We hired Dave Benjamin of Earth First/White Birch to do an extensive landscaping project on our property a couple of years ago after we built an addition to our home. Dave was full of promises but severely lacking on delivery. His idea of landscape design was to load a truck up with very expensive plants and order his employees to plant them wherever - not paying attention to the amount of light the plants require or whether the location was on our irrigation system. He and his employees planted very small, immature plants in the heat of a very dry summer. Some plants survived, but many did not. Although some of this could be attributed to a lack of rain, in many cases, the plants that died were right next to ones that survived so I doubt it was all due to watering. Further, we have an irrigation system, so again, I doubt it was all due to water.
In addition to the multitude of dead plants that Dave refused to replace, he made many mistakes that he refused to remedy. For starters, he planted grass seed in two large sections of our property, but included in the hay he provided was a permanent, invasive weed seed that grew out of control and was impossible to get rid of. Dave refused to fix the problem so we had to hire someone else to spray RoundUp on the affected areas and reseed - at our expense. Dave also tore out many of our beautiful, established plantings without our consent only so he could replace them with expensive plants from his nursery (many of which later died). Also, without checking with us, he decided to cut off the lowest branches of a couple of umbrella pines that were already existing on our property. Unfortunately, he cut too much off and since the branches don't regenerate, the trees looked ridiculous - almost like telephone poles. He admitted he made a mistake, but refused to replace the trees. We had to replace them ourselves at our expense. He also decided to plant an herb garden in a shaded area of our property but in order to do so ripped out beautiful, mature hydrangea and lilacs, again without our consent. He refused to replace the plants he destroyed. He also moved a beautiful, established PG hydrangea to another area on our property without our consent. It was one of my favorite trees, but unfortunately it is now dead because of the move and because its new location offered too little light. On another occasion, one of his employees burned portions of our lawn by not properly diluting the chemicals. Although he did fix the problem in the front yard, other sections of the lawn in the back were left dead and yellow.
I wish we never hired Dave Benjamin. After spending tens of thousands of dollars on Dave, our yard has never looked worse. read more
