear if the city would let us extend our driveway approach into the adjoining 6 foot of dirt between the sidewalk and the street. Last minute the city allowed it and Dillon through that part in for free and replaced the last 3 feet of sidewalk for free as he said it would look much better. Then when I got the bill, it was still less than the estimate as Dillon said there was part of the work that turned out to be cheaper. Wow! read more

My old driveway had lifted due to roots underneath. So I set out to get that replaced. I used Community Tree Service for the tree removal who are great people, For the concrete I got several referrals from friends who had good jobs done by Whitlow so I called them up. I heard that Whitlow are local people who have been around Santa Cruz for a long time and are a family business. They got back to me quickly and indeed Whitlow Senior and Junior both bid and supervised the job personally, After removal of the adjacent trees, I had them remove old driveway, remove and grinding of old roots which were indeed underneath, install a root guard just in case, and put in new concrete with color and stamping and borders, etc. His bid was very reasonable and he was able to schedule the job within a week or so. Their crew showed up on the appointment date, worked fast and got all the prep done first day and poured the next. Came back a few days later and sealed and cleaned up. Overall looks great! Whitlow Concrete did a great job replacing the front walkway at my office. Tim came out and gave a very good bid. He had some good ideas of things I could do. I decided to keep it simple and just put in the concrete and a curb. We agreed on a date. It only took one day to brake apart the existing concrete and replace it with new concrete. The crew knew exactly what they were doing and obviously had done this many times before. The concrete dried quickly and we were able to use the walkway very quickly. No down business time. There was one glitch afterwards concerning an electrical wire that may have been disrupted by the work performed. I spoke with Tim and he already knew where the wire had been, he spoke with his workers and they had taken care not to disrupt it. Even with that, Tim sent out an electrician to take a look. It turned out the wire had loosed at one end, it was not effected negatively. It was fixed quickly and was not the fault of the new concrete. It was just a loose wire. They were very on top of their game. I was happy that Tim went the extra mile to send someone out to see what the problem was. Very ethical. read more

Tim was a great guy to work with. Very responsive. He and his crew did a nice job on layout details and finish. The only reason not 5 stars is that I don't think the concrete itself was as high a quality as I would have liked. The aggregate seemed pretty weak and I have had a few more cracks than I would have expected. I would use him again, but would be more specific on the concrete and maybe more rebar or use fiber reinforcement. read more

Our front porch was a nightmare: narrow landing with about a two foot drop to a wild patch of dirt and weeds. Halloween was always a mess - anytime more than 2 ninja's or princesses came trick or treating, we were nervous they'd take a spill and send Snickers flying through the air. My wife & I had wanted to change it forever to something we could actually use & enjoy (picture a sunset with a beer), and we were excited after submitting plans & having our contractor start to work. Except...our contractor farmed out the concrete work to someone else. Who did a crappy job. Then didn't show up to finish it. Forever. A friend who does high-grade commercial concrete projects recommended Whitlow Concrete to finish our patio, and I'm so glad they did (I wish we would have hired them from the start). Whitlow & team were responsive, efficient, and did a great job finishing our patio (applying the final plaster "skin"), but the main reason I was compelled to write this review was care after they completed their portion of the project. At some point, another contractor nicked the side of our planter, causing the concrete to chip. With one phone call, Whitlow was back the next day and fixed the problem. We recently used whitlow concrete at our Aptos house to replace a large backyard tile and concrete patio, side walkway and front porch with new stamped concrete. We also decided to add a built in fire pit. Tim and Dillon came to our house twice- once to prepare a quote and a second time to make sure everything on the project was clear. We set the demo date about a month ahead of time as I needed to fly in for the project. They had an entire crew and equipment at our house at 8 am on the scheduled day. They had workers there every morning until the project was complete. They worked directly with the plumbers to coordinate install of the gas lines. They were helpful in stain color selection and suggested a contrasting color to make the fire pit stand out. When some replacement first pavers didn't quite match our existing pavers they replaced them with a better match before I could even say anything. Tim was out almost every day to review the work and answer any questions. I found him very easy to work with. The patio and fire pit look exactly how we envisioned them. I would definitely use whitlow again for another project. read more

seemed like nice guys. completely fumed out my business even though they claim that they got all the toxic fumes out of the building. we had all the doors open and 4 industrial fans going and it took till 3pm to clear it out. lost customers because of that. then failed to show for the next early morning repair job. then when I told them we would need to work after the business closes, they said that I was difficult, not a nice person and to stop telling them how to run their business. so then they quit and lied to say it was my fault. then went on to say that they didn't have a contract so they weren't legally bound to the job ( I have a copy ). and still claimed that they could get the fumes out in the morning when they already proved they couldn't. they were offered more money to compensate for the change, but continued to be nasty and blamed me again for not being willing to compromise. wow! so you knew can't work during my business hours and the early morning was proven that it won't work. that only leaves evenings, so I don't know how else to compromise. the extra money offered should have made it possible! I think this guy is like a 5 year old, when things don't go exactly as he wishes, he just quits. read more
